Germany will be the favorite going into the game, but Argentina can win this.  An early goal scored, allowing them to park the bus, or a late winner scored, allowing them to saint Messi before injury time is finished, is possible.  I wouldn't bet money on it, but Argentina can win it.

Subby is underestimating the Argentinian defense, which has played wonderfully organized, stout defense for the past two games, and is going to be going up against a Germany squad who only managed to score one goal on the United States.

More like 'only bothered'. They didn't need that win, they didn't want to hurt anyone, and the US didn't have to have a win. They played us about 70%.

To be fair Argentina cannot play any worse than Brazil did against Germany. Or will not quit like Brazil did. Yea after the third goal Brazil was probably not going to win that game but they seemed like they didn't even play for honor. Even Portugal only gave up four goals to Germany.

Argentina has a great shot at it, having the best player on the field.  Their defense is unappreciated and Germany's is not that great.

Watch out for German set pieces, especially corners.

They tied Ghana... I am sure they wanted to win that one. Barely beat Algeria. Barely beat France (kind of). I think a team with a decent defense can beat them, especially if that team has the best player on the field.

Germany has been switching back and forth between amazing (Portugal, Brazil), solid without ever being in much danger of losing (USA, France), and mediocre (Ghana, Algeria).

We'll see which German squad shows up.

So basically the more seriously the opponent needs to be taken in the first place, the better Germany plays them? In that case, Argentina is screwed.

This year's US side has been accused of many things, but...'rock solid defense' isn't one of them. Tim Howard's heroics notwithstanding.

Yeah you are correct about the US not having a great defense but we are disciplined (way more than Brazil, I know, it sounds crazy), so we could actually park the bus. Argentina showed today they can be disciplined. Let's see if they can do that with Germany.

I don't watch sports at all but just wanted to post this somewhere.

Earlier tonight I went to pick up a coffee table from some guy on craigslist.  I get to his house and stand outside intermittently tapping on the door for about 5 minutes.  Inside I hear some crazy yelling and think, oh shiat I've arrived in the middle of some kind of domestic disturbance.  He finally comes to the door and invites me in and tells me to hold on for a minute.  It's in the last minutes of this evening's game and he's watching Argentina in the final shootout, they score and he proceeds to go apeshiat once again, slaps me on the back and has the hugest grin on his face.  Turns out he's from Argentina and was understandably excited about the whole thing.

Yes but here is a truth. The German's have scored goals in every game they have played. Every game. That is not something that Argentina can say. No one has held Germany goalless and remember that the USA did nothing but play defense against them. So it figures that Argentina can't bank on going to penalties--they have to score.. I do think Argentia can win but that have to get an early lead and force Germany into concessions. If Germany gets the first goal, it's light out. Argentina simply does not have the weapons to get into a goalfest with the Germans

I just hope it's like the 86 final (with lots of action and goals) and not like 90 (dull parked Argentine bus and a lone pk).

germany only need to score 2 goals to win it, or bare minimum 1 goal to keep themselves in the game

argentina is stout defensively but have also had issues attacking these last few games, as good as messi is the netherlands made him invisible, germany has more strikers so taking muller out doesn't necessarily change things that much for them whey they do attack

maybe messi plays out of his mind, that would make things more interesting

I don't know how anybody can say this.

Argentina outplayed the dutch in the first half, not even close.  The 2nd half was pretty even and so was extra time save for the last minute.

Argentina had way more top-level chances in the match.. a missed header and kick from a cross by Higuain, Garay on the header on a corner, Palacio had a great chance late, Messi had a strong free kick.
The Dutch had some possession in the area, but never got a strike from a corner, never hit the goal on a free kick.. Romero didn't have to do much but punch a couple of corners most of the match.

Disappear, Argentina.

MugzyBrown: don't know how anybody can say this

I guess what I mean is by way of possession.  Much like they did in the Mexico game.  They possessed the ball endlessly, but seemed incapable of making attacks inside the 18.  They had little trouble with Messi, and used only one defender on him most of the time.

Argentina definitely had better quality chances, but they were few and far between.

/and to be fair, I had to drive my daughter to driving school during part of the game....
