Oh, they'll do it more than once.

2014-07-13 12:53:38 PM
Guess who just got a lot of free advertising?

2014-07-13 01:12:26 PM
I dunno. I think it's a pretty shiatty thing to do, and wouldn't complain if the courts said "Stop being such assholes"

2014-07-13 01:13:00 PM
And this is a new concept to anyone?

2014-07-13 01:14:27 PM
That thing is a rental?
How much do they pay you to drive it?

I think the whole "my daughter is a princess" is sexist and degrading to little girls. It gives them unrealistic expectations about what life will hand them and at worst create a generation of spoiled, entitled brats.

"I believe these [slogans] are changing the way we see each other through these labels"

You are easily offended.
You have the right to be offended.
Now STFU.
You can't take five minutes to talk to your farking kids?

2014-07-13 01:16:50 PM
If I was a little slut I'd be upset about being called a princess, too.

2014-07-13 01:16:51 PM
Trying it just once makes someone a little slut? What is this, Focus on the Family Van Rentals?

2014-07-13 01:17:53 PM
What about slutty princesses? Won't somebody think of the slutty princesses?

2014-07-13 01:18:15 PM
Both men and women fantasize or simply wonder about risks they daren't take. That's natural and healthy.

But the word 'slut' is a little over the top for a rental ad.

Well, in one corner, we have free speech. In the other, we have Aussie culture. DINGDING! Round 1.

enry: Guess who just got a lot of free advertising?

FTFA: "The online furore follows a finding by the Advertising Standards Bureau in March upholding a complaint about the company's slogan "...fat girls are harder to kidnap".
... the board found it did not breach section 2.1 of the code, which requires advertisements to not portray material that is discriminatory or a vilification on gender, race and other grounds."

"I agree with free speech, but where is the line? At what point do we say no, that's not morally correct?" she said.

I'm pretty sure Freedom of Speech id clearly defined; even in Australian law.

I'm pretty sure you actual don't agree with it.

I wonder how often those vans get keyed.

Or is that only a US thing? Because I think those paint jobs would not stay so pristine for long here.

Except the Muff Management one. That one's funny.

I think they're really talking about anal.

And pointing out the "inner slut" is a biting criticism of that practice, shedding light on the fact that no matter how many frilly dresses and tiaras you buy her when she's three, mom and dad, she's most likely gonna be riding a dick some time by age 20. Now, not that I agree that women who enjoy sex are sluts, but it is a striking enough opposite to the princess archetype to be effective for the message. But of course this is all putting a lot of deep thoughts behind some yokel painting crude words on the back of a shiatty van.

"Princess" is to "slut" as "prissy clean girl" is to "tomboy playing in the mud." That's what they were going for. An appeal to a secret desire for your stuck up daughter to want to have some lowbrow, dirty fun while camping. They had to have known they'd get a phone call or two about the slogan, but that's life. I've never been to Australia and now I've heard of Wicked Campers.

I don't know.  Back in the day, when we used to believe that we're all equal, calling a girl a "princess" was kind of derogatory, like calling her a "stuck-up biatch".  Not as bad as calling her a "slut", but still, bad enough.  Check the reaction when you answer your female boss by saying, "Okay.  Whatever you say, Princess....."

I will. Hell, most days that's all I think about.

lol...female boss.

FTFA: "It made her fear being perceived that way - especially by someone she may cross paths with who may agree with that perspective," Ms Orbea wrote on the petition.

If your 11-year-old is thinking and speaking like that, she'll probably never have to be worried about being perceived as an object of sexual desire by anyone.

it's not government's job, responsibility or even right to make you a better person.

obscenity laws are borderline anti-liberty as it is, but in my opinion the only way to go after this would be over the word "slut"
i think maybe banning a small list of words from being broadcast in public is a reasonable compromise.
otherwise, censorship is anti-freedom.

2014-07-13 01:39:00 PM
It's offensive, sure, but people get offended over things. That's life. It doesn't target any group in particular other than princesses though. How many princesses are there all upset over this? It's not like princesses are an oppressed minority.

Or is it the sluts getting upset?

If being offensive weren't allowed, we wouldn't have Fark. I have to go with free speech trumping hurt feelings on this.

Things that are seen as originating from the outside world appear to have a higher degree of validity on young minds because they present themselves as normative fact in the world, rather than opinion.

/not saying its good or bad, just is.

Wicked Campers wins.

fat girls are harder to kidnap

This one made me laugh.

But, these slogans are inappropriate for something written on the back of a vehicle.

That's not how free speech works

One would think this would be a self correcting problem, either people don't want to rent a thing with that on it, or people would vandalize/destroy the vehicle with that thing on it.

Either way, they got some great ass international advertising with this out rage of the day

in the sense that being educated makes you a better person then sure.  i meant better in terms of morality.  it's not the government's job to regulate morality.  and before you come back with the "oh, so you're ok with murder or rape" quip, i mean beyond protecting rights...which isn't a morality issue.
