"It's the Pax. The G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate that we added to the air processors. It was supposed to calm the population, weed out aggression. Well, it works. The people here stopped fighting. And then they stopped everything else. They stopped going to work, they stopped breeding, talking, eating. There's 30 million people here, and they all just let themselves die."

Just how freaking tired do you have to be to sack out in the human zoo that is any IKEA store? I've dozed off on the subway more than once, but at least a subway car has, y'know, doors.

Also in many companies, mainland Chinese also openly take siestas at their desks and cubicles as well - usually after lunch.  And the bosses don't care.

Sensible policy really.

This would be awesome if you were homeless.

I somehow don't think they would let you do that in the US.

They are kinda like America's 1%ers, just less bloodthirsty and more moral.

Communism tends to dulls peoples senses of property rights. That plays a part in this phenomenon in china, so you are right, that wouldn't be that welcome in the US (or most any civilized society).

Yes, communism does that in Communist China.

From my understanding air conditioners are not too common in China for a lot of people so their homes can end up just being incredibly uncomfortable in comparison to the IKEA warehouse that gets are conditioned to a nice cool temperature and has plenty of places to sleep.

I imagine if I was living without an AC I'd want to hang out wherever there was one too.

I guess when you work 22 hours a day and need anti-suicide nets, any time you can catch a nap it's a good thing?

The slots are sideways on Chinese Ikea products.

If you slept in an unairconditioned company dorm on a flat "mattress" barely softer than concrete, twenty minutes on an Ikea couch may be one of the best naps you've ever had.

I live here and there are just no loitering policies whatsoever.  I went shopping with my girlfriend on one of the busiest shopping holidays of the year and we stopped into a KFC or some kind of fast food place.  You had to really scout out a seat because half the people there weren't even customers and the staff never gives a shiat.  Go to an establishment, BYOB and BYOFood, no problem.  There's a good Subway franchise by my house, but it's attached to a supermarket and it's generally full of loiterers sleeping/screwing around on their phones/eating supermarket food.  It doesn't piss me off like it used to, but I still find it weird as hell.

Don't you people have homes?

This is also why they hang out in places like McDonalds all day.

I think its pretty awesome and since its IKEA I guess those are just the demo models. The photos were endearing. It seemed like such a smattering of seemingly working peoples of all ages just sleeping at a place where there are places to sleep. It seems very zen, even though the environment which fosters such activity may be the result of a variety of factors like communism and may not be related to eastern philosophies at all.

Very interesting!
