Subby, it'd better have a lot of fuel to slow down from solar escape trajectory to landing speed.

To be clear, this is an unmanned flyby mission by a spacecraft about the size and shape of baby grand piano. No humans or robots will be landing and walking around.

Uh... yeah

It's a fly by of Pluto, sort of like FlyNavy of Fark.

Still cool as shiat that it'll fly by Pluto and photograph the planet and its moons next year.

I can't wait.

Well, technically I can and will wait one year, but still, I'm excited.

CSB: I made somewhat of a fool of myself in front of Dr. Alan Stern, the guy who is the head of this mission. When I was in college I went to NASA to present a poster along with a bunch of other students, and we were told in advance that attending the event would be some NASA bigwigs, Dr. Stern among them. So we're chatting and talking about our work and if we're nervous for our presentations and so on when somebody walks up to our group, particularly to me, sticks out his hand and says "Hi, I'm Alan Stern."

I was expecting a formal introduction, plus he came out of nowhere, so I grasp his hand and like the true shining example of the achievement of my school that I am say, "Uhh, hi."

He then prompted me for my name. Which I managed not to forget. Then he asked everyone else, who didn't sound like they needed a minute to remember who they are. Anyway, he's a really nice guy.

Either way I'm good. Flyby as designed, or impact at about 36,000 miles per hour.

Meh, what's 6,000 miles between friends.

So how long before the FedGov takes control of the far superior SpaceX, effectively creating Weyland-Yutani? Cause it's going to happen. SpaceX will be controlled and neutered, but when? What's the benchmark?

What the hell is "New Horizons"

It's the "Pluto Express" and holds the fastest launch record last time I checked. Only one craft I can think of went faster, and that was accelerated by the sun.

Apparently the Pluto-Kuiper Express was cancelled but New Horizons is a very similar replacement.

Dwarf Planet

Considering that "super earths" seem to be the most common terrestrial planets in the universe, we should probably be re-classifying Earth, Mars, Mercury, and Venus as dwarf planets too.

As soon as the people who currently ignore them so they can make more money using outdated tech and industrial complex bloat are forced to switch.  So not for a long time.

I think Pluto knows exactly what it is and doesn't give a damn what some small-orbited blue planet living in it's mother's basement thinks.

The satellites are about the only thing that managed to keep Pluto classified as a dwarf planet. If it were closer to the sun and had no satellites, we'd probably just call it a comet.

But in case you're wondering, the New Horizons team did not plan for Pluto to be downgraded to a dwarf planet in the same year as the launch.

McKay: Neil likes to steal things from me - things like women and theoretical physics ideas.
Tyson: Yeah, but who hasn't stolen an idea from the great Rodney McKay?!
McKay: Oh, so we admit it now!
Nye: See, back in the day whenever any one of these people came up with a new idea or published a new paper, Doctor McKay here would swear that he was already working on something very similar; just hadn't gotten around to publishing it yet.
Tyson: He'd say things like, "I was about to say that very same thing," or "I was just about to have that same idea"!
McKay: Hey, at least I didn't declassify Pluto from planet status. Way to make all the little kids cry, Neil. That make you feel like a big man?
Nye: See, thanks to Doctor Tyson, Pluto is now the first of the plutoids - a new class of celestial object. It's cool! Come on, Rodney! It's the twenty-first century!

You know, does Sailor Pluto know she's not a planet anymore?

Or maybe there is a Sailor for all the Dwarf Planets. I imagine Sailor Quaoar is a real ballbuster, and that sailor Eris is a distant, Yuki Nagato/Ayanami Rei type.
