Really? I think he's worse. Harper is a prima donna, but his team doesn't seem to think he's a dick. Didn't Mattingly bench Puig for basically being a jerk?

Harper's first night back after a lengthy trip to the DL was a week or so ago. He insisted on doing the line-up card himself and wanted to start himself in center, which would have benched their regular CF. Apparently the whole affair did not go over well for him in the locker room.

My interest in baseball has nosedived (much like my Snakes, yay, highest team payroll in 16 years ($105M) and Deeee Efffff motherfarking Elllll in the West, and probably the lowest win percentage in the bigs, period), but.......no shiat?  He actually wanted to write the card out?

I just cannot see Matt Williams letting that abide.  Didn't Sarge bench Harper earlier this year for not running out a grounder or something?  And then he -- you said "insisted" -- lets Harper do the lineup?  No way.

sort of on topic, but I was watching the Pads/Dodgers game yesterday on Fox Sports West, which is the Padres home outlet (Fark you very much Time Warner Cable and your exclusive distribution bullshiat) and I have to say, the Padres announcers (Dick Enberg and somebody else) are about the homer-iest mother farkers I have ever heard....Jesus, they were terrible.

/Puig is one that if he plays for "your" team, you love him. If he plays for somebody else, he's a massive asshole.
//farker does need to be a little less nonchalant in the outfield though, he almost blew it in the 9th on a grounder to right field that could have let the Pads at least tie the game.

KingKauff: Super Chronic: Best ejection of the weekend: Nick Punto and Bob Melvin being ejected after the game was already over.

How did that happen?

Punto had strike three called to end the game, threw his helmet on the ground and yelled an F-bomb at the ump, who gave the "you're outta here" signal. Melvin came out and he was gone too.

What's not clear to me is why did that happen. They weren't forced to sit out the next game. I read somewhere that it has to do with fines -- they can kick in automatically if a player is ejected -- but nothing really concrete on that.

i just caught Bobby last week.  the most boring Ratdog show i've ever seen.  5 song first set, desultory second set (also short).  didn't give Kimock any windows to achieve liftoff.  Cassidy and Jack Straw were good, but by and large the most "mlennnnhhhh....." show i've ever seen.  Setlist was a C-, playing was a C+.

met Bill Walton before the show (speaking of announcers!)  that was pretty farking awesome.  the highlight of the night unfortunately.

Not obscure to me; that was the reference.

But seriously, Miller said a word or two after being punched out, then walked to the dugout. The umpire, Bob Davidson, followed Miller and yelled some things at him from behind. Miller turned around without uttering a word but with a smile on his face, at which point Davidson tossed him. One of the more bizarre umpire power trips I've seen recently. (If whatever Miller said in the batter's box was bad enough to warrant an ejection, Davidson could/should have ejected him then.)

hah, getting red carded by the umpire.  "a sticky wicket for Puig, as he's been booked for dissent.  Puig is in the book, seeing yellow in the top of the 5th at the 53rd minute!  one more and he's out!  And at second, a horrorshow tackle to break up the double play, he went in spikes up, that's a straight red!  Los Angeles B.C. will be forced to play with 8!  A man down against San Francisco United!  Unlucky!"

if you didn't know, he left the Vegas show a song or two in, Jay sang the rest of the night.  San Diego was the next day, and i guess whatever he was battling in Vegas must have carried over, because he was kinda mailing it in, i hate to say.

i was very bummed at the end of the first set as "Cassidy" is winding down, Steve puts on the Cripe guitar - memorably donated to him for the 1998 Other Ones tour - and Bobby does the "we'll be back in just a little bit", and you could see Steve making the "wait....what?" face.

Vin scully is decent, certainly in the top 10; but as a Yankees fan I don't even bother with John Sterling; however any time John Flaherty, david cone, paul o'neill come on to announce I have the most enjoyment. Michael Kay is a decent announcer as well; he's a professional and doesn't act like he knows baseball, not like half the league who haven't played and pretend they have. "OMG YOU SEE THAT CALL?" - Yeah talking to you Dwayne Staats - gotta love it when someone who hasn't played baseball; sits and argues about balls and strikes.

/Vin Scully now I think about it ranks in my top 5; St Louis isn't bad, Boston isn't bad either; Angels have the most boring next to Arizona.

I think we have a pretty farking good crew (Steve Berthiuame, formerly of ESPN and Bob Brenly).  Brenly is all the time giving little tidbits you would never know and tells great stories.  he played for about a decade and managed two franchises, so he's got some great ones.

one anecdote i've told before is when the Snakes were @ Los Doyers, Brenly mentioned how Chavez Ravine was oriented in a way unlike most other open air parks.  So for day games, the catcher had to be careful how he flashed the signals, as a canny batter could see the shadow due to how the park was oriented.  Brenly is like "this is the only park in the bigs where you have to be careful on the signals, we'd always tell our younger catchers to really tuck the signals in, or block the shadow with your glove."

I just cannot see Matt Williams letting that abide. Didn't Sarge bench Harper earlier this year for not running out a grounder or something? And then he -- you said "insisted" -- lets Harper do the lineup? No way.

Here's what Harper actually said:

"I think it's great. I think [Zimmerman] should be playing left," Harper said. "Rendon's a good third baseman. He should be playing third. We've got one of the best second basemen in the league in Danny Espinosa. Of course, we want the best-hitting lineup in there. I think Rendon playing third and Zim playing left is something that would be good for this team. I think that should be what's happening."

Implying also that he should be in Center and Span would be on the bench.

I'm not sure that qualifies as "insisting on doing the lineup" but it was a dumbfark thing to do. You never question your manager in front of a mic.

2014-07-14 01:11:24 PM
On Sunday, Carlos Martinez for the Cardinals almost hit an ump in the face when he flung his bat after a groundout.

I want to be pissy about it because I hate the Cardinals, but Mike Matheny went up to him and said something in the dugout, and he apologized on his way to the mound.

Oh, ok.  i thought brotherman in the thread was saying that Harper was actually trying to do the lineup.  the quote you posted, while stupid on Harper's part, just his thoughts and not him trying to actually say who's playing.

I wonder how Sarge took that.  or the veterans.  you gotta think someone pulled him aside and settled his hash.

brenly's all the time giving neat little tidbits about the game.  it is just that the Snakes are complete shiat and not worth watching, is the problem.  We just dealt a few players within the last week.  I think LaRussa will completely clean house in the offseason.  Gibby and KT have to be gone.  I love Gibby but Gibbyball just isn't working out anymore.  KT's moves with one exception have been catastrophic fails.  it isn't all his fault -- i think this season alone we've lost 4 pitchers due to Tommy John -- but.....good god the Snakes are awful.  LaRussa has the greenlight on anything he wants per ownership so I think he's gonna chop off the head of the snake, pardon the pun, and start over.

Doh of course I watch a game which Bob Brenly didn't announce; I like those kind of announcers that can tell a story; Paul o'Neill and David Cone are great together; talking about just about anything that goes on in the club house; I'm willing to bet if He was announcing that game I'd probably tune back in again; ill have to check it out after the all star break.

I love the Yankees, but I also get the radio broadcasting for everyone else with the MLB package; so I pretty much just tune in all day listening to baseball rather then a boring ass radio that plays "Freebird" 24 times a day.

quite obviously Mark Grace was always a hoot in the booth but after his second DUI (arizona has some of the most stringent DUI laws in the US by the way) the team cut him loose.  well i should rephrase that - they kicked him off the air, but in spring training he had a quasi-coaching role.

he was always good for some stories and dropped lots of "there's some stories I'd like to tell but this is public airwaves, i might get fired for some of them" kind of hints.

The Jays had Buck Martinez, who I find to be quite solid, and Jerry Howarth together for a few televised pre-season games. Having listened to Tom Cheek and Jerry on the radio for years, I had a major nostalgia hit from that one. Sadly they went back to Pat Tabler in the color seat for the regular season. He does okay, but Jerry's just great.

As for the play, I can sort of see Puig's point - looked like the zone was pretty wide. But don't be a dick about it.

johnny_vegas: My benchmark is Harry Kalas

Sigh. The clowns in currently in the TV booth for the Phils aren't even worthy of shining the shoes on the Harry statue in the ballpark. (Not counting Schmitty, of course, on those days that he joins them.) Scott and Larry on the radio aren't in the Harry and Whitey class, obviously, but they're so much more fun to listen to.

But no one - NO ONE - is as much of blatant, horrid homer as Hawk. There's a difference between "being a fan of the team" and "pretending the opposition isn't even worthy to share the same field". Is there any other announcer in baseball that goes completely silent for 30 seconds and refuses to even acknowledge when the other team homers?

2014-07-14 02:14:59 PM
Back to the called strike out.  Puig stood there and looked at three strikes--very good pitches, was properly called out, and then biatched about it.  A better man would have packed his lumber and his sorry ass back to the dugout without a word.  The umpire didn't make too big a deal out of it.  Puig was asking for it and got it.  His Manager questioned the umpire but had no basis for a complaint.  A ball player can be forgiven for being offensively stupid once in awhile.  Do it regularly and you make a name for yourself.
