Variation happens within large populations. Who'd a thunk it?

In my own back yard I've seen white earwigs, blue sowbugs, and even a purple black widow spider. The blue mutation is rare but well known among many species of crustacean.

That's cool.  How long do crabs live in captivity?  If they can keep it around until they find another one of the opposite sex could they breed more blue crabs?  I wonder if it's one of those genetic traits that even if both parents have it the offspring might not though.
