I mentioned last week about making and selling a Caturday t-shirt if anyone is interested. I spoke to Sherpa who suggested using the Caturday tag as a design. Here is the design - let me know if you are interested and/or want one.  If you don't like the design, feel free to suggest what you would like.  Thanks!

Ms MacGyver: I just wonder - is he in pain?  Am I just prolonging the inevitable?

Forgive the emphasis..and please don't take it wrong, but..

ASK.  THE.  VET.

I'm sure there's bad/less-than-good ones out there..but I've NEVER known a Vet who didn't care, personally, about each and every one of their charges..  The Vet won't lie to you..won't sugar-coat a bad situation..

The Vet is *right there* with Rufus..is yer frontline treatment and info source..  Ask questions..for good or bad, you'll get what you need to know to move forward..

I was in line at the grocery store yesterday and the woman in front of me had lots of kitty food and treats, so naturally I asked her how many cats she had. She didn't have any, the food was for the cat that she took care of. She told me that the owner was in assisted living and the people there had taken her cat to a shelter. The elderly lady called a taxi and went over to Dumb Friends League and got her cat back. I couldn't believe that someone would be so cruel and heartless, but I love the way the owner wouldn't let them get away with it.

If someone tried to take my cats away, this is what they'd see. I'll have to teach Morticia how to shoot, I wouldn't trust Juno or Lucy with a gun. Especially not Juno.

Got tale of Recent Elephant Rescue for DLC & whoever else ...
Abused Elephant Raju Sheds Tears During Rescue by Cherise Udell 7:04AM today
Raju, a 50-year old Indian elephant was finally rescued last week after a lifetime of abuse. During the rescue, when it became clear that the group of 32 people, which included ten veterinarians, were there to rescue him, big crocodile tears rolled down his leathery cheeks.
"The team was astounded to see the tears," said Pooja Binepal, a spokesman for Wildlife SOS, the wildlife rescue group that coordinated the effort.  "It was incredibly emotional. We knew in our hearts he realized he was being freed. Elephants are majestic and highly intelligent animals. We can only imagine what torture the past half a century has been for him."
Indeed, poor Raju who had been likely captured as a baby, was sold many times during his 50 years. His most recent owner cruelly chained him 24-hours a day with spiked chains, forced him to work and beat him when he did not.
During the rescue his sadistic owner tried to abort the rescue by layering tight chains and spikes on the elephant and then yelling commands to confuse Raju. Fortunately, Raju listened to his rescuers instead and soon was free.
Following his emancipation, he was taken to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura, India. His underweight body was covered in abscesses and wounds, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Wildlife SOS is facilitating his medical care and helping to introduce him to other elephants at the center. On July 4th he took his first free steps in 50 years.
The average lifespan for elephants is 60 to 70 years, so hopefully Raju can enjoy his retirement and freedom for years to come.

Yes, the little vandals have cost me over $1500 in the last year and a half, not to mention the lack of sleep and stress of dealing with this crap. Police are zero help unless I have hi-def 3D video complete with Michael Bay explosions and lens flare effects.
/maybe a tranquillizer dart and radio collar like they used on Wild Kingdom.
//at least I could find out where they live so I could sue the parents for damages.

Or I could hire these guys...

Had similar issues.. resolved with a Beckett ignition transformer and a stay- at- home neighbor with a remote control.... pants were pissed... problem is that you have to do the parents first, then the offspring... and gotta catch them when they are not in heat......

I've got a 50KV (current limited) neon sign transformer wired to the lock on the garage door just in case, but most of their dirty work is done from a distance with eggs, lemons, large rocks, bricks, etc. I love the extra button on the garage door remote that closes relay contacts. I use that to power the solid state relay that turns on and off the high voltage. I've only been bit once and yeah, it hurt. ;-)

Gentlemen, may I recommend... a Spraymore Mine?

Rig up a soda bottle with a command-actuated valve, fill with essense of skunk oil (the type hunters use to mask their scent) and water, mount the bottle valve-side down to allow gravity to force the substance out the valve, site device near known enemy trails/weapons emplacement locations, rig trip wire or use remote control as you prefer, conceal device under camo, and sit back and enjoy the screams.

It's a site that does what you need it to do.

Will it stop people who care from donating..?  No.

Will someone planning to donate $100 donate $90, instead, because o'the fee..?  Mebbe..

Will someone donating $5 bail, cuz the cost is $5.90..  Nope..

Pretty sure we all unnerstand that a business model is geared to make money..and that that no affects our personal feelings of charity one single whit..  =)

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Leepj: I've tried to get him into a harness, but he's not at all cooperative and gets downright hostile (which means lots of pretty hard bites). I'll keep trying, though.

They seriously make harnesses for birds? Wow. I did not know that, but I've never been a bird caretaker. I knew people who were, but that was YEARS ago. One lady (school chum's aunt) bred exotic birds and kept the parent birds as family members/pets, too. They were all over her house. Some of those birds can break bones with their beaks I've been told. I know how hard it can be getting a harness on a cat, and that's just a little blood here and there if the cat disagrees with you that wearing a harness would be a smashing idea. I can't imagine going to the ER and having to tell them my bird kicked my ass so hard I think it broke my hand.

What would be the purpose of putting a harness on the bird? Is it to prevent the bird from taking off on you if you are out and about with it? That's the only thing I can imagine. That would be safer than just clipping wings, wouldn't it?

I'm kind of scared of birds in general, btw. I still think they're neat looking (if they are Over There) and am always impressed with their caretakers. Unless it's a turkey. There's only one kind of turkey you should ever have in your home and you don't keep it as a pet. It's too golden brown and delicious for that.

<snip>

You hit the nail on the head as far as the bird harness use. Cricket is a conure, which is quite a small parrot. When he bites he can bruise and draw a bit of blood but not break bones; so no ER visits for us. He's only about 7 or 8 inches long without his tail and about twice that including his tail. We've never been bird caretakers before. Our son's girlfriend had to move him and we were the only place available. I was a bit leery, but we fell in love with him almost immediately.

These are cracking me up!

These are a great find! lol! I knew there had to be a shared protocol among cats. It is apparently handed down from mamma to kittens. I just finished feeding Hisss! and Children of Hisss! and I swear, she's already taught one of the wee ones that when you want food from the laydee inside teh house. you rub your face alllll over the sliding glass door and look up with pleading eyes - and hiss. :-/ REALLY? Oh, for pity's sake.

I've got to get a rescue to help me find these guys homes. I've figured out where I can put the babbies temporarily when I catch them (Oh dear gods - I'm going to have four kittens in my house. nononononononono....) but I can only FOSTER these widdle dudes and dudettes, I cannot afford spay/neuter and shots for 'em all and the local rescues can't either. They can get it done cheaper, but they want me to pay for it. So I really need to start working on the local rescues again and go out to county animal care and control and apply for a grant to get them all "fixed".

There is a grant I've been told (after multiple calls to multiple places - some more than once), I just have to figure out the magic words to get to it. I have a feeling "I am already spending tons to feed them and have traumatized many animals to get them to temporary safety, so give me some moneez to get them fixored and their baby shots, you bastards" are NOT the magic words. I might have to add "Please".

Happy dolphins?
[crunchpost.com image 500x492]
/Must not be any Japanese "scientific" vessels around.

the magic words are USDA FERAL NEUTERING FUNDING.
that's how I got Bubba done for $27.50.
I was told each vet gets one voucher per month.
you have to be ringing the vets phone as they walk in the door
to get it. I lucked out in that a local clinic has 5 vets. which means 5
vouchers. maybe you can find some clinic with multiple vets, too

Ours is the opposite...TV will stay on, but phone and internet quit. And it all comes through the same single UNDERGROUND cable so storms should not affect it.  Still better than the sloooowww service I got with AT&T though.  It got so bad that I couldn't even upload pictures to the internet.

And a cat, although a wild one.

As an ISP guy who doesn't work on the resi side anymore, it sounds like both issues are because of the way your cable companies did the network setup.  If TV goes out, but phone/internet stay on, it sounds like the power failed at the hubsite, and there's only some devices on UPS, and video devices usually aren't in my experience.  So video connections drop, but phone/inet stays on.  Or it could be that the power blip fried the cards passing video traffic.  And that just sucks for everyone, especially the poor guy who's got to go out and replace them in the tail end of the storm.

Julian is a really needy boy and has a requisite amount of chest-rubbing, noogies, scritches, and spine massages that must be performed daily. Definitely my boy:

Abby remains a little more solitary, getting and giving her attention in smaller doses, but she seems quite happy, and her obsession with the sink has lessened, which makes teeth brushing a lot easier. Anyways, her orange has really come out with the summer:

Our backyard about two weeks ago:

Not bad for very little work. The rose bush in the back really came out well this summer thanks to a little prudent spring pruning, and the daisies are the result of a small number of seeds three years ago, and the poppies have doubled this year.. they just do as they will and I try to keep things wet and growing. Wish I had a vegetable garden but all the soil here in Calgary is garbage for growing, and I didn't have the time or money to build raised beds this spring. Maybe next year..

Happy weekend all.

They are just adorable.
I don't know if this will help, but i have never had anything but a short hair, and was really not interested in the hairier models as they come with issues of grooming, shedding, etc.
But then Howard stole my heart.  Now, he isn't a long hair, so that may be way worse, but as a medium hair he is a LOT fluffier than my previous cats.  I am really amazed, he is not much more involved than the shorthairs.  We do brush him regularly, which he loves, but he doesn't seem to shed any more than Cleo or Blitz did.  No hairballs, no dingleberries.
I dunno, maybe I just got lucky, but it has not been the problem I anticipated.

A little backstory.  My rooms a mess because my previous kitty went over the rainbow bridge a few weeks earlier and I had been rather distraught about it.  I needed some companionship and decided to get 2 kittens.  I searched around on a sunday for what I wanted...I knew I liked calicos, and to try and eliminate possible meeting problems I wanted to find 2 sisters from the same litter.  It didn't work out that way.  I found Rella at one adoption event and rosie at a different store.  Rella (long hair half solid black/brown/white face) was shy and I was wary about a long haired cat, but she was just adorable, so I adopted her, drove home with rella dead silent the ride home.  I put her in the room with the clean poop box, and she looked around a bit nervously meowed twice then went in the corner inbetween two boxes to hide.

At this point I wanted her to settle into surroundings to relax so I ran to the other pet store and got Rosie.  (Mostly white face with mackerel/brown/white coat)  Rosie was much more vocal on the ride home and when I got home rella was still between the boxes.  I let rosie out of the carrier and she immediately started casing the joint, curious and brave in the new world.  I opened one door to my computer room and not wanting to pressure them I just sat at my computer and started playing a game.

Then this happened.  rosie starts to seek attention, and this draws rella out...don't underestimate the jealously factor.  I've seen it way too much with these two new sisters.

gremlin1: That sounds good. I saved it to try later.

I hope it works out well, then. I adapted it from something my grandmother made, with additions suggested by college roommates and general foofing around. Ex-GF, parents, friends, and bo-workers have all liked it. I might try the slow-cooker recipe you mentioned next week, since I now have a slow-cooker. Have to go obtain some turkey though, since all I have is chicken and tuna right now.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: I even got two beef tenderloins for 99 cents a pound.

You guize are swapping recipes just in time for me to tell you of my massively awesome meat department haul! I went up to the grocery to grab ONE THING I needed for tonight's dinner (French dip sammiches with caramelized onion and green bean "fries") and checked the meat department for the stuff marked "today's special" - just like I always do that time of morning. So I am there and see that they were running late putting the marked down meaty stuffs out, because there's lots of it. I am pleased by this and beeline it straight to the area with the roasts. I find a roast marked down stupid low - it's $1.14 for the entire roast. I am SUSPICIOUS! How old this roast? What is wrong with the roast? Whyfor is it so cheap? Is it a terror roast that doubles as harsh, judgmental social commentary about the greed and gluttony of the average American and is therefore laced with weaponized E. coli? WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS ROAST? I'm getting ready to put it down when I notice that it has been mislabeled. Instead of $3.59/lb (or whatever) it is marked down to $.35/lb So they've dropped a digit somewhere. I kind of chuckled and then noticed ALL of the "today's special" meats I could see so far were marked down incorrectly so that they are less than a dollar pound. ALL OF IT.

I'm up there at least every other day - if not every day - because I like to pick my day's veggies the same day, with very few exceptions. I want them fresh as can be without driving to the farmer's market and I'm not always sure what kind of veggie sounds good until that day anyway. They KNOW me up there very well. They'll spot me elsewhere in town and talk to me like I'm their best friend ever. So of course I have to tell them. They're almost like having friends. As I'm getting ready to push the bell, the butcher dude comes out with a younger dude trailing him and I wave the roast at him and say "Dude? Duuuude." (Yes, I really do talk like that and yes, people really do understand what I mean) He says "We know, he's still learning." then he tells the kid, it's OK, I'm in there all the time and I'm a very nice lady, no one is in trouble, stuff happens, let me have the mistaken markdown. He tells me they will honor the prices and simply pull whatever I don't take and mark it correctly. So they're fair game. He had the kid follow me with the cart to pull anything I didn't want and was asking me stuff like "are you sure you don't want this skirt steak?" "Why thank you, sir. I did not see that skirt steak!" I even got two beef tenderloins for 99 cents a pound. Two NICE, (one darn near showcase perfect) beef tenderloins for 99 CENTS A POUND. Holy crud. I will not have to buy meat type items for a long while now.

I just spent slightly over two hours cutting steaks, chile verde/carnitas cubes of pork and breaking down assorted meats into manageable and desired cuts. He had gone back for the chicken when he discovered his error and I showed up, but that's OK. I already have plenty of chicken in my freezer. That's what we're having tomorrow, matter of fact.

Anyway, my big freezer is so full now I don't have room for ice cream. I'm having a hard time feeling sad about it though. I do believe that is my most epic grocery score EVER. This month with me the only one in the house with money for anything - well, we weren't going to starve, but this was still definitely the best time for such wonderful luck to strike, that's for sure!

A few minuets later I heard  something by the tree and looked over just in time to see her fall off of the limb and land in the horse paddock below. She did not land on her feet either, just kind of plopped down into the soft sand. She shook off the sand and went back to hunting the lizard she was after. Silly cat.
She was only about six or eight feet off the ground when she fell.

That's some lazy hunting right there. lol!

gremlin1: southwest chicken stew on the stove. Actually the original recipe calls for turkey but...

This is similar to one of the recipes I use:

0.5 lb smoked sausage sliced into small pieces (or 0.5 lb ground beef)
1 medium onion (chopped)
2-3 cloves garlic (minced)
1 can black beans (or chili beans)
1 can diced tomatoes (not stewed, diced have more flavor)
0.5 cup water
1.5 cups minute rice (can use brown rice for health naziism)
Cayenne pepper and cumin to taste

Sauté onion, garlic, and meat in 1 tbsp. oil in large skillet on medium-high until onion's mostly cooked. Drain. Add beans, tomatoes, cayenne, cumin, and 0.5 cup water. Stir well. Heat to boiling. Add 1.5 cup rice, stir well, turn heat to low and stir every few minutes until water is mostly absorbed (5-10 min.) Recipe can be doubled, probably quadrupled. Reheats well. Goes well with cheap red wine and biscuits.

(If you substitute instant mashed potato flakes for the rice, the potatoes absorbing all the red color of the tomatoes makes the dish look like bloody Ebola stew with meaty bits. Tastes fine, but looks sort of off-putting. Might work for a Halloween party that way....)

I just finished putting my southwest chicken stew on the stove. Actually the original recipe calls for turkey but I don;t have any so I use chicken, it also calls for green peppers but I don't like them so I used yellow and red peppers.1can of mild chili beans and 1 can stewed tomatoes ,1/2 cup of salsa toss in some chili powder and cumin and a little salt. It's also supposed to cook in a slo cooker for 5 hours on low. I don't have a slo cooker so I use my big pot on top of the stove on low until it looks done. I also toss in some white wine cuz it can;t hurt.

CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED: I's said it afore, and will say it now.. Sometimes I post here because..iff'n I post anywhere else, FB in particular..the fires of Hell will rain down upon me.. Caturday is far more tolerant..and a much bigger member base than my friends-list, anyways..  I don't have many on FB..  I'm not a  "Friend Collector".. So, if you came here just lookin' fer cats, you may want to skip this post..  Nothing of value will be lost.. That said.. About 2am (yah..been a lot going on..needing to deal with..this is old "new" news..  =P  ), HM's son comes up and says "We need to talk" Oh, joy.. Well, without full direct confirmation, I can't say..but this surprises me not.. "son" says mother (HM) had a really bad day and was pissed..was talking with her lawyer friend online (yah, valid, I know who that is) and was having papers drawn up,  gratis, that basically state that the boy and I help with maintaining the household or we will be summarily evicted.. "Son" is distressed..even moreso when I laugh..  =D I am the sole income provider fer this household..period.  full stop.  ..and I do what I can, otherwise, when able..  Take me out of the equation..?  Oh yeah, the household ceases to exist..  Bring it.. She posted, last nite, to FB a comment that included the phrase "..there is no reason I should have to live like this.." O'RLY..? Me, either.. I could, this moment, pack my shiate and move back to Buffalo today..where m'best friend has (and has had, fer over six months) a room waiting fer me..that is already furnished with a bed, desk, desk chair and antique rocking chair that he bought at auction cuz he thought I'd like it.. Double, triple, whatever bonus..? The apartment is at the corner of where the City of Buffalo meets two northern suburbs..  Malls as far as the eye can see..  100+ businesses within a 2 min walk..  I would have a job in a day..  (keeping in mind that best friend is fully supporting the apartment, utilities and food fer himself..he is, sadly, perma ...

Sometimes you just need a place to vent without recriminations. Caturday people will listen and offer help or advice when asked or even if you don't ask.

yobbery: It varies. We currently use a mobile groomer. That costs $60 without a bath but it's nice because it's done in the driveway. Prior to that one of our vet's technicians did grooming on the side. She only wanted $25 without a bath.

My Wife does all nail trimming. When they see her get her reading glasses they run like Sherpa's at the door, but she eventually gets all of them.

Most shelters will trim for a small fee. Many do it free if you were selected adopted there.

I kind of figured I'd be looking at $60-$100, depending on what services I wanted. Thanks for the lowdown for your area! That gives me at least some idea and it looks like I wasn't too far off when I consider my region (expensive) - 'cept I'm adding the bath in there and possibly his widdle pedicure. His vet charges $12 for the nail trim, but I figure they'd be a bit more expensive than a kitteh spa.

domari: Hope everyone here is doing well lately. I haven't had a lot of time to check in on Caturday, kitten season is keeping me running non stop. It's really bad again this year, too many cats, not enough room or money to take them all in. I wish everyone would just spay their cats and end this madness.

More challenges to add to it all, I was diagnosed as a diabetic a few weeks ago. On medication that makes me feel like crap. I felt better before I had to take it. It's not working. Trying to starve and avoid all the stuff I'm not supposed to it, isn't working. Ugh... not happy with this BS.

Big thank you to those of you who donated to Little Mews in memory of QJ's mom. It was so sweet of him to think of us at a time when he was mourning the loss of his mom. The donations helped with our huge vet bill.

New kittens arrived a couple days ago and sent off to foster, hopefully adopted soon. It's summer so the adoptions have slowed to a crawl but who can resist this cutie with definite tortitude!!

She is ADORABLE! I was wondering about you and Bob and Little Mews the other day! Especially since I have a back yard full of feral kittens and have NO CLUE what to do. All the area rescues seem to be full and they all expect me to bring them in the house to foster them. I simply can't do that. I'm out of room for rescuing cats. It's distressing and stressful. I can't imagine doing this all the time. You are good people times elebenty!

Sorry to hear about the diabeetus. :-( I'm going to be looking at that myself if I don't get serious about cleaning up my eating habits. Total suckage. I hope they find a med that works for you soon and you get back to 100% kitten saving RAWR!!! power soon.

img.fark.net

I found this driving home from work, one day..sitting in the roadside trash..  I have always loved these and never had one..  I stopped, retrieved it..and went all "shiat"..  All the ballasts are at the bottom..  This thing *is* broken..  But, for whatever reason, I took it home anyways..

That was the day I learned exactly what this device is all about..  =)

It was mid-August when I found it, ~8:30am in the direct light of the rising sun..  I don't know iff'n you can read that top medallion, but it says "82"..  Nonono..was already so much hotter..poor thing was maxed out..and stabilized after a day, once brought home..

It's range is 69 - 83 degrees Fahrenheit.. When the first ballast (the one with the "70" medallion) is at the top of the pipe, it is 69 degrees or colder..

When the last/top ballast (the one with the "82" medallion) is at the bottom of the pipe, it is 83 degrees or hotter..

All others..well..if they float in the middle of the pipe..their medallion is the temp..if there is nothing in the middle, the temp is the diff between the last at the top and the first at the bottom..

Beautiful, practical, elegant..and, after almost two years of monitoring..proven accurate to less than one-half degree..

Set yer smartphone down and think a bit..  Folks a couple hundred years ago really *did* have their shiate t'gether..and the brains to run with..  =D

Good luck with that! We have had problems with the hellions around here since we moved to this rural ghetto. Cops are worthless, dealing with parents who claim that their spawn are innocent is a joke.

A strong trap would be perfect!

I have the little shaits on video and the cops do nothing. Being rural I would go with the rock salt in the 12 ga. Like I said upthread, I'm going with the paintball gun. Hurts like hell and leaves a mark for the cops and parents to see. The thing is, I could come to your neck of the woods and deal with the problem and go home the next day, nobody saw anything, nothing to investigate. Not so easy for either of us to do on our home turf.

Sounds a bit like "Strangers on a Train" meets Caturday.  This could wind up being a really good story, or a really good trial.

I'm sure we'd all alibi you.  Family and all that...

Blueberry Buckle

You fell into the same trap I did - it still requires a log-in. The lovely blueberry cake is still beyond our grasp...

Story of my life recently.
I think I'll go eat worms.

I can log in to Cooks Illustrated. Hopefully this will work:

BLUEBERRY BUCKLE
MAKES ONE 9-INCH CAKE, SERVING 8 TO 10
A blueberry buckle is a blueberry coffeecake with a streusel topping. The batter will be extremely thick and heavy, and some effort will be required to spread it into the prepared cake pan. This buckle is best made with fresh blueberries, not frozen ones, which are too moist. If you'd like to serve the buckle as dessert, consider a vanilla ice cream or whipped cream accompaniment (see related recipe for Cream Cheese Whipped Cream). Leftovers can be wrapped in plastic and stored at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Streusel
1/2
cup unbleached all-purpose flour (2 1/2 ounces)
1/2cup packed light brown sugar (3 1/2 ounces)
2tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4teaspoon ground cinnamon
pinch table salt
4tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick), cut into 8 pieces, softened but still cool
Cake
1 1/2
cups unbleached all-purpose flour ( 7 1/2 ounces)
1 1/2teaspoons baking powder
10tablespoons unsalted butter (1 1/4 stick), softened but still cool
2/3cup granulated sugar (about 4 3/4 ounces)
1/2teaspoon table salt
1/2teaspoon grated lemon zest
1 1/2teaspoons vanilla extract
2large eggs, room temperature
4cups fresh blueberries (about 20 ounces), picked over
INSTRUCTIONS
For the streusel: In standing mixer fitted with flat beater, combine flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt on low speed until well combined and no large brown sugar lumps remain, about 45 seconds. Add butter and mix on low until mixture resembles wet sand and no large butter pieces remain, about 2 1/2 minutes. Transfer streusel to small bowl and set aside.
For the cake: Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position; heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9-inch round cake pan with 2- inch sides with nonstick cooking spray, line bottom with parchment or waxed paper round, and spray round; dust pan with flour and knock out excess.
Whisk flour and baking powder in small bowl to combine; set aside. In standing mixer fitted with flat beater, cream butter, sugar, salt, and lemon zest at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes; using rubber spatula, scrape down bowl. Beat in vanilla until combined, about 30 seconds. With mixer running at medium speed, add eggs one at a time; beat until partially incorporated, then scrape down bowl and continue to beat until fully incorporated (mixture will appear broken). With mixer running on low speed, gradually add flour mixture; beat until flour is almost fully incorporated, about 20 seconds. Disengage bowl from mixer; stir batter with rubber spatula, scraping bottom and sides of bowl, until no flour pockets remain and batter is homogenous; batter will be very heavy and thick. Using rubber spatula, gently fold in blueberries until evenly distributed.
Transfer batter to prepared pan; with rubber spatula, using a pushing motion, spread batter evenly to pan edges and smooth surface. Squeeze handful of streusel in hand to form large cohesive clump; break up clump with fingers and sprinkle streusel evenly over batter. Repeat with remaining streusel. Bake until deep golden brown and toothpick or wooden skewer inserted into center of cake comes out clean, about 55 minutes. Cool on wire rack 15 to 20 minutes (cake will fall slightly as it cools).
Run paring knife around sides of cake to loosen. Place upside-down plate (do not use plate or platter on which you plan to serve the cake) on top of cake pan; invert cake to remove from pan, lift off cake pan, then peel off and discard parchment. Re-invert cake onto serving platter. Cool until just warm or to room temperature, at least 1 hour. Cut into wedges and serve.

I like that.... public shaming is a good method.....

I've considered that, but getting good pictures in the dark and catching the jerks in the act have proven difficult at best. Enough of this, lets all post moar cats! On with caturday and (insert your favorite beverage here)!

Ah......the little vermin are still at it?  Anyway you can electrify the property to give them a liitle jolt without getting caught?  No?  How about a laser pointer?  Shoot it athem, and then yell "BOOM"!!!!  Would they get the message?  Oh dear.....I am starting to sound like a vigilante....better go finish my beers, and go away.  :D

I'm going to get a paint ball gun and freeze the ammo, I've been told that it's very painful. They have no fear of the police so pain is the only thing I have left.

Drink a glass of ice water after every two beers, it will help cool you down and also keep you hydrated. Being dehydrated is what makes a hangover worse than it has to be.

They do two things of extreme interest. They drool like no ones business. Which is awesome. They are super-family oriented. And, they like to swim like no one's business. In fact, they have webbed front paws. (That's three things... shhhh, tell no one)

TGIC! I just got to catch up on the thread and I honestly can't remember whether I finished reading the one from last week... The kid and I went to the local Saturday market today (it's more than a farmers' market... takes up basically all of downtown.  We wandered around for a good hour and a half or two hours... something like that.  Ended up buying a huge bag of Yerba Mate and some nommy local honey.  Even handed out a few of our business cards! The kid is currently helping the guy set up the PA system in preparation for his gig tonight, which is why I was able to get caught up with this week so far.  Gotta get up stupid early tomorrow because the kid decided to volunteer to help out with the local marathon and the guy will be sacked out after the gig (not getting home until 2 am & unable to fall asleep for a few hours after doesn't bode well for him trying to be up around 8 am...)  I love having her here :)  Keeps me on my toes and doesn't allow me to wallow a whole lot with the pain stuff.

The cats are sleeping in their tree next to the open window.  As we live in the basement, it gets incredibly cold when the AC is running.  They like the open window and sunlight :)  Lars has even lost 2 lbs!!! The kid and guy weighed him this week.  We'd changed to an "indoor" food (Wellness CORE Indoor) in hopes that he'd lose a bit of the pudge.  He's being more active and the weight loss is great!  He's now about 18 lbs instead of a tad over 20.  He's a huge cat anyway, so all I'm hoping for is a decrease to around maybe 15 lbs...  Cassie weighs in at 13 and there's not an ounce of fat.  How did I end up with huge cats?!

Ok, I'll shut up now.  Here's an old cat pic or few to make up for all the words.  Glad sherpa is on the road!!! I wish he was going a bit more west than he is... I'd love to meet him!!

Hi, folks... just finished a needed nap... went to the brewery to do the lighting and wiring on the maintenance room, found that the idiot landscapers ignored instructions again..... they are putting sod in an area by the access to the back of the warehouse, and added dirt to raise the surface to equal that of the building... with the sod on top of that, one good rain would mean major flooding inside the building, and in my shop !  Got one of the owners out there yesterday and he told them to keep the level down... they ignored him, as they ignore me..  so I sent him a descriptive and rather ugly email , to the point, and got out the rake and shovel... the area is now where it should be, I moved 2 to 3 yards of dirt, rocks, gravel, etc. and made it ready for sod... the owner came by, was apologetic, still got an ear full of griping.... my cardiologist would have kicked my butt if he had seen me... but it had to get done.. then.... sod is going down Monday, and I will be there early to see that the company doesn't fudge it up again... told the owner that I was going to put in 8 hours OT for my work, due to them letting those fools get away with their shenanigans...
End of rant....

Glad Sherpa is on his way... he didn't unpack his gas mask, so he may be in trouble if QJ is into the hushpuppies again... winds are easterly, so fogged windshields and misfiring engines are a warning sign... think diesels are safe, though...

The Ice Queen: So here is my day in a nut shell.

Get home and see neighborhood slut cat jump out of basement window well. Go over and look and there are 2 kittens in there. Go to check them out, both under 1 weeks old. One is ok the other has a HUGE open wound where umbilical cord would be. I mean maggots and everything. So we get baby cleaned up some but by this time, mom is mad at me. Basically ignored them for the rest of the morning and early afternoon. So in the house they go. Clean up baby some more with some stuff we got at the store and well, it was just gross. Poor thing had to be miserable :( The good news is once we got all of the bugs out, the tissue itself looks healthy and doesn't look like it went through the peritoneum.

So since momma now wants nothing to do with babies, guess where they are. Yep. I love my life. They'll get looked at by vet tomorrow to make sure I got everything thing,

ProcrastinationStation: Just back in from blueberry harvest....  I got  4 POUNDS of blueberries!!

I think its time to learn how to make jam....

I acquired about 10 lbs today.

Place in large pot with just a bit of water but not much (2-3 inches at the bottom only - not all the way to cover the berries), bring to a boil, squash with potato masher (the old-fashioned metal kind, the plastic ones just skate over the top of the berries). Let cool. Strain thru a fine-screen strainer to get most of the skins out of the juice.

Strain again thru cheesecloth. You will be AMAZED at the amount of teeny-tiny seeds you strain out.

You now have pure blueberry juice. follow the directions on sure-jell or other pectin package re: sugaring and canning.

When I'm heating up the juice to follow the jam recipe, sometimes I add a couple of teaballs or a cheesecloth package of mulling spices (allspice, cinnamon, cloves) to make mulled blueberry jam. oh YUM, it's one of the most popular office gift exchange items ever.

Also, fill one jar with fresh, ripe blueberries. Cover with rum, vodka, or other adult beverage of choice. Put the jar in the fridge for a few days, then start enjoying berry bombs. The longer you leave 'em, the stronger they get... I have a quart jar of blackberries that's been marinating for over three years at this point and is only half-empty... each berry is like taking a shot.

Do not furget the pineapple chunks in real juice and coconut milk. You can freeze the pineapple chunks, save the juice and then toss together some kickin' Pina Coladas later with the juice and coconut milk, plenty of rum and then blended/thickened with the frozen pineapple chunks. I make mine super thick - like ice cream - and they are delicious. (I also add a bit of vanilla bean paste and a pinch of salt to mine to enhance the flavor).

And I sooooo fergot to say..

Orange has a Vet, now..!   =)

And, Bast be praised, got lucky again..!!

Let me explain..  I was trying to call the Vet I know..  That Vet is apparently the County Vet..  I ended up mistakenly calling the City Vet..  (not a bad thing)..  Seems that..well, let me play with numbers..  If you go to the County Vet, you pay a $50 visit fee, plus whatever else is needed (amount listed just fer explanation purposes)..  If you go back, you pay that same visit fee, plus whatever else is needed..  Over and over and over..

With the City Vet Hosp..you pay the visit fee the first time..  And that's it..  No other costs other than meds and treatment..  For one year..  After that year, you pay for *one* visit fee..and nothing fer another year of visits..

Orange goes in Sat, the 19th at 11:30am fer his intake and diagnoses visit..  My kitty finally has a doctor..!

Vet talked with me fer just over half-an-hour (I *like* this place) and basically said:  If Orange is eating and drinking normally (he is) and not complaining and using the litterbox (he is), don't worry..  Worry when he *stops* eating, et all..  We'll figger it out when he gets in here..  Oh, and btw..screw scheduling..if he takes a sudden turn fer the worse..get him here, STAT..!

I should add that, when he got up..demanding food and down from the bed..he was hobbling badly, again..  I'm really leaning towards fracture or mega-severe sprain that tightens up when he sleeps fer a long time..  Vet agreed was reasonable thought and sounded like not an illness..  *fingers crosssed*

Here's the little monster with a full belly..  ;)

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: exvaxman: Oh, a funny one I heard last night, I am a fan of BBC quiz and comedy shows. On a "News Quiz" story Andy Hamilton (one of my favorite comedians) was reading a newspaper clip. Apparently in anticipation of a new kitten being adopted, a "cat door" was installed so it could go outside when it wanted. The door opened up by a magnet attached to a collar.  The idea was immediatly given up when the kitten became attached to the fridge and could not break free.

I cringed in sympathy for the kitteh while ROFLMAOing at the same time.  Everyone i the library thinks... whatever 'cause they are even nuttier and noisier than I was just now!

While researching for the invention exchange, found out most auto pet doors require a RFID collar be worn by the pet to allow the door to work.  Figured it would be a real nice single-point failure item, so tried to come up with a way for the door sensor to recognize the pet in question based on pheromones, pet sound analysis, or specific urine recognition hardware (yes, I seriously considered making a door lock you have to pee on to unlock).  Couldn't think of anything in 5 minutes or less, so just went with the 'garage door within a garage door' schtick.

Looong week. For today,
crow202.org

Thursday, I saw a black cat near another condo building while walking to the bus stop. It got up and acted scared when I looked at it, but it didn't run and hide. It didn't want to come near me. Of course, I have a secret weapon in my work bag: A 3oz can of canned food. The cat got very interested when I brought the can out, and attacked the food with great relish. It was still too skittish to accept me being closer than 2 feet away.

I've seen this cat near the same place before--so it might be that this is someone's outside cat without a collar, or it might be that someone moved out recently and abandoned the cat. I put another can of food in my work bag, and will be taking the same route to work for the forseeable future so I can try to get this cat used to me and figure out whether it's a stray or is someone's. If the former, I've already got 1 black cat, so one more will fit in just fine....

I walked out on the deck and noticed Alice laying under the japanese maple.  Then I noticed what she was playing with.  I ran down the steps as fast as my gimpy leg would let me and snatched it away.  The only injury I could find was the little mark by its eye, so playtime must have been just beginning.  I had to run back up the steps and through the house (dodging my mom who freaked out about bringing a "wild" animal into the house) and out the front to release the little guy in the woods out front while Alice was still in the back.  Poor thing had a tick on its ear but I couldn't get it off, and figured I'd better let him go before he died of fright.

Meanwhile, I really was looking forward to being able to pet a cat again during my visit - however, up until a little while ago, I was feeling seriously unloved and was developing a complex. The one and only Biscuit wants nothing to do with me (although I did get a few blurry pics of him from a distance).

i415.photobucket.com

Mia keeps her distance, but I got a couple of pics of her as well. Wolf is the only one I have managed to actually touch, and it felt so good even after he basically flipped me off (ask yobbery if you don't believe me, the damn cat really did flip me off in no uncertain terms).

And as far as I'm concerned, Nate is a figment of their imagination, I'm convinced he does not exist  :o)

It's way too late for me to try and upload the pics I did get, I gotta go get some sleep and try and be ready to hit the road bright and early. I hope to be back soon with further updates (and pics).

You are a good friend looking out for our favorite irreplaceable Sherpa! It is not worth the risk driving when you are exhausted. We need our friend in one piece!

I definitely see a difference this evening. My wife even noticed. Cats too I think since they have finally made their presence known.

As of this evening...
Wolf: "I like this guy. I think I'll poke him in the face at 3:00am"
Mia: "I'll come within ten feet as long as you keep tossing treats at me"
Biscuit: "I'm scared Daddy"
Nathan: "Kill it with fire. Until then I'll be behind the washer"

We went out for a great Chinese dinner and then took in the Pittsburgh skyline.

Well, I fed all the kittehs and hoomins and cleaned the kitchen so now I'm exhausted. I've been giving Hisss! and her babbies gooshy fuds. The babbies still don't come anywhere near me, but because I take a whole (5 oz) can for the five of 'em and spread it across a big, white plate so they can all get to it, Hisss! gets super excited when she sees the plate. The babbies run under the propane grill and she runs TOWARD me. She doesn't even call her babbies, she just starts chowing it down. They come back after I go back in the house and eat their gooshy fuds, too and are sooooo cute in a little circle around the plate! I've got to clean the glass in that door extra well tomorrow and try and get a pic!

I mentioned last week about making and selling a Caturday t-shirt if anyone is interested. I spoke to Sherpa who suggested using the Caturday tag as a design. Here is the design - let me know if you are interested and/or want one.  If you don't like the design, feel free to suggest what you would like.  Thanks!

Do they come in 4xtra fat?

Oooo! That's my favorite size even when I'm skinny and a small/medium! Then you don't have to wear pants. YAY!!! Bet ya didn't think about that, didja?

Hahaha! Even my dinner has been raising hell today! I freaked out some guy at the grocery store when I was buying the roast to make my dinner (which I cut into steaks - I was saving money), freaked out Hisss! when I went out to her corner where she actually lives to grab some fresh rosemary for my dinner and touched one of her babbies and I just now freaked out Pearl the Grey when I was doing the final sear and set off the dinner bell/smoke alarm. I've heard my whole life how "everyone has a special gift". Well, mine seems to be freaking out other living creatures with little or no effort. I am strangely proud of that. MUAHAHAHA!

Also, my dinner was pretty darn good, so there's that, too.

That was me at the drive through bank teller yesterday! She commented on how well I was staying cool. I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw my hair was waving in the wind of my ac as I drove away and figured out how she knew! Lordy, still having blond moments at my age. White hair isn't as noticeable on a blond. ;D
Yes, I did have all of the vents aimed at me! I don't like 95 degrees.

Made my Credit Union happy earlier this week...went through the drive-through after shopping at Costco.
Teller admired the flat of nectarines sitting in passenger seat...so what does Captain Impulsive Behavior do but start passing fruit through the drawer (after ascertaining how many people were on duty right then).
Win/win situation...tellers all happy, and those nectarines were REALLY ripe.
I couldn't have eaten the whole flat by meself before they started going off.

Glad to see you in good hands (and paws) at long last! Hope the rest of your trip is easier....getting STARTED is often the hardest part.

YAY!!! Earl heard the crying Bub and started GLARING much harder than usual in my general direction. Gogh Beastie is indifferent to the cries of other cats getting baths (and is still only a tiny bit interested/unafraid of Earl). Too cute video!

CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED: HAPPY CATURDAY, EVERYFUZZY..!!!

Firstly, let me say, we finally have our  sherpa back..

*massive snip*

It's always nice to have a Sherpa, ain't it? ☺

As for Orange... holy fark, I'd have lost my mind if I were in your shoes. Probably would have robbed a gas station or ten, dropped cat and money off at the vet then turned myself in to the cops "sorry, blew it all on drugs. Yup" because DAMN.

As long as he's stable, I'd just keep him in the house no matter how much of a PITA he is about it until you *can* get him to the vet - or for a week or two as a precaution. DEFINITELY talk to the cat lady mail carrier and see if she has any ideas or knows of a kind hearted vet that will take payments from you in case he goes downhill again and needs to be seen right away. There's just so much that can be going on there and cats are very, very good at disguising pain and injuries. It's a survival thing. Then again, he may be just fine, but me being me, I'd have him at the vet as soon as I could anyway.

OK, I'm totally the wrong person to ask about this kind of thing. Not only was my schooling well over 20 years ago so I have forgotten damn near everything, but I am hypersensitive to critter injury. How I managed to stay calm when I actually had to treat injured animals, I do not know.

I know Orange has short hairs, but still give him a really good once over and check for puncture wounds. Rub his furs backwards and go over him inch by inch, even if you take a couple of puncture wounds yourself. He could have been bitten (like Gogh Beastie was) and you just can't see it through his fur. A nasty bite in the right area can make him act like his back is broken. Because I couldn't see Gogh Beastie's bite wound - it was just a very neat pair of punctures - I would have sworn his leg was broken. Critter bites are painful and the swelling around it can take a while to go down. Also, you know when you hurt yourself how it always feels even WORSE the next day or two than it did when you first got hurt? That may be why he acted like he was dying to death or had a broken spine or something. The receptionist at my vet told me her cat got bit by a skwerl (hehe!) and couldn't or wouldn't use the injured leg for over two weeks. Just get him in as soon as you can swing it and hope for the best in the meantime.

Geez. Totally got fingers, toes and paws crossed over here, as species-appropriate. Get better NOW, Orange! You hear me?!?

Cats do sometimes listen to me, you know.

BizarreMan: I hate to interrupt the cat love.  But am I the only one who thought the most interesting part of the story wasn't really discussed?  That the tenants who complain about the rats and the cats are in the middle of rent negotiations?

I would think that the tenants who complain are using the fact that there are rats in an effort to reduce the rent that they pay.  At least one tenant does not like seeing cats roaming the halls.

I thought a lot of things about that article were weird.  How do you know if a cat from a shelter knows how to hunt?  The movements are innate, but the skills need to be learned by a teacher, usually the mother cat, although I've had two hunters teach kittens we've adopted.

The doorman hired an exterminator to come out once a week as well as obtaining the cats.  Deceased rodents inside the walls imply the exterminator is using poisons rather than traps.  Rat poison could harm a cat that came into direct or indirect contact with the poison.  Deceased rodents in the walls are causing a secondary problem with excessive insect populations.  It just seems like either cats that are effective rat hunters alone, or combined with traps would be better all around than using poisons, especially if cats are used as well.

How long does it take to see if the rodent population is going down, staying about the same or going up?  Has the doorman checked to see if there are holes or other ways for new rats to get in from outside the building?  He probably can't block all of them, but every entry that is denied new rodents means less new rodents getting in the building.  Fewer new rodents combined with effectively eliminating existing rodents means population getting lower over time.  Any potential food sources that can be denied to rats means fewer will want to be in that particular territory.  Doesn't matter how as long as food is either unavailable or too dangerous to get at.

Mah mommy and mah stoopy head sismonster (and sismonster's boyfriend) went to the state fair. This means I can have WHATEVER I WANT for dinner tonight. Raley's/Bel Air has Angus Beef Top Sirloin on sale for $5.99/lb. but Sprouts has wild caught Sockeye Salmon on sale for $9.99/lb. I should just go to Food Maxx and see if they have anything that looks good. They are much cheaper. Also, I need to get more gooshy fuds if I'm going to make friends with Hisss! and her minions.

Oh man, I would be PISSED if I came home to this:

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Deathbymeteor: B's been busy climbing, which I think means her home is dryer than the hydrometer says.  Have to keep trying to add humidity for her, which is difficult when she lays out as long and as flat as she gets, just to make adding water a challenge.  But she's eating again, so it may just be another seasonal thing.

Now, being the typical "Eeeek! Spider!!!" *runs away dragging fainting couch behind her for later use* type, I am very unedjumakated about caring for spiders. Is there a reason it is harder to add water when she's like that? Are you not supposed to get the actual spider wet or what? Or is it you just don't want her attacking you?

I suppose that should have been "Dude, so do you mist water in there and let her lick or whatever it off any structures in the environment or does she have a little water dish type thingie?" I seriously don't know how that works because I would have died of horror by now. Good on you for caring for Miss B, btw.

[i.chzbgr.com image 500x312]

Both, but she doesn't lick it off or drink water normally.  She gets all her water from food.  But because she's not very tall (maybe 3.5 inches when she raises up as tall as possible) she tends to run away when water touches her (she's covered in fine hairs for sensing, like kitteh whiskers).  So she tends to head to high ground even if only a small droplet lands on her.  Otoh, if she sees water pouring into her home (usually when I add it to her dish), she has a tendency to start to attack it, since she sees a reflection, which means "another spider in my house, get it!"  Then she inevitably touches the water, realizes that it is water, and skitters away worried about the impending flood (I guess, her thoughts aren't so obvious).  She's pretty laid back, the epitome of "oh you're here and you're leaving me alone to my devices?  Good"

She's my bug, and she's my rescued critter.  Can't have kittehs in current apartment, will make sure they are allowed in the next one.

I am currently sitting on yobbery's back deck, enjoying the evening and catching up on Caturday.

Sherpa, you are not going to believe what I found at the Army/Navy Surplus store yesterday!
Did you know that they have Dehydrated/Freeze Dried Hushpuppies????
Just add a little water and they self-inflate!
Then after you eat them, they inflate some more.

They're better than that freeze dried astronaut ice cream they used to sell in the 70's.
Not a lot, but a little better.
Speaking of good eatin'...

Still in learning mode with the new camera so the picture isn't so great, but here are all three together and no one is hissing or growling and there's no fur flying. This doesn't happen very often - in fact almost never! It helps that Lucy, the peace keeper, is between Juno and Morticia, the mortal enemies.

I guess I'll post vacation pics while I wait for Earl's story to unfold, here's a couple from today. We kayaked out to my high school buddy's campsite, then paddled around Forked Lake.

It's Fuller the Wonder Dog! He sat calmly in the canoe while his people paddled him all around!
