So... what went wrong?

The Netherlandsshowed the world they meant business and wanted some revenge by winning their first match 5-1 over previous winners Spain. They then showed the world they had some weaknesses by having to come back against Australia, ending in a 3-2 win for the Netherlands, before putting two past Chile, insuring the top spot in their group. In the R16, Mexico looked like they would surely win, but a wonderful late equalizer by Sneijder in the 88th minute brought Oranje back into the game, and a penalty in the box against Arjen Robben in added time gave the Netherlands a penalty which gave them the lead and the win at the last second. They too failed to really look impressive against Costa Rica, having to go to penalties after a 0-0 game with extra time. They however were flawless in their shots, putting all 4 past, and with Costa Rica missing two, had no need for the 5th.  In the semi-final match however, they again were unable to score any goals early on, and while Robben had a great opportunity near added-time, he wasn't able to finish it and this match against Argentina went to penalties. Instead of using their PK expert, they were out of subs and had to leave in a keeper who looked like he was afraid to touch the ball. Added with some poor penalties from them, it quickly was apparent that Argentina were going through to the final

Brazil started off with a very controversial win over Croatia 3-1 at the Cup's opening, followed by a nil-nil draw thanks to a great performance from Mexico's keeper, and were able to secure the group win with a 4-1 victory over Cameroon (which was likely fixed to some extent, but I can't imagine they needed Cameroon's help to win that one.)
Brazil had to go to penalties against Chile in the R16, and won 3-2, and were able to finish Colombia's run 2-1 after Colombia's first goal was called off. However, this victory didn't come without a price, they lost their captain to a yellow card and their star Neymar had a slight fracture (not to take anything away from how much that sucks) to his vertebrae, taking them both out of at least this match -- with Neymar missing the entire tournament including today's match. In the semi-final against Germany, they initially looked dangerous offensively, and were able to intercept the Germany's passes and counter-attack, but their intensity waned as Mueller put one in the back of their net, and then quickly fell to shiate in a 6 minute, 4 goal attack by the Germans. After the half, they seemed to have some new life, but it too came to nothing and it was too little, too late.

So, who's getting third place?
The Netherlands have a more talented team, but Brazil has the drive. The Netherlands coach has openly expressed that he thinks the third-place match shouldn't even take place in future tournaments, believing it to be pointless. Arjen Robben feels the same "They can keep it. Only one prize counts, and that is becoming world champions" he said. Brazil have something to prove. They are at home, and they and their fans NEED this win, the Netherlands team just wants to go home. The Brazilian coach's comments truly show the separation between his attitude and van Gaal's "Life goes on, we need to look forward to our next goal, and our next goal is to win the match for third place. We have to play it. It has become our main goal."

That being said. How excited will the Brazilians be? Their dreams have been crushed, even more so than the Netherlands team who lost, but not at home, and they lost via a record-smashing massacre. There's going to be a lot of worry about being the player that messes up and let's in a goal.

So it's team: "Meh" and team "OH GOD, DON'T MESS UP" Which one will draw blood first? I expect to see a lot more bus-parking by Brazil which may wake up the Netherlands offense, or it'll just be both sides standing their ground refusing to do much. Only one way to find out though.

oldernell: Brazil will get waxed.

Going into the headline archives...
"Brazilians waxed" was the World Cup headline posted to Fark July 8, 2014.
"Brazilians waxed" was the World Cup headline posted to Fark July 2, 2010.
The Brazil losing in the World Cup headline posted to Fark  July 1, 2006 was a cheap France joke. Remember those?

Another headline from the week of July 2, 2010: "Cleveland brewery offers free beer for life to LeBron if he stays in Cleveland."
Another headline from the week of July 1, 2006: "Cleveland is officially nervous during LeBronWatch, after Cavs offer him the maximum $80 million to stay."

So the world apparently operates on a 4-year cycle.

Brazil wins by 3.

Netherlands could care less and Brazil needs this in order to be able to go home. If Brazil loses this match the player and coaches will be stoned to death in the middle of the field

There's been so much news coverage here in Ohio that I'm wondering if there's a secret presidential election that no one's told me about.

By a convenient turn of events, the winner of tomorrow's game will in fact take over the #1 spot in FIFA's world rankings (this was by no means guaranteed entering the semifinals), with the loser landing at #2. Today's game is not quite so simple. Here are the possible scenarios ("draw" here means the match goes to penalties; while the winner of the shootout gets more ranking points, it turns out it wouldn't affect the order of teams):

Netherlands takes #3 with a win, #4 with a draw, #6 with a loss.
Brazil takes #5 with a win, and #7 otherwise.
Colombia is 3rd unless Netherlands win (in which case they're 4th).
Belgium is 5th unless Brazil win (in which case they're 4th).
Uruguay is 6th unless Brazil win (in which case they're 7th).

Some other World Ranking notes, courtesy of Football-Rankings.info:
* USA is the top team outside the Big Two at #15, followed closely by #16 Costa Rica and #18 Mexico.
* Japan at #45 is the highest-ranked Asian team

I've got Brazil winning 4-2 based on the Netherlands saying they don't give a  stront.

I hope it goes to penalties and Vlaar shoots 5 times.

Maybe he could score one.

/still not over it

Still not sure if I should change my prediction and put the bet on Brazil. Though the last time I changed my prediction at the last second, I would have had it right had I stuck with my original bet.....

Brazil needs any redemption they can get. The Dutch want to get on a plane, which is complete BS attitude imho.

Brazil 2-0

I predict Germany will score three more goals on Brazil in this game.

As a fan, I wish the Dutch would take this game seriously (and maybe they will and all the stuff they're saying publicly is just mind games). As a realist, as much as I think van Gaal is a complete twat, is kinda right.

There's no honor and no parade thrown for someone if they tear their ACL in a third-place game for the WC in a soccer power country like the Netherlands. If Brazil weren't at home, they wouldn't give a sh*t either.

Despairing Brazilians vs. uncaring Dutchmen. This is going to be the least-spirited match yet!

I like the fact that it's like 2 fat strippers being told by their boss to go out and dance for the passed out drunks at 1:30 in the morning - show some professionalism, eh?  I think this is entertaining in a sick sort of way...which loser will lose the least?

I think Robben will still probably be looking at those huge holes in the Brazilian defense that were there on Tuesday and want to score.  We'll see if Brazil even has a pulse...3-1, Netherlands.

I may be asleep any minute now.  Found an authentic Philly cheesesteak shop here in Richardson Tx that has me full of meatbabies and I need a nap. Fred's Philly Downtown is the name.  Hole in the wall with a bunch of dusty Eagles shiat on the walls.  The AC was out so it was like eating while sitting in an oven but man, great sammich.

Brazil will either put on a great performance to make up for that disaster on Tuesday or the Dutch will murder them. I don't think there's any middle ground here. If the Dutch score early, hide the children.

Brazil has some pride to play for...national pride. The dutch have just personal pride. Holland can win if Van Perry gets out of this funk, but Silva returning to the pitch will make that difficult.

I have Brazil winning by a goal, but I will be rooting for the Oranje.
