(AZCentral)   In the history of professional baseball, there's never been a game called because of grasshoppers. Except once in Phoenix in 1958   (azcentral.com) divider line 14

My favorite insect game is October 5, 2007 when midges ate the Yankees.

I don't think people were ever meant to live in Phoenix.  At least not the way we do it.

El Niño winters in Phoenix mean grasshoppers EVERYWHERE come spring.

I was walking home from school in '98.  About a mile walk.  Sidewalk was absolutely covered in grasshoppers.  Of course, as you come closer, they jump up.  Had three climb down my back before I got home.  NEVER again.

This.

/ story goes that a local Cleveland entomologist was watching the game, recognized the midge hatch, and called the Indians office telling them NOT to use DEET insect repellent, as it actually attracts the midges. The Indians thanked him, and immediately gave cans of Deepwoods Off to the Yankees. Hilarity ensued.

I think you're thinking of Bill Veeck's St. Louis Browns.

My ass. Grasshoppers killed whole leagues in the 1870s.

Scott was soliciting friends for stories for this article a couple of months ago...guess my story didn't cut it. Hope your back surgery went well Scott.

P.S.  This stadium which was the Oakland As spring training stadium, becomes ASUs new baseball stadium next year.

I'd settle for a game called on account of rain today.  Why would MLB schedule a Sunday Night Baseball game that immediately preceded the All-Star break?  (Money.  I know.  It was rhetorical.)  This is the one opportunity during the season for (non-All-Star) players to relax for an extended period and maybe take a mini-vacation with their families.  Not only did NYY at BAL start at 8 p.m. today, but now it's into its second hour of rain delay.  Baltimore leads 3-1 after 4.5 innings.  Thus, the game is official.  MLB (or its umpires-- whoever gets to make that call) should just call the damn game, already.

Yeah, I'm annoyed too. The reason its an 8 pm game is, of course, ESPN.
