Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: some_beer_drinker: what the fark is a reddit? am i the only one who doesn't get it?

It's like Fark, only without the censorship and PC butthurt

It's basically a site that turns people into Farkers. There's a ton of stuff over there from college kids who just had their minds blown and now want to change the world or post bullshiat pictures of them petting a cat. If you want Portal cakes head to Reddit. If you want jaded alcoholics to answer you, post on Fark.

I see nobody quite understands reddit here.  It's basically a new iteration of usenet.  There are a ton of subcultures, some gross and adolescent, others extremely well-moderated and scholarly, with everything in between.  Each one is called a "subreddit", and each one has it's own moderation style and rules of participation.

If you browse anonymously, you get items selected from the "default" subreddits, which are a little better than they used to be but are still pretty broad spectrum.  If you sign up (free) you can then begin to select your own smorgasbord of subreddits (for instance, I can recommend /r/AskHistorians without reservation) and get a markedly different and often extremely rewarding experience.

There is really no such one thing as "reddit", except insofar as it umbrellas the thousands of disparate subcultures contained within.

Sounds like they might be.

Don't have 5 bucks, huh?

I tried it about 10 years ago. A lot of fun but required too much investment in time to make it worth it.

I've heard a lot of people say this. I don't get it. How much time do you feel you need to spend to make it worth 5 dollars.

I think it's only valuable if you are part of the community there, and that takes some dedication. Otherwise you lurk, read some redlit headlines and scratch your head at the cafe threads where people wander in, introduce themselves and order virtual drinks.

So on a scale of 1-10, how self-righteous did that post feel?

I think it's a news aggregator like Fark. Read it?

In Latin, "You give back" or "You return". Which would have been really cool if the creators of Reddit knew this and named the site because of this, but according to some thread on their site, they think it's just a neat coincidence.

So, since they aren't using Latin, I can only assume this is a new English term meaning "neck beard".

Dear Doc,

I think about killing customers. A lot. Mostly the ones who are too stupid to use Google for simple problems. Then I go home, grab a beer, and pretend that work never happened.

Why can't other people be as well adjusted as I am?
