The next dates for supermoon spotting will be Aug. 10 and Sept. 9, according to NASA.

So three months of supermoon?

I got some fireworks leftover from the 4th, a big moon in the sky seems like a good excuse as any to get loaded and shoot them off. Okay, I was gonna do that already, but having an excuse means I can invite friends.

SonOfSpam: ...and completely indistinguishable by the naked eye from a minimoon (a term I just made up, just like some dickhead made up the sensationalist term "supermoon").

The term "supermoon" refers to a full moon at perigee (when the moon is closest to the Earth).  The opposite of a perigee moon is an apogee moon.  There is no relationship between full moon, new moon, etc. and perigee/apogee, but since both cycles complete relatively quickly, coincidences are not rare.

EVERYBODY PANIC!

"It's a real effect, but it's fairly small," said Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at UC Santa Cruz. "It's very difficult to remember how large the last full moon was. You kind of have to take detailed photographs and line up the photographs to see that effect."

Never mind.

2014-07-12 11:47:25 AM
So...half of the full moons happen to be larger than the average full moon? MADNESS!

I think we all know what a supermoon is and that wasn't SonOfSpam's point. His point was that the supermoon isn't really much different from any other moon.

Been nothing but total cloud cover here since Thursday night, and it's raining right now and supposed to continue all day so I guess I won't be seeing this thing in person this weekend.  Goddamn Mother Nature always ruining cool shiat.

It's just another example of hyperactive media manipulation - but I haven't yet fathomed the reason behind it. The recent wave of moon hype is so ridiculous that I think it must be an experiment being played out by some hidden sinister government agency in an attempt to put repeatable statistical metrics on exactly how stupid, banal and feckless the United States population actually is at this point, after a generation-long shift in how wealth and therefore power are distributed. The moon is bright over Lebanon tonight! The Lebanese moon looks down shim! sham! shikam!!! Cattle Explodes! Cow shrapnel drips off a tree, cascades into a mothers tear. Poor little boy who goes into battle and comes back dead, or worse, comes back a man. Why don't you warn them, moon? Why don't you say duck or scram? But the moon will not. The moon just sits there grinning like a corpse at a Dean Martin roast. What are you laughing at, moon? Why don't you share it with the whole class, moon?

the moon laughs knowingly

Nice article. Perhaps ABC should stick to video, because this whole "word" thing seems to be beyond them, not to mention the written article contradicting the video.

/are our news getting dumber?
