Probably plenty of guys would be willing to be on the receiving end of the Thorpedo

I kind of feel like the media didn't do him any favors asking the question a bazillion times over the last decade.

I kinda feel like I don't care about people's sexual preferences.  It's none of my business even though pretty much every gay person who comes out of the closet seems to want it to be.  And what's with the spiffy tag?  Is the obvious tag on vacation?

Indeed, the media would never bother focusing, on, say, Tom Brady's or Cristiano Ronaldo's love life.  How dare they ask about Ian Thorpe's!

I had no idea he was giving the Thorpedo to a guy instead of a girl.

Considering how many athletes from the Sydney games served bans of various lengths, I think there was a LOT of stuff in the water down there.

It saddened me that Irish girl got caught. She was hot.

Even Ricky Martin was thinking, "What took him so long?"

So are we supposed to throw parties or something to celebrate?

2014-07-12 06:15:52 PM
Shouldn't that be an "Obvious" tag?

That full-page photo of him in Newsweek pre-Sydney Olympics...proved to 16yo me that yes, I was gay.

FTFA: Olympic hero Ian Thorpe has bravely revealed he is gay.

It's cool that he's out and all, and I'm glad he feels comfortable being out, but he's a few years late to be given a "bravely".

2014-07-12 09:12:25 PM
Really none of my business.

There's a joke here somewhere about diving into the deep end put damned if I can find it.

So that's why he never tried breaststroke.

Yeah, I don't get the 'brave' label either. Maybe it would have actually been a bit brave to tell people when anybody actually cared, or when he was sponsored by major athletic wear companies, or when anybody just straight up asked him.

Lying about it for all these years is not particularly admirable. But maybe things are different in Australia.

Brave, brave Sir Ian
So bravely said, "I'm gay"
When poontang reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled

/ got nothin'

haha, I remember after the olympics reading (probably on Fark) about how he was going on a "speaking tour" of American schools and thinking, seriously, 18 years old and an Olympic gold medalist? He's going to be up to his armpits in high school girls. He's probably smashing 10 of them per school. Apparently the high school girls went un-smashed.

Remember, when talking about him lying all these years, reporters have been regularly asking him the question since he was an instantly world famous 18 year old. Normal people have the luxury of working through their issues and accepting their sexuality on their own timetable in private.

He had people asking him the question when he clearly wasn't ready to answer, and, a decade and a half ago, in a time when there simply weren't out  I'm trying to think of any elite male athletes who were even out back then and I'm drawing a blank on anyone but Rudy Gallindo in figure skating in the 90s.

You had reporters putting pressure trying to drag this teenage kid out of the closet in a time period when it was a big freaking deal, it's no surprise that he lied. And after you've been flat out denying it for ages, that makes it even harder to be honest because you've spent all this time insisting that it's not true. Reporters should have left him alone and stopped asking because it put him in the position where he never got to work through it on his terms.

So he likes to put the photon Thorpedo into the exhaust port. Just as long as they used ray-shielding what's the big deal?

If you're talking about Michelle Smith, that was at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Greg Louganis came out in the late 80s after he got HIV. That hullabaloo may have made others less likely to admit to being gay.

Because now we -- well, some of us -- want to go back and look at old pictures of Mr. Thorpe in swim attire and swoon anew.

Congratulations, Mr. Thorpe. It's still not an easy process at your level of accomplishment.

Oh yeah, how could I have forgotten about him and all the horrible jokes that people were making about him. He actually didn't come out until the mid-90s, did he? It was a quite a few years after his last Olympics.
