The scary thing here?  I know about as much about Japanese culture as your average gaijin, and virtually nothing about modern Japanese pop music, but...

...even I have heard of AKB48.

/several of their members have appeared on game shows

Well if it wasn't for their recent move to allow their military to operate overseas for the first time since WWII, I'd have said this was a pretty cushy job...

Fun-fact - It's also the name of a synthetic cannabinoid! Whichever chemist came up with it must have been a fan...

May I be the first to want to enhance our Japanese American relations by inviting AKB48, ALL of AKB48 by offering them the opportunity to show Fark how it is done by providing BIE to all farkers who post here.. by the way EIP ladies. 296*2 I may die before I surface again or have blisters somewhere.

Rallies similar to this are breaking out all over Japan.

WTF?

That's kind of normal by Japan's standards.

I just wonder why I've been seeing so many US Navy commercials lately.  Are they for recruiting?  I thought if anything we would be drawing down the number of Navy personnel, but I could be wrong.

So if it's not recruitment, it must be PR?

And they're all exciting action ads with feel-good voice over.

Surprised that isn't tooold.jpg for the Japanese. Most of these girl idol groups have a strict 17 and under only policy that just blows my mind that it's considered anything but arbitrary and ridiculous. Then again, the whole explicit idol system that is upfront that it is all manufactured and the actual musical talents of the girls is incidental blows my mind anyway.

I don't quite understand what going on there. She looks perfectly acceptable for a 20 year old.

From my own understanding, after living two years in Japan, janken (rock-paper-scissors) is serious business and used as the ultimate phase of the decision-making process in a wide range of situations, from who gets to ask out the hot senpai to who has to yield trade concessions at the government level. Using janken to determine who gets the prominent spot on an album cover is just par for the course.

I don't want to derail the thread's current derailment, but this article plus the earlier article about that Japanese plant reprocessing radioactive material into weapons-grade material...

You get the feeling that the US and Japan are giving the Chinese a not-so-subtle hint regarding their aggressive behavior over the last couple of years?
