So much for NSA "reform".

The only thing Congress can be counted on for is screwing over the American public.

Governments of all stripes tend to frown on their secrets being leaked. This is far from news.

Face it, the government is gonna collect whatever data it can. Before the internet, it was just things like collecting phone records and photographing mail. Now, we put our whole lives online, and we're surprised that the government is looking at them?

You ever think about how much the internet must infuriate government? It's made it almost impossible for them to 'get away' with things. Oh sure, they do them anyway, but everyone knows now. No more laws passed in half-remembered hazes for the people to read about a week later on page five of the newspaper, to forget about as soon as they finish their coffee.

Admittedly, the internet has done terrible things to our ability to maintain an issue long-term, but the outcry is so loud and so power with such immediacy that it tends to stop this ridiculousness in its tracks.

Imagine how much they hate that.

A government that wants to spy on you already has a crime in mind that they want to charge each and every one of you with. They just need an excuse to unleash it.

So, somebody gonna filibuster it?

Anybody?

Maybe Rand Paul?  Oh no, since it doesn't involve insulting the black guy I guess not.

We need to go beyond campaigning against bills like this one and onto campaigning and donating to campaigns against the people who introduce them. This is going to continue until it costs some crooked-ass bloated old lifer of a congressman his job.

Ultimately... This.

I am all for trying to get rid of these privacy invasions, but I think it is going to come down to people taking their privacy back by treating the internet and their phones as public view.

Well I don't, but then I am white, straight, male, law abiding, have no interest in a public life, and above all I am shameless. Also fark is about the only social media I partake in and email is something I ignore. I guess texting is my only weakpoint here.

The gubmint can look at the pics of boats I am looking at, weird bugs I see, and texts about GoT episodes. When I don't want someone looking in my windows I close the blinds. If I had none, I would think twice about what I did in front of my windows.

Yes, that'd be nice, wouldn't it? I'm sure if there were one, they'd have spoken out in great volume against it.

Seriously, though, I'm surprised Fox News hasn't attacked this whole-hog. Maybe they just haven't gotten there yet.

If American government surveillance was going to lead to that scenario, it would have happened LONG before now. It didn't start only recently, y'know, it's been going on since AT LEAST the NSA was founded. We just gave 'em more information to hoard.

If he meant Teabagger Republicans, it's just outright false; if you're not wealthy, white, Christian or a corporation, they don't give a flying shiat about your individual liberty, and will expand government to cater to those who are.

If he meant Libertarians, the only ones with any realistic shot at any sort of power are just Republicans with the serial numbers filed off, like the Pauls.

And, of course, saying that 'more liberty' and 'smaller government' are automatically GOOD things just means one has a ridiculously simplistic view of the world. 'More liberty' could mean anything from 'legal weed' to 'complete anarchy' and anything in-between, and 'smaller government' inevitably manifests as 'Allow the state governments to oppress whoever they damn well please'.

But keep trotting out that "Both sides are bad so vote Republican!" line and thinking you are clever. I know you try so hard

Again, this is FAR from step one. If you think the government only recently started collecting data on us, you're hopelessly naive. And if you think they're gonna do anything with it besides put it in the equivalent of a file cabinet somewhere 'just in case' and immediately stop giving a shiat, you're hopelessly paranoid.

It's not a good thing, but it's not a NEW thing either. And every time America voted for someone because they were 'Tough on Crime', or wanted to 'Keep America safe from <Scary Foreign Enemy of the Decade>', we reinforced it, to the point that it's never going away.

It's because we keep letting them grab more power over us. Each time we do, they decide they can grab a little more. It's not a conspiracy,, its just human nature.  Meanwhile corporations are increasing their rights thanks to the Supreme Court an a sold out Congress because corporations have enough money ( which the  Supreme Court says = speech) to increase their power over the government. We have a Government for and by the Corporations.
