'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' is the best movie of 2014. Deal with that.

This statement alone speaks volumes as to the destitute condition of Hollywood. A CGI sequel about apes is the best that Hollywood can vomit up. Wow.

I actually liked the last film.

I kind of fell in love with this movie (which I haven't seen yet) because of a FB update from the Woodland Park Zoo about the research Karin Konoval did there to prepare herself for the role of Maurice. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.

This version of Apes was very good for a summer blockbuster or tent pole film. The second Captain America film was better imho.

Saw the movie last night and have to say, all hyperbole aside, it is actually a very good movie. Good script and good acting. I don't know if it's the best movie of the year, but it's been one of the most well-done movies I've seen this year. I easily recommend it.

In before people biatch about summer blockbusters being exciting and fun instead of academy award fodder...aww missed it.

When the other options are endless superhero sequels and autobots 14, I'd sadly have to agree.

I had the displeasure of seeing the trailer for "sex tape" recently. Closer and closer, year by year:

90 percent on Rotten tomatoes. 93 percent audience reviews.

Yeah, shut the fark up.  It's a good film.

Agreed on both counts.  Cap is still the best movie of the summer but there's still plenty of time left for another blockbuster...

honest question:  if i haven't seen the last apes movie, will this one still make sense?  i never bothered to see the last one because the trailer felt like it explained the entire film.  this one does look pretty cool.

Yeah maybe. Captain America was a really well done spy/action movie. Apes had a little more social/sci-fi thing going on. And on a technical level even though I'm giving props to a competitor here, had the best visuals I've ever seen.

Apes are given drugs to make them smarter. They're smarter. Years later, most of the humans die out from a virus and are in hiding and the apes are doing well on their own. I don't know why being smarter makes apes develop vocal chords that can speak English but I didn't write the script.

Cap was both a shallow popcorn flick and social/political commentary. On one level you got Cap kicking ass and beating terrorists. All the while making a valid point about the war on terror.

Yep, it's a good film. In fact, I loved the one before this. My point is, Hollywood could do better. They're basically producing cartoons for the masses. If they had never invented CGI or never stooped to the prequel/sequel level, Hollywood would be bankrupt.

Planet of the apes was very good, minus a couple small complaints. It, captain America, Godzilla, and edge of tomorrow have been my favorite movies this year.

All the exposition you ever need is in the opening credits of the new film. The only other things you need to know is that James Franco raised Caesar, and Koba was a "career" research subject.

Summer is for making money not art. Hollywood is a business and like businesses they want guaranteed money. Which is why Disney churns out Marvel movies. The want rewards not risk.

People came all over "The Dark Knight Rises," too. And sorry, it was crap.

So was "Dawn," in my opinion. . . although to be fair, the friend I went with (and whose opinion I generally respect) thought it was four-stars.

I did like the last one a lot. . . go figure.

As someone who set fire to my Millennium Falcon and TIE fighter models to make movies as a kid and then later had to learn CGI, I agree that CG is over used but movies will always make money no matter what. It'd not the US's biggest export for nothing.

No, it isn't.  It is a stellar film with some incredible performances.

Mugato: I agree that CG is over used

no, it isn't.  BAD cgi may be overused in already BAD films, but bad CGI is not on display in this (Apes) film.  The CGI in this film is seamless.  That is, you really can't tell what is CG and what is not.

2014-07-12 01:04:49 PM
Two things:

1. The lavish critical praise is deserved-it IS an excellent sequel, despite some minor quibbles I have with the humans in the cast.

2. That being said, I wouldn't regard it as THE best of the year thus far. That honor goes to Captain America: The Winter Soldier(though an compelling argument could be made for the woefully underappreciated Edge Of Tomorrow. Damn,Tom, you're a pariah at home now!)

I've been a massive POTA fan ever since I was a kid. After the war crime that was Tim Burton's abortion of a film, I was very wary when Rise came along but ended up really enjoying it. Can't wait to see the new one.

Get real. It's got some pretty good performances, but it's a film with so many ludicrous moments that even watching it, even before I got home and thought about it, I thought it was ridiculous. You Nolan fanboys need to get real. He's an excellent director with a list of excellent films to his name, but he dropped the ball with TDKR.

Your complaining about ludicrous moments in a film about a bat themed hero?

it wasn't a documentary.

it was a farking BATMAN film.  And yes, it WAS very likely the best Batman film ever made, and will not be surpassed for a very long time.  Complaining that it had some ludicrous moments is like complaining that in real life, Iron Man couldn't exist.

My point was sometimes you have just accept the story and not nit pick every little thing esp in a movie like The Dark Knight. It's a an action flick not a documentary.

Well, if we're going by Rotten Tomatoes, it isn't.  Apparently, a movie called "Boyhood" may be, though.  100%, and opening this week, so you'd think one or another bad reviews would have gotten through.

That said, I haven't seen it...has anyone here seen it?  (Cultural wasteland here, no good indie films or theaters)
