Wouldn't it be cool if a US president actually could influence the situation there?

2014-07-13 10:44:33 AM
Well US presidents did spend billions developing missile defense systems for them, so they had some influence.

Is Christie still apologizing to Sheldon Adelson for his 'occupied territories' remark? Get over it, dude. I'm sure nobody noticed.

I think he means Obama needs to work harder on building a bridge between the Palestinian and Israeli people. Instead Obama has presidency burning bridges in the middle east. The next President will need to repair those bridges Obama shut down.

Because there never was unrest in the Middle East before Obama.

Someone shared this on FB this morning and I found it interesting:

http://www.popularresistance.org/understand-israeli-palestinian-apar th eid-in-11-images/

American politicians who toll the "Stand with Israel at all costs" bell are pretty disingenuous to me. Particularly those who continue to support the phony war on terror.

Republicans are so tribalistic usually with My Tribe First as their mantra on about every issue. It's interesting to see them so often demand that another tribe's interests (Israel's) be placed so blindly ahead of their own (America's) with such ferocity. They are so hypernationalistic on most levels, yet bow before a foreign nation when it comes to Israel.

No, just more Republican hypocrisy.

There used to be a complete bastard in charge of the secular state of Iraq.  He used force to keep the sectarians from turning Iraq into a religious civil war and he opposed the more religious extremists found in Iran and Pakistan.  I general he was a force for peace (albeit a very heavy-handed one) in the region.

Then Obama and his war-machine came in and screwed that all up and we've spent thousands of U.S. lives and a trillion dollars in a futile effort to stop a civil war between 10th-century philosophies armed with 20th-century weapons.

Thanks Obama.

It's still tribal; I'd guess arising from two sources. First, the anti-Arab and anti-Muslim animus held by many in their tribe. Therefore, they believe they have a shared "struggle" with Israel. Second, the beliefs evangelicals have about the role of Israel in the end times.

The right is in no way altruistic when it comes to Israel. I honestly don't think the right is capable of being altruistic.

One thing Christians agree with others on is rejecting Jesus as the messiah and that's why the support of Israel must be unwavering!

"Israel is not sure that they have America's full support like they used to,"

Tell me Chris, when did America do to help Israel blow up Palestinians when we gave them our "full support"?

Christie said Obama should be focused on trying to bring stability to the region "by having America be a forceful voice in favor of a democracy like Israel,

America, conservatives especially, do not give a flying fark about democracies in the Middle East.  We've overthrown more democracies than we've planted.  And correct me if I'm wrong, but was Hamas not also democratically elected?

"Israel is not sure that they have America's full support like they used to," Christie said.

I'm sure he arrived at this conclusion after consulting with high level Israeli policy makers and didn't just pull it out of his ass to make a political point.

It is more likely to be evangelicals pulling the strings so they can have their end of the world fantasies.

No, you had it right the first time. "Christianity" is almost completely the invention of Paul of Tarsus and had nothing to do with Jesus of Nazareth, except as a convenient fulcrum.

I forget who, but we had someone argue that Obama was responsible for the SOFA with Iraq signed by the Bush administration(he later acknowledged that technically he was wrong) and saying that we needed another Saddam.  But at the same time that person agreed with Bush's decision to oust Saddam.  I forget what thread it was in but there was a great deal of cognitive dissonance.

The Jewish vote is shrinking. If the Republicans want to chase after it, well, goody for them. Turns out that outreach can work if they do it for white folks.

But America is sick and tired of Israel's shiat, and folks are starting to wake up and realize what assholes the Israelites are in their little civil war problem.

There probably wasn't any dissonance at all.  A somewhat healthy mind will feel dissonance from conflicting ideas like those, but a completely farked up GOP mind is perfectly content with contradictions like "I think Bush was right to get rid of Saddam, and we need a new Saddam".  I think it's called insanity.

Shut down the bridge.

To Chris Christie: Dear Mr. Christie: The middle east is very likely, the most heavily fought over piece of real estate on the planet. Unnatural, present day boundaries were imposed across the region by colonial outsiders during the first half of the last century. It is going to take a while, but these boundaries are now in the process of being overturned by people who actually live in the region. And, yes, Mr. Christie, there was once upon a time a place called Israel. That was a very long time ago. But, even then, the territory known as Israel, did not last a hell of a very long time.
