(Rocketnews 24)   Retailers in Japan-- stuck with boxes and boxes of World Cup gear after national team crashes out of opening round-- are deep-discounting to move it all out. "There also seems to be a bit of a price war on Japan soccer potato chips"   (en.rocketnews24.com) divider line 17

Send it all to the countries that got those Denver Broncos championship t-shirts sent to them last February.

Put them next to the Patriots 19-0 shirts.

Looking at those pictures of retail stores, why is it that everything in Japan always seems like a goddamned cartoon?

Well great. Even more useless crap with Pikachu on it in the deep discount bin. So basically, the World Cup turned Japan into Wal-Mart.

I dunno, I'd probably take a little Pikachu in a soccer jersey for a couple of bucks. Not for $15 US though.

Japan lied to me. I thought their players were world class based on their anime and manga!

With that logic, I wonder why I have never gotten a nosebleed when I get aroused? Also, I've gotten my ass kicked many times and I STILL can't transform into a demonic monster and say "THIS IS MY FINAL FORM".

Only one team made it out of the first round?

No, but every other nation will be stuck with boxes and boxes of world cup shiat they'd have been able to shift without discount if their team won.

mikaloyd: So where are the boxes of USMNT crap at deep discount?

Here's just one example that took two seconds to find with my very first search:

Originally US$24 in early March, discounted by 50% as of a few days ago.

fo_sho!: Its sd out on Amazon.

Bzzt. No banana.

It was in stock when I posted. It is in stock now, from four different retailers, all as "New" and all selling at a huge discount over its original price (anywhere up to 50%), with free shipping.

Goodness gracious. You found one item that sold out and is still being listed by a couple of opportunistic price gougers. I'm sure there aren't any such items in Japan. *rolls eyes*

Meanwhile, the item I found was the first search I did, the first link listed, the first link I clicked, it's still readily in stock, and its value has come down by a factor of 50%. I wonder which could be the more common outcome?

/no I don't, because it's pretty obvious to anybody with two brain cells to rub together

You really think that a scarf would sell out stateside in July? A $35 scarf? I'm guessing they sold a few but jerseys were the hot item.

The USA did experience a surge in sales because they made it out of the second round. Here are some stories about it:

Anyone with more than 2 brain cells would know that fans of teams that make it further in the world cup will buy merchandise. They will buy shirts to wear on the beach. July 4th doesn't hurt.

The Japanese team, in contrast, lost its first game, tied its second 0-0, and lost the last game 4-1. Fewer sales.

Check out the spikes on google after each game. If you play fewer games, you have more unsold merch.
