BizarreMan: I hate to interrupt the cat love.  But am I the only one who thought the most interesting part of the story wasn't really discussed?  That the tenants who complain about the rats and the cats are in the middle of rent negotiations?

Nope, you are not the only one. When they were "but the rats!" in one breath and "but the cats!" in the next I thought "PICK ONE TO LOVE, CAST YOUR VOTE THUSLY THEN STFU OR MOVE. Oh and rent is X amount, end of story." Duh.

Kinda reminded me of this one place I lived at in Monrovia about 25 years ago where there was a bug problem, but it was limited to outside unless you were a total pig. They were big-ass bugs that seemed to only come out in force at night, too. The woman next to me and the woman upstairs from me (BFFs - their "men" were both drug dealers in the same gang) were whining about the bugs AND the pesticides and how the spray was just making the bugs go in their homes. I told them I'd never seen bugs in my apartment and one of them says "If you had kids you'd see them bugs because you wouldn't be able to keep your place all like you was waitin for Robin Leech". She seriously said that to me and I had said NOTHING about her being a slob. I told her I did have a kid, but since I actually put clothes on him before letting him outside and had taught him that standing in the middle of the breezeway and screaming at the top of his lungs when he didn't get his way or knocking on strangers' doors to ask for candy or chips were inappropriate behaviors, perhaps she had mistaken him for a very short adult. "you know, he's got manners and shiat". That seemed to upset them quite a bit, because they both threatened me and yelled and stuff while I just did a white trashy *not impressed look* and "um-hmmm" *mocking head bob* at them until they went away. PROBLEM SOLVED - and all it took was a massively biatchy attitude and a complete lack of empathy and compassion on my part. 'Cuz really, it's wasted on some people anyway (the empathy and compassion, not the massively biatchy attitude). Like those dorks in NY and their "no cats or rats" stance, most likely over nothing more than the rent - which is understandable if they're going for leverage, but you really need to decide how stupid you want to look if you complain about both problem and solution and then try and act like you deserve an accommodation of any kind. I'd "um-hmmm" at them and remind them there are always people looking for a place to rent in NY. This ain't East Berlin. You may leave at any time.

That in Monrovia one of the better places I lived on my own before moving up here to NorCal, btw. I miss Los Angeles sometimes. I miss it a LOT sometimes and I've been up in SacTown for over 20 years now.

Here you guise, have a cat to make up for another of my weird stories.

Pic war nice, but not needed to make up for stories.  One of the reason I come to Caturday is to see what other folks are up to.  Also, to commisaryate with others over problems.  A problem shared is a problem solved (or at least reduced).  I pleasure shared is a pleasure amplified.

Here, have a pleasure cat...

Mah mommy and mah stoopy head sismonster (and sismonster's boyfriend) went to the state fair. This means I can have WHATEVER I WANT for dinner tonight. Raley's/Bel Air has Angus Beef Top Sirloin on sale for $5.99/lb. but Sprouts has wild caught Sockeye Salmon on sale for $9.99/lb. I should just go to Food Maxx and see if they have anything that looks good. They are much cheaper. Also, I need to get more gooshy fuds if I'm going to make friends with Hisss! and her minions.

Oh man, I would be PISSED if I came home to this:

Especially since the dog is clearly pleased with its work. Bad Goggeh! Naughty! *squeeee!* Such cute face! gah! BAD!!! I couldn't stay mad at that face, even if I wanted to really, really badly. lol!

I'm going to go hunt my dinner in the wilds of the aisles of grocery stores, like a proper middle aged female suburbanite. Now I'm thinking I want a Grilled Portabella Mushroom. Maybe stuff it. There should be herbed cheese of some sort involved. Or maybe I could do a steak with a mushroom and caramelized onion stopping and simply add the flavors I would have used for the mushroom stuffing in it as well. I do not know, but I will go find out before too many people get off work and get all the good stuff.

HAPPY CATURDAY, EVERYFUZZY..!!!

Firstly, let me say, we finally have our  sherpa back..I'm not the *least* bit worried 'bout a KiloKat this Caturday weekend and won't even peep about it..  (..less'n I go with a specific themed one in honor of..  =D  )

Enjoy your weekend,  JB41..!

Congrats on progress and feel better,  vudutek..!

So glad to hear everything seemed t'go smoothly,  RWDA..  =)

Good luck with B,  DeathbyMeteor..she'll 'drink' when she's ready..  My Kate (way diff species, I know, but still..) gets like that from time to time..

And, speaking of  DbM..

Deathbymeteor: So we've had Sherpa rejoin the party (yay!), Earl become Pearl (but still Earl, also yay!), and someone didn't get skunked (triple yay!).  Seems like a good week thus far.

I've only caught up to ~9:30AM, this morn..don't know what's been posted in the past three hours..but I may, kind'a-sort'a-I dunno way..halt the run of that "thus far" qualifier..  At this point, I's really not sure..  =/

*** WARNING!  WARNING!  "NIAGARA FALLS-CLASS" WATERFALL OF TEXT AHEAD!  SCROLL NOW, SCROLL FAST, TO AVOID..!!! ***

Last Caturday I posted 'bout how Orange hadn't been home fer a couple days around the 4th..then how he did finally come back, but with a pronounced limp..and, after checking fer breaks and injury, I concluded he'd somehow been hit or fell or something similar, was acting fine, ate fine, made no pain noises, etc..and that he was just all sore and would shake it off in a few days..

He spent the next couple days exclusively in-house..almost entirely in my room..slept on my bed, slept with me when I slept, ate/behaved normal..limp wasn't getting any worse..but couldn't tell iff'n it was getting any better..  Then, he decided he felt okay enuff..went downstairs and out..  And I didn't see him for *another* day..    >.<

So now it's Thurs morn and I've just got home from work..  I go up and hunt for the light-switch ('member, I work 12-hour overnights..my room is absotively *sealed* off from light..) and hear a tiny 'mew' from in front of me..

Get the light on and Orange is lyin' on the floor next to my bed..not *on* the bed, or my chair, where he'd normally be..but the floor..  That doesn't register, as I'm just happy t'see my little warrior back up here..  Then he tries to get up to come to me and his hindquarters go full sideways..  He makes a second effort and stands..then a third and stumble-drags his way over to me..

My jaw is on the floor in shock/fear/pain as I bend down to pet him..carefully..   He still shows no signs of pain..just is only barely able to 'walk'..

I think of the day he's been gone (ridiculously strong (for here) thunderstorms) and what it must have taken to get up the stairs and down the hall in his condition..and go right for the last can of food I have for him..  Put it down in his bowl, customary place, and he makes it the few feet and dives right in (still no pain complaints)..finishes it all, then tucks himself up..Sphinx-like..on the carpet edge like there's not a single thing wrong in the world..

Well, I have several immediate thoughts about the change..and not a d@mn one of them good..  My brain ran through renal failure, liver failure, Feline Leukemia, Feline Urinary Tract Disorder, Severe Constipation/Blockage..  I've lost two cats..one to #1 and one to #2..and almost lost one to #4..

In my experience, #'s 1 and 2 are fast..hours to a day, at most..  Orange has been worsening, apparently, over the course of a week..so I move on..  #3 I know nothing about, not having had to deal with it, but I assume it is like human cancers and is a slow disease..also not the case here..  #4 I *know* is extremely painful..and Orange ain't complaining..I set that one aside..  By now, Orange has rolled over on his side and is grooming his front paws..and his a$$-end is towards me..  I go over and move his tail aside..and his starfish looks, in my dim lighting, *terribly* swollen and blackened..

Sunofabiatch..

I am already more than a half-hour past when I needed to be in bed fer work, that night..  I go back to the laptop and call up my trusted pet-med/Vet sites and start researching feline constipation..  I've been at this ~20 min when Orange gets up..manages to get to his litterbox, get in proper sitting position and leave a nice, healthy dump..

Well what the hell...

He's eating fine..he's not in obvious pain, is behaving as normally as possible..definitely not constipated..only problem is his back hips/legs..

Have no choice at this point..can't miss day's work, can't risk a write-up (diff story)..NEED to sleep..   I gently pick Orange up and place him on my bed to sleep with me..  He looks up at me, drags himself off the bed and manages to make it out my door and into the hall..and then *MEOWS*..!

Now, the upstairs is comprised of three rooms:  mine, finished and furnished..there's a storage room of equal size and opposite mine..and a verra large main room that used to be HM's son's room..'til he carved himself out a corner downstairs of the winter past..  That last room is a disaster-land that is boy's responsibility to clean (HAH..!)..but has nice big windows and soft comfy spots, ie - mattress, removable back of recliner chair and piles of clothing..and Orange claimed it as refuge quite some time ago..  Problem is, those other rooms are gated off to keep the dogs from intruding..but Orange could always jump the gate, no prob..  Until now..

I go to the hall..  Orange is looking at the gate..looks at me..back at the gate..mews..

I think "H3ll..he's going to ground.."..  =(

I wedge open the 'door' and he gets himself onto the mattress and curls up..I can hear his purr..

With a simple prayer to the Mistress, I go to bed..  Mind you, now..by the time I crawled into the sheets, I'd been up 20+ hours..on 5.5 hours sleep..and worked a 12-hour factory shift..came home..and have now, as of typing this, been awake another 20+ hours and still going..  =P

I wake up to alarms, get ready and go down to leave fer work..looking in on Orange, he's sitting up..rather, lying, with head and ears up..alert..and has moved, tho' only a foot or two..  Is gunna have to be good enuff for me, for now..  :/

So I get to work, where I get to spend the bulk of the next half-day alone with my thoughts..and all revolve around the core problems/difficulties/issues..as now presented:

- I truly have no idea what the problem is..no visible injury..no obvious pain..apparent anal swelling/discoloration..rapid deterioration regarding use of hindquarters..no apparent mood/appetite change..and if I can do *anything* at all, I can't do it until I get home from work..16 hours after I last saw him and the start of my weekend..
- I truly cannot  afford to do anything..  When I left for work, I literally had $0.34 in my bank account..  Now, sometime around 4am last nite, my last week's paycheck hit my account..but, due to Holiday Plant shutdown, that paycheck is fer one 12-hour day and 8 hours Holiday pay..  Amount that hit the bank..?  $166.00  And $30 of that will come out t'day in an auto bill-pay fer debt repayment..so, I has'ta make $136 work fer a household of three, for a week..  Oh, and it costs me $10/day in gas to get to/from work..so take off another $30..and another $10-15 if I want to eat while working..now we're down to $91 fer the next five-six days fer everything/anything..food included..  Live paycheck-to-paycheck, atm..and this is gunna suck..even were Orange in perfect health..
- Only Vet I'm familiar with, out here, is yet another $10-gas 'round trip in the opposite direction, with a $50 office/visit fee..  Gunna try and catch our Mail Carrier (Local Cat-Lady I've mentioned afore, who lives all of a 2-min walk from my front door..) and ask who/what she uses fer any Vet services..mind, depends on when she gets home fer the day..can be late..and I won't be up *all* that much longer..

That all said, now I'm driving home..I've come up with no answers..I'm honestly sitting on the edge of "be better, or be over.."..  I've done this dance five times afore..and each of those I had much more resources available..  I literally have nothing to work with, now..  Be better or be beyond suffering..    Would rather have turned around and done another shift..and another..and another..than finish that drive..

..but, I do a *LOT* of shiate I hate..because I have to and it's what I do..  I get home..unload the car..my work stuff and some basics I picked up afore leaving town (further reducing available $$)..takes three trips..one fer my werk stuffs, one fer purchases (fragile..bouncing, happy, Black Labs..must be careful..heh..) and one fer non-fragile purchases..  Get everything inside and go out to check the mail..  I'm the *only* one who ever checks the mail..wait a month, and I'll find a month's worth in there..  So, grab the mail..walk back up on the porch..drop a letter and stoop to pick it up..

..and hear *Mew!*..

D@mn near fracture my spine bolting upright..  On my right is an overstuffed recliner..one the top of the backrest (his fave porch spot) is Orange..around/on the chair and between both of us are all sorts of building supplies..windows..whatever..  The only way up there was to *jump*..  And even that aside from the fact that he obviously came down to go out and spent the night outside..  *blinkblinks*

L'il bastard watched me go back-and-forth past him *three* times without saying a thing..!

I simply don't know what to think..  Orange looks at me and says *mew* again..then stands up (!)  jumps down to the arm of the chair (!) then jumps down to the deck (!)..   At this point, Young Lab comes to interfere, as usual, and Orange dashes (!) past him and bolts upstairs (!!)

I get things organized quickly and head up to my room..where Orange is waiting, yowling and nosing his food-dish around..    0_o

Okay, okay..!  =)

I get one of the cans o'food I got outt'a the bag (I honestly thought it might be that I'd be burying one with him, t'day..)..and he digs into it..  Finishes, comes over and curls up at my feet..he'd eyed my lap, but he and I both know how often he gets spaghetti-limp and just slides off..heh

All his movement to this point has been no worse than the first night I noticed the limp..arguably better, in fact..

I now took the opportunity to dig out an LED flashlight and approached the butt of the orange-one..and *immediately* realized that what I thought was a swollen anus was just his pushed-back (from the way he'd been laying) harbles..and the blackening/discoloration had just been dirt or mud from the recent storms (his harbs were now clean..but the darkened coloration was visible still on the upper base of the tail..no doubt..dirt..)..

Just afore I started catching up on the thread..and then, this post..he got up, walked to the back room (I really think he could've jumped the gate, iff'n it weren't still wedged open) and gone to curl up in a sunbeam on the recliner-back cushion..  That was, oh, four hours ago,,??  (I've been doing a lot between him, reading, posting, etc..etc..etc..  Is Friday..operative word "Day"..  I have a limited window to get things done on my one weekday off..  *lol*)

I took a pic of him earlier..included below..and he's still there..alert, comfortable, watching the world out the window..

I don't know what to think now..

Any of you know, have friends who are, or are a Vet yerself that would be willing to  gratis bounce some questions back'n'forth about what might be goin' on, here..?

I am *thrilled* he's here and better..regardless what room he chooses, atm..  I just want to know this bounce up isn't gunn'a be followed by another bounce down..rinse, repeat..  I can't even begin to do anything, Vet-wise, until next Fri (4-day (48+ hour) paycheck)..

Four-day work weeks are stressful/draining enuff, when things are going *well*..!

Gunna go back and look at the thread, catch up..get a couple things done up here, then crash..  Will try calling Orange..would like him up on the bed..but, won't try to hard..  Iff'n he's comfortable where he is, is better fer his healing/well-being..

Here's the pic I took..  That piece of wood by his butt is something he dragged up to play with..wasn't there an hour earlier..  Ignore any background mess/bleed-in..  I already said this was a teen's room..  Total disaster, if yer a hooman..  *LOL*

BizarreMan: I hate to interrupt the cat love.  But am I the only one who thought the most interesting part of the story wasn't really discussed?  That the tenants who complain about the rats and the cats are in the middle of rent negotiations?

I would think that the tenants who complain are using the fact that there are rats in an effort to reduce the rent that they pay.  At least one tenant does not like seeing cats roaming the halls.

I thought a lot of things about that article were weird.  How do you know if a cat from a shelter knows how to hunt?  The movements are innate, but the skills need to be learned by a teacher, usually the mother cat, although I've had two hunters teach kittens we've adopted.

The doorman hired an exterminator to come out once a week as well as obtaining the cats.  Deceased rodents inside the walls imply the exterminator is using poisons rather than traps.  Rat poison could harm a cat that came into direct or indirect contact with the poison.  Deceased rodents in the walls are causing a secondary problem with excessive insect populations.  It just seems like either cats that are effective rat hunters alone, or combined with traps would be better all around than using poisons, especially if cats are used as well.

How long does it take to see if the rodent population is going down, staying about the same or going up?  Has the doorman checked to see if there are holes or other ways for new rats to get in from outside the building?  He probably can't block all of them, but every entry that is denied new rodents means less new rodents getting in the building.  Fewer new rodents combined with effectively eliminating existing rodents means population getting lower over time.  Any potential food sources that can be denied to rats means fewer will want to be in that particular territory.  Doesn't matter how as long as food is either unavailable or too dangerous to get at.

Timid Goddess: I would think that the tenants who complain are using the fact that there are rats in an effort to reduce the rent that they pay. At least one tenant does not like seeing cats roaming the halls.

I would lay money that the complainers want a rent reduction, or at least not as large an increase.  As far as cats roaming the halls.  It would only really be an issue if someone living in the building has cat allergies.  Seems that would be a better angle to take if you're wanting to be a hard-ass about negotiations.

CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED: HAPPY CATURDAY, EVERYFUZZY..!!!

Firstly, let me say, we finally have our  sherpa back..

*massive snip*

It's always nice to have a Sherpa, ain't it? ☺

As for Orange... holy fark, I'd have lost my mind if I were in your shoes. Probably would have robbed a gas station or ten, dropped cat and money off at the vet then turned myself in to the cops "sorry, blew it all on drugs. Yup" because DAMN.

As long as he's stable, I'd just keep him in the house no matter how much of a PITA he is about it until you *can* get him to the vet - or for a week or two as a precaution. DEFINITELY talk to the cat lady mail carrier and see if she has any ideas or knows of a kind hearted vet that will take payments from you in case he goes downhill again and needs to be seen right away. There's just so much that can be going on there and cats are very, very good at disguising pain and injuries. It's a survival thing. Then again, he may be just fine, but me being me, I'd have him at the vet as soon as I could anyway.

OK, I'm totally the wrong person to ask about this kind of thing. Not only was my schooling well over 20 years ago so I have forgotten damn near everything, but I am hypersensitive to critter injury. How I managed to stay calm when I actually had to treat injured animals, I do not know.

I know Orange has short hairs, but still give him a really good once over and check for puncture wounds. Rub his furs backwards and go over him inch by inch, even if you take a couple of puncture wounds yourself. He could have been bitten (like Gogh Beastie was) and you just can't see it through his fur. A nasty bite in the right area can make him act like his back is broken. Because I couldn't see Gogh Beastie's bite wound - it was just a very neat pair of punctures - I would have sworn his leg was broken. Critter bites are painful and the swelling around it can take a while to go down. Also, you know when you hurt yourself how it always feels even WORSE the next day or two than it did when you first got hurt? That may be why he acted like he was dying to death or had a broken spine or something. The receptionist at my vet told me her cat got bit by a skwerl (hehe!) and couldn't or wouldn't use the injured leg for over two weeks. Just get him in as soon as you can swing it and hope for the best in the meantime.

Geez. Totally got fingers, toes and paws crossed over here, as species-appropriate. Get better NOW, Orange! You hear me?!?

Cats do sometimes listen to me, you know.
