If you want to smoke pot on the job become a software engineer.

But Cuomo told me that prohibiting smokeable marijuana would keep weed out of the wrong hands...

Why in the world couldn't they smoke on the beach?

I very much doubt that an on duty lifeguard being baked would be anything noticeable to the average observer. I've seen lifeguards who are more interested in their cell phones that pose more of a danger than somebody who may suffer an overly paranoid side effect from using pot.

Dunno about that beach, but there's a 100 foot perimeter here so you gotta swim out beyond the breakers: http://newportbeach.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/newport - beach-city-council-extends-no-smoking-zone

If you've got a problem with that sort of thing, I'd suggest you stay off of Hawaiian beaches subby.

smoking pot on duty at Rockaway Beach on a rainy Fourth of July.

It was pissing rain all day and no one was allowed in the water because of the rip currents.  Not exactly the scandal of the century.

Lifeguards smoking pot is clearly a dog bites man story.  You should instead go look for the more interesting man bites dog story by finding the two or three lifeguards in the US who aren't smoking pot.

The lifeguard performance enhancing drug that allows you to be entertained by simply watching people in the ocean should be banned!

Same here. Ive known quite a few of them from living on the beach.

As much as I am an advocate of the whole legalizing thing, this was pretty stupid.

I know that being a lifegaurd is boring as dirt.  I know they sit there for hours on end with nothing to do.  But that's not the actual job.  The job is to BE READY when you are needed!  If your reaction time is delayed it could literally mean someone dies.

So, in that respect, smoke all you want.  But do it AFTER work.

Jerk.

When did they start releasing names of minors for pot offenses? Or am I making this up in my mind? Did they always snitch release the names of 17 year olds?

it's not the same, smoking weed is more like putting on clothes right out of the dryer on a cold morning.

Some lifeguards are the quiet type.

If they really gave a shiat about safety and protecting swimmers they wouldn't be hiring HS kids. The ages of those busted were 17 - 19. So clearly they are looking for the most qualified life savers and not the cheapest bodies to fill the posts.

I was a guard for 5 summers, including 2 on Fla beaches. I never got high before or during work. And nobody I worked with did either. AFAIK. We got high plenty after work.

Can you imagine a bigger buzz kill than some dead kid that it was your responsibility to watch and keep safe?  Fark, that's a nightmare, you've got to be a special kind of stupid to expose yourself to that risk.

I used to be a lifeguard, until some blue kid got me fired.

I don't even consider them real unless they protect their nose with a thick layer of colored Zinc.

Or the opposite could be true, in that the person on duty (much to my point) is very aware there is someone about to drown and jumps in trying to save some kid playing "marco polo". I tend to believe that a stoner would likely err on the side of caution in the role of lifeguard.

Honestly, it sounds like you've never gotten high before.
