DRTFA. Sarah Palin?

Sure it's stupid but it's not, like try to get close and make a life drawing of a bull stupid.

Also, you've been running in front of a bunch of rampaging bulls since the 13th century and now THIS is suddenly dangerous?

Least-aware-festival-ever.

Aaaaaand, we're done.  The headline must be referencing the police.

Pretty much.

That is just the cherry on top of what is, generally, a stupid activity.

And as stupid as running with bulls is, it's not even in the top 100 of stupid things people have done.

2014-07-13 11:44:57 PM
Not only is it stupid activity, but its just a precursor to a barbaric ritual that should have been banned a long time ago.

I used to be all caught up in the romantic notion of the corrida as an ancient tradition full of cultural relevance. Then I saw one.

Oh, BTW... if that's the greatest example that you've ever seen, you live a sheltered life

I agree. Spain's gaily colored outfits and streamers try to detract you from the fact that IT'S A BLOOD SPORT. Those bulls are to be slowly tortured to death for entertainment and the police are looking for a guy with a camera? Try the stadium. Purple guy with a funny hat and a sword. He's the one you ought arrest.

doglover: IT'S A BLOOD SPORT

Is there anyone who contests this?

Just out of curiosity I checked the Internet to see if they allow cockfighting in Spain. Unsurprisingly that is considered cruel and is illegal, but not bullfighting because tradition, which totally makes it not cruel.

Well, there IS the chance that the bull might actually kill the matador. It's not likely, because by the time that the matador gets into the ring, the bull is tired, wounded, and pretty damn near done, but the bull does have a chance. Of course, it used to be a decent chance that the horses might get gored too, but that's been reduced by the horses actually getting armored pieces to give them some protection.

It's a tradition that goes waaaaay back. Before Christianity sort of way back. Like The Epic of Gilgamesh way back. And yeah, it's got religion in its side--just not terribly Christian sort of religion. Cock fighting goes back a bit further, but it didn't have religion and Mithras on its side.

pointing out that he had put other runners in tremendous danger.

Can't have that.

If someone suicide bombed the crowd there, I'm wondering what we would call him. The winner?

This, trillion times over.

Give the bulls swords and then it'll be a fair fight.

Or a shotgun they can swallow, so when they thump their tails it shoots out their horns.

Maybe they could just use Nerf bulls instead?

When they talk about recording devices being banned, what about Google Glass? That is hands free and doesn't require you to slow down.

In an activity that epitomizes human stupidity, yes, I'd agree that this is in fact the most stupid thing you could possibly do.

"I'm already running ahead of half a ton of razor-horned snorting death. I know! I'll slow down a little so I can take a selfie AND post it on Facebook so the cops can catch me! Genius!"

How is taking a selfie during a bull run any more stupid than participating in the bull run?

Or just stop listening to the women and other inteligent groups and go full retard with the danger.

Sharpen the bulls' horns and encourage spectators to throw things at runners and try to get them gored. Let the matidor come in on a fresh bull with no injury. Pile up the skulls of everyone killed during the event into a big throne and the winningest matador sits on it with his sword in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other and reigns as El Rex de la Murte (King of Death, I can't Spanish) for the Feaste del Sangre (Feast of Blood, again can't Spanish) as the survivors devour the meat if the dead kine and toast the fallen Matadors out of goblets of gold and silver.

Or, at the very least, don't piss and moan about someone doing something dangerous in your barbaric blood orgy. Blood for the blood god or safety first. Don't try to play both angles.

Not even the dumbest thing this week, for which I would nominate the competitive eater who choked to death on stage.

2014-07-14 01:45:31 AM
So a Spanish town, known around the world for its over the top exploitation of bulls and those stupid enough to run in front of them, wants to fine someone for filming the spectacle from an unapproved angle for safety reasons?  Riiiight.  If they care about the safety of anyone involved they wouldn't run the thing in the first place.  But it makes them lots of money, so safety is something other people are supposed to maintain.

When the bullfighter is on foot? I think a bull is pretty fairly matched against a flamboyant rodeo clown with a sword.  And it is sure as hell a much fairer fight than any steer gets at a slaughterhouse.

It's mostly the torture to soften up the bull that makes the proceedings cruel and unpleasant. Knock that shiat off and it wouldn't be so bad.

But it seems to me there's little reason the whole thing couldn't be done non-lethally today, which would require a relatively minor change to tradition and have the benefit of letting the best bulls live to fight again.

I'm old, but truth be told, I'd like to tun with the bulls at least once before my life is over. But the plane trip will be hard. I'd like to take my kids to a cock-fight, but since it's illegal here, and don't feel safe in Mexico.I remember growing up, my dad took me to many cock fights. Don't feel comfortable risking the kids, as my Dad did me.
I wonder, would it still be dangerous behavior to wear some kind of head band with a Go-Pro on it? Not holding it in your hands like a douche.

Actually, I'd like to see more dog fighting. But instead of bloody, animal abuse, we'd teach them to shred on paw friendly guitars and have battles of the bands.

Well that doesn't work though. They've tried doing it nonlethally in Mexico and California but the bulls that have fought a few times learn eg. They go fark up the matador really quickly. Hemingway even said that.

Best to just dispense with the whole thing. People in Spain don't seem to lack outlets to drink and chant.

I have no objections whatsoever to Glassholes being chased through the streets by enraged bulls, but to be honest I'd rather it happen randomly and often rather than as part of an organised event.

Not really. Even if the matador dies or is gravely injured they still kill the bull.

You don't  have to be on the cops' side to be on the side of an awesome law that would put douchebags in jail, she said sympathetically. Plus, we'd likely get just as many asshole cops in the slammer (cf. those idiots at Abu Ghraib) so there's that.
