...And Castro was willing to be seen with him in public.

It's a shame, really. The man used to run with Che. Now, he's down to guys like Putin.

I want to touch it, do I dare?
Will the world accept me for feeling the love that my country rejects?
Alas, I cannot, for I only have one love : Mother Russia.

Both the Soviet Union and Cuba were members of the second world.  It's not hard, folks.

First World: US-aligned free-market countries during the cold war.

Second World: Soviet-aligned command-economy countries during the cold war.

Third World: Non-aligned developing-economy countries during the cold war.

At least Fidel doesn't have to keep switching off between being an evil dictator one week, and a spineless do-nothing the next.

Weird. I thought Castro was dead.

Of course, if that were true, there would have been the biggest most butthurt thread on Fark evar in its resilient 15 years. So never mind.

If that isn't prima facia evidence that US Rightwingers are amoral, principle-less wankers willing to put party or identity before country I don't know what is.

Mr. Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna was a sociopath.  He enjoyed interrogating political prisoners with a baseball bat.

I think the point was that Che at least had the guts to do his own killing, but Putin didn't have hte courage to personally lead the infantry march into Crimea from his motorcycle... No, I'm really not sure what the point was.

No country can be third world, as the Warszawa Pact no longer exists.

Russia and Cuba were 2nd world.

By definition, USSR client states are the second world, subby.  That's where the terms come from:

First World: US/Europe and their direct clients
Second World: USSR/Communist China and their client states
Third world: Countries too poor and/or chaotic to even meaningfully participate in the cold war, or so corrupt that they were run by both sides simultaneously in near-equal measure

Am I the only person who thought Castro was dead and the cubans were just pretending he wasn't?

Cause. That's what I thought.

I get Subby's joke, but "third world" doesn't mean "poor" or "developing" country.  It means a country that wasn't aligned during the Cold War.  Insofar as the term has any meaning at all following the collapse of the Soviet Union, both Russia and Cuba are undeniably Second World.

Maybe technically, but that definition seems anachronistic given that we no longer have a Cold War. Just poor "developing" countries outside the First World tent. Not sure there's a "Second World" anymore.

Kind of like how there's no longer a "middle class," but I digress.

Weird picture. Castro is standing there mouth agape looking more than half dead and slightly older than dirt and everyone else in the shot is ignoring him and looking off to the left.

Not really sure why Putin chose now to take this trip or what he thinks this photo op will do for him. Forgiving billions in debt to Cuba that Russia was never realistically gonna see was nice though.
