Do you remember lying in bed? With the covers pulled over your head? Radio playing so no one can see...

If my teenage years had a soundtrack, The Ramones would have been the lead band. Sad...

Dammitsomuch, what a bad surprise. I was just thinking about him being the last remaining original member only a couple of days ago.

RIP, 4/4 guy.

Man, last year it was Arturo Vega, and this year Tommy.

Soon there won't be anyone left who remembers the Old Days.

Their road manager and wannabe sound man Monte Melnick is one of the worst, most self important abject douche bags I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with, in over 40 years of the show business.

That's three members of the band killed by cancer. Did they rehearse next door to a toxic waste dump or something?

They all smoked like chimneys.

They all wore these cheap ass leather jackets on a stage where the temperature often exceeded 100 degrees with so much humidity that you could see the steam coming out , while jumping all around and sweating even more.
Those stage clothes were cleaned NEVER, and were worn against bare skin.

Countless numbers of leather tannery workers have died from cancer due from exposure to the same chemicals used to make those jackets.

There are stage clothes that look exactly the same, and won't bake you to death but I guess their 'management' wasn't aware of such things.

I woke up this morning with Pinhead firmly lodged in my internal jukebox & the first thing I read is this.
Very sad news.
Currently treating my neighbours to their entire back catalogue now.

RIP Tommy Ramone, the brains behind the Ramone's sound. The Ramones were the first band to bring the flag of Rock And Roll around full circle back to the thug/punk/greaser teen-age rebel element and they kicked off the last true original musical movement in the evolution of Rock and Roll that we've had in the process. He wasn't even a drummer and he invented a style of playing that arguably changed Rock And Roll more than any other drummer. He's like Charlie Watts on top of it- he makes it look like it's easy when in fact he's back there working like a madman. He ended up being the drummer because they couldn't find anyone else that could dumb it down enough playing-wise to make it sound right. And after he quit playing in the band, he still helped produce all of their records and was key to engineering the sound in the studio.

The reason he quit the band? Because he was the only smoker in the band and he got tired of hearing the others biatch about smoking in the van.

The Ramones were the last great truly unique Rock And Roll band. They are easily in the top ten of the most influential bands of all time.

-1950's: Elvis/Chuck Berry (I-IV-V Rock and Roll)
-1960's: The Beatles/The Stones/The Beach Boys
-1970's" The Ramones, Iggy

There will be new Old Days for people to remember, always are. But they're not really the old days until the music of the time hits the classic rock stations. And that's when you know you're officially old, when the music of your youth is now played on the same station as the stuff that used to play the stuff your parents grew up with.

Sad day.

Saw them in October of 1979 at The She in Dayton.  Marky was drumming, though.  The She was a little dive bar/dance club back behind a shopping center called Forest Park Plaza.  It was a great night.

I saw them play Ohio University in the 80s - was definitely a great show.  I helped out on prep before they showed up, and cleanup after they left.  In between it was an IATSE gig.

Was he a bad sound guy? And if so, what could be easier than running sound for the Ramones? Give us a story, I love a good jerk road manager story.

/Black flag came through here not long ago, didn't bring a sound guy or a road manager, Greg Ginn was the sweetest guy you could ever have the pleasure of working with. They haven't been my cup of tea since my younger days but man, they were awesome.

They were punk musicians back in the days when that meant being yourself and fark all that commercialized nonsense like "stage clothes". If they were given prop leather jackets they probably wouldn't have worn them anyway.

Yesterday I went to the mall for the first time in forever, I guess I was feeling nostalgic for the days when I was a mallrat in the '90s. farking Hot Topic selling black denim vests with the sleeves cut off with no hem, spikes and "safety pins" all over the back and shoulders, and the anarchy A screen printed on the back to look like it was srpay painted on. I wish I could go back to mid '90s and get some of those hardcore punk motherfarkers and bring them to that farking store and let them farking burn it to the ground.

I guess it's just the evolution of pop culture; they're doin to my generation (kind of, I guess technically I'm a Millenial, but I've always identiie more with Gen-X) what they did to the hippies. And the way it's going, shiat, is there even such thing as a counter-culture anymore?

Just out of curiosity, were some of the shows at Lupo's and the Palladium? I know you're from the area, and I'm just wondering if we've been at the same shows.

I've read three stories about his death so far and each one mention how the group had never found commercial success. It makes me wonder if any of these Gen Y writers/bloggers have ever heard two Ramones records back to back.
