Give me $10 million and I'll buy it.

What is the lodge selling that it is asking the $6.5 million for?  The island?

I see what you did there, Subby.

Your headline was spongeworthy.

I'd buy it for that price. If it came with a Little Bird helicopter and a lifetime of fuel.

Massive forest fire hasn't happened in a while up the shores of Seeley Lake so .. you know what I'm thinking. You'll buy this property and next summer the shoreline erupts, fire engine companies can't get to you, fires crown and jump the short distance and you end up with massive rebuild.

Go ahead. Take the chance

Well that was the most depressing story about a cabin I've read today.

That is a truly ugly building.  Lovely site, if it was mine I'd bulldoze the lot and start fresh.  First thing to go would be the wooden light fittings (talk about running a theme into the ground), then the office chairs masquerading as dining chairs.

Just chop down all the trees. Problem solved.

I actually like the wooden light fixtures. But yeah I'd bulldoze it too. Make a small cabin with more room outside to enjoy. It's a beautiful island but that building takes up half of it.

The lodge, the island, a caretaker's cabin and 30 acres on the mainland.

When small houses are a million, does this really seem overpriced to you?

I love log cabins, but that one is particularly awkward and ugly. They won't sell it. Someone who can drop 6 million for an island is going to want a better house than that, and the little island in the Rockies is not nearly nice enough to attract the kind of buyer who can afford to buy the place, knock that thing down, and build to their specifications.

Parts are nice, parts need work.  I like the wooden fixtures, but the whole place has a very 'early 90s institutional' feel.  Get rid of the carpet and put in some hardwood or stone flooring, replace the plywood bar with something nicer looking, redo the kitchen cabinets, and replace some of the furniture and it would look much more modern.

Good lord that is some atrocious interior decoration. Not fond of the building design either, but wtf on some of those color choices. And who the hell uses an accordion wall divider between a bedroom and a lounge space?

I agree: buy it for the property, raze the building, replace it with something smaller and nicer.

And shoot the old designer.

Too close to all the rush-hour traffic on 83.

Still, do minerals come with the 30 acres?

So the lodge is selling itself?

Damn, Bruce Vorhauer had a pretty rough run and sheitty ending. Seems like if he had just consolidated at some point rather than keep trying to reach higher, he would have had a better ending. Why is it some people of no concept of enough?

An island in the rockies? That's like a lake in the Pacific.

Having driven past it dozens of times, I can tell you it is a pretty nice spot. If I won the lottery yesterday, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't spend my hard-earned money on it.

/would rather live in Missoula

"a tiny island floats in Salmon Lake "
If it's floating, doesn't that make it a barge, or a boat?

2014-07-13 09:14:37 PM
Nice, but not that nice. Especially for 6 million.

Maybe a million. The upkeep is going to be expensive and spring floods might be problematic. You'll need a generator and a backup one for power, so you'll have to pay a small fortune monthly for fuel to be delivered.

Access only by boat or copter means you're screwed if you get sick during a major storm. Better to build a bridge to the place.

Plus, I'm not real fond of the design of the place and it seems to have been over built for the size of the island.

Even wood supplies for the fire places would have to be boated in and I suspect that place can go through some major wood in the winter time. Plus, wood suppliers tend to gouge such folks over the price of a cord.

Then there's the septic problem. The water level on the island will be high, meaning a septic tank will need a major drain field and will probably back up periodically -- unless you have a lift station to pump it all to a field on the mainland.

Where does the drinking water come from also?

Maybe worth a million.

You don't want this cabin.  For being in the middle of no-where it is in the middle of a small Valley that has a pretty busy summer highway only about 200 yards away.  It's a windy 60MPH road so I can promise you there is a lot of 18 wheeler downshifting going on.  If this cabin was on some lake that was 10 miles down a desolate dirt road it would be another story.

I remember that whole kerfuffle. It was very strange - the sponge was never medically linked to TSS. The media did that. I can't help thinking it would have survived had they had better PR people. I mean jeez, Tylenol is still very popular, and look what that brand has been through.

This guy was done in by hubris and his own inability to manage money. First you make sure your future is secure, then you buy your ticky-tacky log cabin on a semi-private island.
