Used to be common place over here - don't hear of it much now - probably because most toerags have finally realised how actually boring it is

Perhaps he was giving a lecture on police helicopters and wanted to point out the different aspects of the fuselage.

The police helicopters should be outfitted with laser seeking 10lb bags of shiat.
It would serve the dual purpose of deterring these assholes, and also being hilarious.

You got to be a dumbass to point a laser at an aircraft, and an even bigger dumbass for getting caught doing it. Seriously, if a person did that you wouldn't think that they would stick around in the place they did it from.

If you're dumb enough to point a laser at a police chopper looking for a suspect because "they're too loud" you're probably dumb enough to do it from your own back yard, like the guy in the article.

Back in the '90s I was starting to think that I would never be able to go to another public event without 100 d-bags shining lasers all over the place and disrupting things. I am glad that trend faded away.

There is a very real lesson here.
The population of humans provides more than enough idiots doing what idiot humans do.
A laser pointer just cries out to many humans to be used.
Just like the human hammer and nail analogy.
To a human holding a laser, the cry is most irresistible.

Now we have the same problem with our militarized domestic police forces. Hammers have been given weapons and YOU look like a nail.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. Crazy as in the fact that the helicopter actually was flying toward the drone to "observe it" and had to divert course to not hit it. So the helicopter was essentially playing a game of chicken with the drone, then all of a sudden it "was coming right at them", and they diverted their head on collision course, narrowly avoiding a crash by merely a few hundred yards. Yeah, let's see if that flys.

Bonus for the police lying about the Phantom's altitude. "Your honor, that militarized combat drone was flying at 2,000 feet!" Atty: "uh, no". Cops: "you NEVER let us have any fun!!"

THIS.

I'm a Floridian and I can tell you first hand that people who are actually from Florida are a huge minority. In South Florida, especially, the majority are from the Northeast (if you don't count the latin's who long ago ruined Miami and are for teh most part illegal anyway).

Eddie Adams from Torrance: The police helicopters should be outfitted with laser seeking 10lb bags of shiat.

The main logistical hurdle to overcome here is determining what kind of shiat to use.  Baby shiat seems like the obvious choice in terms of stench, liquidity, and availability of source material.  But I'm not sure how you'd orchestrate the collection of it in such large volumes.  Cow and horse manure would be easily collected and certainly smell bad enough, but it would be more of a ballistic weapon than a biological one.

They come from every other state in the US, act like maroons on vacation, you can buy any body part here- fake boobs being in the #1 position. Everyone is hot under the collar (it's HOT here) and all carry a weapon. Home invasions usually end up with dead invaders. People shoot dogs at will. Once I saw a woman lying (dead?) on the side of the road in Daytona at 9pm, she was still straddling a bicycle. I stopped the car (wouldn't get out on a dare), asked if she was ok or needed 911, not expecting this dead person to speak, who seemed to be hit by car. She raises her head and slurs, no 'm fine..live dere. Got up straddled the bike, I guess nap time was over, and we all continued on our journeys. That's normal around here.
I live here and BTW am NOT an idiot. I'm probably in the 1 percentile.

What's with all of these idiots using helicopters when cars & dogs work just as well and don't wake up the entire neighborhood at 3am?   Keep the ghetto birds in the ghetto, or preferably on ground.

Also...seriously... has anyone ever tried using a laser to hit a target at distance?  Try hitting the photocell on a streetlight.  It's about the same size as a human eye, isn't moving, and is easily 50x closer than a helicopter.   If you hit it dead-on, the streetlight will go out.  I'm not sure how people are hitting someone's eye in an aircraft that's 1,000 feet away and moving 30-60mph.

Helicopters allow you to follow someone without crashing into a minivan with six kids and their dog on board because of chasing the guy for failure to stop.

Sean M: Also...seriously... has anyone ever tried using a laser to hit a target at distance?

Laser beams expand at a distance. And they can blind pilots and aircrew.

These people need the boots put to them. Medium Style.

They aren't really... TFA stated "The two pilots in the chopper reported that they had been "disoriented" by a laser" which translated to "Ok, we got another idiot we can throw a felony charge at. Where did it come from?"...

The first time I took my son and a few of his friends out for a small astronomy lesson I had my green laser (which is perfect for it, IMHO) and while I was pointing out a few stars and my son sees a cessna flying nearby... His immediate response was "Dad! Put your pointer on that plane"... He got Gibb-smacked for saying that, followed by a lecture about how stupid that was, felony charge and all...

I've been up high enough to be able to see the diffused dot on buildings about 2+ miles away, and if I tried to put it on something further away I'd be lucky to see a hint of green, but for a $20 laser, it's quite decent for the task of astronomy, for example... As for "blinding a pilot", I doubt it personally, but while common sense is apparently lacking here in Flori-duh, I'd rather not take the chance of being in the crash zone if it did happen...

In almost all cases, the lasers are green.  Wearing red glasses would greatly reduce any effects.

There are IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) training aircraft that used red on the windows and had the student wear blue glasses (or vice versa) that work very well.  The instructor has no problem seeing out, but the student cannot.

Simple fix.
