Heres the thing... I really LIKE this costume. It really does look cool and unique. The problem I have for it... is why is this very home made looking costume coming out AFTER Barbera has beem swinging around in the old costume for so long? This is a costume of a college aged girl sneaking out on her own to be a crime fighter. She throws a leather jacket and a cape on, and she climbs out the window.

This is not the costume of a Batgirl who has known and been in contact with Batman for enough years to develop a trusting relationship.

I also really hate that "NOT SPANDEX" comment there... as if stating openly that Spandex is somehow BAD. No no, let's go all 90s again and get nothing but leather and armor cause it's more BADASS... Ugh.

Sooo... Batman isn't superhuman, he's just a billionaire with a mental obsession for meting justice because of his parents, and has trained himself to become very strong.

Batgirl is just a normal girl whose dad is a cop, obviously not a billionaires, and appears to have no particular physical strength.  She's less of a superhero than Robin.

Selectively, and only if your corner wasn't written by a superstar writer in the middle of a storyline. And even then, still very selective about what they wanted to keep.

Spandex is bad. It's a piss poor choice for any kind of functional costume and it's sole reason to exist in comics was to show the character's physique. It offers zero protection from anything, it won't keep anyone warm despite the fact that characters wear it in the middle of winter with nothing else all the time. It's like women's armor in many fantasy movies and games. At least leather can offer some limited physical protection and some protection from the elements. You could say the same thing you said about spandex that you just said about leather. It's there because it shows how badass and in shape the character is supposed to be.

A) It's Meh at best
B) It's barely noticeably different.  The only big differences that are the boots at the body being two pieces instead of one.  Spandex to leather would be a major difference...if you could tell without them mentioning it, which you can't really.  The zippers and new cape clasps are OK, but minor, changes.

Functional costumes means we would see Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Batwoman, Huntress, and any non powered super hero wearing swat gear. It means capes and cowls would never be on anyones costume. It means Superheroes of both genders with buzz cuts or tight buns for long hair, probably under helmets.

And when it comes to people like Superman, Martian Manhunter, any of the Green Lanterns, Wonder Woman, or any other super powered Super Hero with any amount of invulnerability wouldn't need to worry about functionality. .

A man who dresses like a bat to fight crime isn't functional. Batman doesn't need to look like an analogue Iron Man. Like I said, I LIKE the costume design, my main fault with it is the idea that Barbara would wear that when she has a long history with Bruce, who would be providing her with equipment. If this was Barbra when she first started? Hell yeah. But Barbara who was Batgirl, then Oracle, then Batgirl again?

I just didn't like the snide comment about "NOT SPANDEX" as if that was inherently better.

...Huh, fair enough. I'll admit I kind of completely missed that. My bad... Then again that same sentiment could be accomplished if artists ever realized that Spandex does not mean Boob Socks. But then that would require DC to stop openly marketing to only 13 year old boys and 35 year old men. So yeah maybe some leather would be best there.

I'm not saying superhero costumes should be 100% functional, just less non functional, if you can understand that. Batman's cape has been functional plenty of times, as well as the cowl. Spandex has absolutely no functional purpose what so ever. Hell even Superman's cape has been functional in the past.  You can still do functional or semi functional and still differentiate their costumes. Just look at the show Arrow. That show has done pretty well in the costume department IMO. You could still tell who the characters were supposed to be, but they weren't wearing spandex for the most part.

As far as the nigh invulnerable characters you mentioned go, many of those weren't always invulnerable but they still had similar costumes. Back in the day Wonder Woman wasn't basically a female Superman. She had bracers that helped offer some protection from projectiles, but she was vulnerable to most everything else.

My local Facebook Feminist made a comment about how everyone who had a problem with the new Batgirl outfit could go DIAF.  I didn't bother to check at the time...

Quite frankly, the outfit doesn't bother me.  The posing chosen for the images on the other hand...does.  It's more demeaning than a Spandex outfit would be, in my opinion.  Congratulations, Independent Women, you're supposed to take bathroom selfies with a questioning look!

Spandex is a great material for a practical costume. Especially for heroes like Bat-person. That's why athletes wear it all the time. The problem with comics is not spandex, the problem is comic book artists can't draw spandex. They draw naked people and then color them.

Because people who shoot laser beams out of their eyes, SNIKT claws out of their knuckles, fly through cities on little wires, fly through the air and otherwise act impossible NEED sensible armor. Because the drawings that come to hurt them can get their drawn weapons through their flimsy drawn clothing.
