It isn't that women want to be pretty, most do.  It isn't that not all women are pretty or that there's some patriarchy demanding to say what pretty is or isn't.  It's subjective.  It's not even that there's a wall of disenfranchised women demanding to be throught of as attractive or demanding that attractive not bean issue whatsoever.  It's the billion dollar industry that circles around a library of sh*t that women are pissed off about, either as advocates for it being offensive or pimping the must have items for the "pretty" ones, and that they are ALL manipulating women.

I raised two daughters.  It's fairly difficult to instill confidence in them without a strong female role model in the home.  I taught them critical thinking skills, I constantly questioned those things they were exposed to, I let them fail and succeed based on their own actions.  I didn't sugarcoat the scary aspects of the world.

Eventually they were able to watch a commercial, and notice on their own the hypocrisy of a 19 year old model selling skin products aimed at middle aged women, or of Unilever selling " Dove real beauty" on one hand and "Axe objectifying women" on the other hand.

This campaign seems to be run by a group of women, who aren't selling anything at least.  It's a bit of a shame they don't include a few men as well.  I'm always a little bit horrified to learn that the modern generation of young men can be equally sensitive and suckers to skin deep beauty concerns as well.

Because they need you to click on the pictures for their viral marketing campaign to succeed, none of the models is more than 1/2 a standard deviation away from the attractiveness of the average fashion model. This is still about selling fashion, after all.

It would be a lot more convincing if they got some pictures from the People of Walmart site and commented positively on them.  It's a lot easier to sell empathy towards clean, well presented people, who are well photographed in a visually striking environment.

People pushing tolerance always stop short of tolerating "those people."  I want to see a Coexist bumper sticker with a Walmart symbol on it.

I'm old, often unshaven, bald, with glasses, a bit overweight and dress in ratty t shirts most of the time.  I can assure you all my beauty is on the inside at this point.  By focusing on what's external, I think this campaign is doomed to fail.

How dare all of you find the things attractive that you do! You are all bad people for not being attracted to the things that nobody is attracted to.

I fully defend the right of women to be obese and see themselves as beautiful. It`s good to be confident, life will walk all over you if you are not.

I also fully defend MY right to not see fat people as beautiful or sexy and to say `nope nope nope` and my right to not lie.

This is not oppression, this is me finding the sight and feeling of fat disgusting and the polar opposite of sexy.

I find fat on myself unsexy and so does my other half.

I`m sure people who are fat are beautiful on the inside, not bitter twisted self stimulators who can`t put down the cake.

I`d like some tone to my sexual partner. I don`t find sliding into the folds of a warm half filled water balloon sexy.

Having been fat and not fat I can simply remember what it was like instead of imagining a situation I have not been in. I also know what is needed to go from fat to not fat and back again.

Fat people have issues. That is why they are fat. People with issues make less good partners, it`s that simple. Like a racist tattoo on the forehead, your body image is altered by what your mind thinks (because that dictates what your body does, which in turn affects how it looks) and can be an indicator for your internal mental state. People aren`t judging you because of the fat but more on what the fat says about your internal mental state. In the case of the person with downs it says "I have downs" which also eliminates them from people I am considering for a sexual or bridge partner.

Happy people just don`t have the time to sit around for hours eating cake. They are too busy having a good time.

Also Beauty is a Lie

Would definitely hit Smart, White Enough, What's Wrong (I agree, "nothing", unlike My Relationship - Ugh!), Worthless, Prison, My Boyfriend

Maybe Choice, The Rules, Hungry, Objects, and Worth, but not really great pics for deciding.

But - And take note of this, Ms. Rice (and Ms. Huffington) - That has nothing at all to do with whether I would hire them, respect them, consider them friends, or any of a million other non-physical ways of relating to people that I can't tell solely from a set of demotivational posters.  Kudos for falling on your own sword, ladies - Explain that you have more value than your appearance with a campaign that gives me no context to work with except your appearance.  For all I know, Ten Years may count as one of the ten best coders in the world and I would beg for the chance to work with her for a few months, but your posters tell me nothing about that.

Unless of course you meant that as the point, in which case - Welcome to the physical universe, where this group of sentient apes evolved on a blue-green mudball in an unfashionable backwater of the Milky Way precisely by decoupling the contents of our brain from the urges of our loins.  I can lust after you and respect you, and the two need have no connection.

2014-07-12 09:41:42 AM
Just to clarify, I don`t place the value judgement of a person on their looks, just the judgement on whether I would fark them. What someone wears, how they act and indicators of past behaviour (like tattoos, piercings or weight gain) says things about them and people get judged on that.

The unfortunate thing is that most people (women included) tend to employ people they would fark over ones they would not and treat people they are attracted to better than people they are not attracted to. That`s pretty hard coded human behaviour at this point though...

When I was younger it was the only way I could guarantee getting a job. If the person interviewing me was female I got the job. Males refused to hire me.

I was mortified when my 4-year-old son began asking loudly, "Where did pretty lady go? Where did pretty lady go?" after a house guest's wife went outside for a run.

Me: "Well, that's embarrassing. My 4-year-son is hitting on your wife."

Mark: "No bid deal. She gets hit on by boys that age all the time."

/ So yes, that ad campaign is going to change 80,000 years of hard-wired primal attraction to peak human nubility, fitness, and fertility.

There is an older woman who writes mystery novels where she goes on about this quite a bit. I read one of them once when I had nothing better to read. Her thing is that since older women are invisible, she and her trusty sidekick (also an older woman) can go out and snoop and spy on all kinds of things, and no one will pay any attention to them. So they can solve murders because no one even gives them a second thought.

Apparently there's a whole series based on this. I thought it was a pretty amusing idea, since I'm getting to that age myself. Let's just say that I'm glad I"m not short.

Don't let your friends say you have no taste
Go ahead and marry anyway
Though her face is ugly, her eyes don't match
Take it from me, she's a better catch
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Also...

You're not your breast size. You're not how much money you spent on plastic surgery. You're not the size of your dress. You're not the contents of your purse. You're not your designer clothing. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

That's the only kind.
She'll never ever leave you
And if she does you won't mind.
