jehovahs witness protection: Deep down, aren't we all unregistered sex offenders?
Private_Citizen: Tow companies often flirt with extortion and theft. It's an industry overdue for some regulation and oversight.
spawn73: I saw some of those documentaries on TV.What really legally prevents you from just going in and repossesing your own car?
Because People in power are Stupid: Bad picture of some random tow truck.A brief internet search yields this:[scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net image 850x634]As well as his mugshot:[www.gannett-cdn.com image 534x401]And one of his previous schemes (and younger mugshot)http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/02/salem_man_accused_of _i mpersona.html[blog.oregonlive.com image 240x300]And one can not ignore this article interviewing his exwife.http://www.katu.com/news/local/15899652.htmlSince he was an illegal tow truck, I was expecting more meth.
Nix Nightbird: I say we all turn our backs for a few minutes to look at some pretty flowers or cat pictures while the police punch him in the head a few dozen times.
The Irresponsible Captain: It is my opinion that towing companies aren't regulated nearly enough. This guy should have been caught the moment he showed up an an impound yard without the right paperwork.
StokeyBob: spawn73: I saw some of those documentaries on TV.What really legally prevents you from just going in and repossesing your own car?Or changing the lock on the door of a pawn shop.
GBB: spawn73: I saw some of those documentaries on TV.What really legally prevents you from just going in and repossesing your own car?The law.
spawn73: StokeyBob: spawn73: I saw some of those documentaries on TV.What really legally prevents you from just going in and repossesing your own car?Or changing the lock on the door of a pawn shop.I don't get it.What I am not understanding, what legal authority do they have to take your car, and demand money to return it? What legal authority do they have from preventing you from taking what is yours?
Nix Nightbird: Answers:None.None.None.
Odoriferous Queef: favorited!! Boobies
Nix Nightbird: I think the towing business would fade away
Lego_Addict: Still the best Towing Company out there:[cameltowing.com image 388x198]
DarkVader: The Irresponsible Captain: It is my opinion that towing companies aren't regulated nearly enough. This guy should have been caught the moment he showed up an an impound yard without the right paperwork.Oh, they're definitely not regulated enough. And for the most part, they're as immune to the law as the cops are.Where I am, to legally tow a car from private property, a tow company must have the written authorization to tow that specific car, either from the vehicle owner or the property owner. If it's not the car owner authorizing the tow, there must either be a sign indicating the parking policy or the car must have been there for 10 days. It is a misdemeanor to tow a car without written authorization. It's also a misdemeanor to fail to contact the police and the car owner after the car is towed, and it's illegal to collect storage charges if they fail to do so.These laws are utterly ignored. Tow trucks roam parking lots near the local university campus looking for cars to tow, they routinely do "grab and go" tows with no paperwork, they tow from parking lots with no signage, they don't contact anyone about the tow, and they are NEVER prosecuted. If your car is stolen by these scumbags, they force you to sign a waiver of your right to sue before they'll return your stolen car.The local judges routinely dismiss lawsuits against towing companies, and taking a towing case to the Court of Appeals will in many cases cost you more than the value of the car, with no guarantee that you'll get anywhere.
lindalouwho: So he can't tow any vehicles newer than 18 years old?I'll show myself out.

StokeyBob: It appears this guy was messing with people vehicles at a trail head. I don't think it gets any lower than that. Then again maybe it caused problems for the property owner...but still. And I wonder if they did any shopping there on the way out.
