I wonder what a fish that size would sell for at the fish market?

Is a halibut that large even worth eating...I mean...between it being generally old, and the amount of mercury in it...

Correct. sport fisherman do not do "big game hunts" where the animal is killed for a trophy. Fisherman either do a live catch-and-release, or they make use of the meat from their catch.

If it takes three men, a rifle and a harpoon to kill it you might as well just call what you do whaling.

TMYK...

Where I live, the tourist go on fishing trips and instead of the catch-and-release, the crew always bring back the fish. If your down at the dock you can buy it right off the boat. I bought a 25lb mahi for 20 bucks! It doesn't get any fresher or cheaper than that.

He caught it on porpoise.

I would love to catch one, but a friend who has fished in Alaska said it's like pulling up a huge door.  I like a fish that will have a little fight.

He doesn't get to be in the record books though, since he didn't haul it in single-handedly.

The outrage of this man daring to pose next to a cute harmless animal that he killed! Make a Loserbook hit man page for him! Start the photshopping of fish posing by humans on a line! Call for the heads of all fishermen! I have sand in my gawtdamn vagina for chrissakes!!!! Everybody knows that life does not feed on life when you have no chlorophyll!

Or maybe it's time we get serious about fishhook legislation. . .

I caught a hundred+ pound halibut north of Kodiak 10 years ago and it had all the excitement of hauling up a truck tire off the bottom. Not to mention it was so rough I was as sick as 2 dogs vomiting and then eating each others puke. They serve halibut in a sherry cream sauce called Alyeska at the Glacier Bay Lodge that is to die for.

I caught a 50lb halibut in Alaska. Took me 25 minutes. They must of struggled with this thing for hours.

The halibut was shot, then harpooned before it was hauled aboard.

Fun facts:  The effect in the shark ep was the camera in a sealed up plastic bag being pulled under water.  Also, apparently Matt Dillon was such a stick in the mud about the dancing ritual John had to do some major editing to make it appear he was dancing for a longer amount of time.

And now enjoy some Marvin Pontiac

Yup. When I go offshore fishing and hook into something Im not going to eat like a sailfish Ill have the fun fight and bring it alongside the boat, grab the bill or leader for a pic and release. Im not going to bring it in the boat to pose with it.

Im sure his family will eat some and he will give the rest away to friends. The things almost 500 lbs, pretty sure he isnt eating that by himself.

Denying the world record for this is BS. If you can get a 482lb halibut off the bottom, you've won. Get him to the boat is victory. Harpooning it to get it in the boat is SOP, and shooting it is survival. It didn't increase the weight of the dang thing, so it a NEW WORLD'S RECORD, no matter what the dikheads say.

If 500 pounds of food is all it takes how come you haven't got to a warehouse club and bought 500 pounds of rice and alleviated world hunger?  It'd cost you a couple hundred bucks and you'd be a hero for single-handedly solving one of mankind's oldest problems.  Granted the bags wouldn't fit in your Prius, but that's a detail.  Don't you care about the starving humans?

/I'm surprised no one else has thought of the "500-pound solution".

Yep, they should have reeled it in then quickly hidden it below deck and covered it with a blanket. Then go back to the dock under the cover of darkness and then cleaned the fish in a secured warehouse with no windows. Maybe a couple of off duty cops to seal off the dock from tourist so no one is able to snap a photo as they unload it.

Boy, you know there are too many guns out there when fish are carrying.
