Shame Tina Fey doesn't get the credit she deserves for this headline.

The USCG is out there regularly.  Back in the Cold War we used to invade each other's island for shiats and grins.

That's where I go to shoot moose from a helicopter.

Good. They should send Sarah Palin there to live permanently.

Hmmm. Assuming these native islanders were inhabiting the island before the advent of reliable helicopter service, why is this being subsidized? Maybe it's racist of me to ask.

2014-07-09 04:37:07 PM
OT1H, move. Why are my taxes subsidizing your patently-failing efforts to prove how rugged and self-sufficient you are.

OTOH, tfa slightly implies this is largely a native community. Since Whitey pretty much kicked you off your own lands and forced you to resettle in the butt-end of nowhere... would you like anything to drink, or a packet of crackers, during your flight?

Ah hell. With the various Pacific nations contesting ownership of various islands, it's probably best that we keep a permanent community there anyway.

Do the residents have to pay for this service? If not, then why the hell do I have to pay for public transportation in Chicago. Damn Red State Socialists.

/why isn't this on the Politics tab?

Is that what it takes nowadays to get the government to leave you alone?

They had this on an episode of Flying Wild.  Apparently you have to line your airport up with their runway juuuust right or you get a visit from some MIGs.

How about living where the roads are ?

2014-07-09 04:47:55 PM
We waste billions a year on stupid shiat. I'm fine with choppering  Eskimos off a rock a few times a year.

/dude I don't think that's the proper nomenclature

2014-07-09 04:49:43 PM
The U.S. DOT and Alaska Legislature have already signed off on splitting the helicopter service's $377,520 price tag, with the federal government

So, who's paying the other half? It's not the Koch brothers, it's the 99% bill.

I know that place.  The pyramid behind it has a cockroach-headed alien queen in the basement.  Every 100 years or so, some scorpion-faced dude shows up and goes hunting.  We lose a couple of "tourists" in the process, but the hunter is pretty cool to us.  Always stays at the local motel, drops a BUNCH of cash (all in gold ingots) on the local mom & pop stores.  Doesn't handle his liquor well, though.  He always gets hammered at the "Ice-Is" stripbar and has to be hauled out by the tribal police.  Then, while he's sleeping it off in the cell, we all have fun shooting his shoulder-mounted ray gun thingy at the icebergs.  I seen one 'berg about a mile wide get cut clean in half with one of those things.

I suspect that the government funds this little outpost in order to maintain a US presence.  Otherwise the Russians might just land on it one day and take it for themselves.

The Russians are more efficient/blunt about the whole thing...........get rid of the annoying civilians and just put a base there.

The fact that people live in these remote places is just fascinating to me.

I read the wiki page. It was interesting but full of holes. Apparently 135 people live on the island. Who are they and why the hell are they out there?

Hey now. Sure, we've had our differences with Russia over the years, but putting her in wink range is just mean.

Several hundred years ago, and not "you" or "your own", but "a few of your distant ancestors'". All this "heritage" stuff does is gives people a way of whining about injustice and oppression without actually having to face injustice or oppression.

Why the hell is the federal government subsidizing it when Alaska pays its citizens an annual subsidy from oil money?

By all means remember it, learn from it, and do not allow it to happen again. But do not use it to justify special treatment for people who aren't affected by it.

Okay, perhaps I'm missing something here, and excuse me if I am.... but... If this town is part of Alaska, you wouldn't *need* to fly back to the mainland to be in the US.

You can likely drive there during the winter, as they have a runway for small planes during the winter.  First heard of this place on Air Alaska when they flew a trip to the island.  Helicopter is only necessary during the warmer months.  Both of them, July and August.

I like how everybody likes to pile on to Sarah Palin on Fark for making a few gaffs in her speeches, while giving a complete pass to what comes out of Joe Biden's mouth. Things like: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man." Or : "You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.... I'm not joking."

Devil's Playground: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

I wonder how often Obama trots out a word or phrase from that one when he's talking shop with Biden.

"Gee, Joe, would you say that my plan for dealing with ISIS is 'storybook?' Nice and mainstream? I sure hope so."

It's cute that you think it's the Natives that are in any way oppressed or discriminated against. The only place I am aware of in the US where it is ok to openly discriminate against a job applicant based on race, and that race is anything other than Native.
