They could have just taken it a mile away from the village and leave it there. Sure, it'll rampage all the way back, but you've still got a year to deal with it.

I've got a few snapping turtles (18-24" long) around my cottage.  Can get quite aggressive if you're trying to get them to do something they don't want to (like get off the farking road).

The fact that this cop's reactions were based on superstition actually puts this on far better footing than most American cops-shoot-animal stories.

Now I'm picturing the dad in Jeepers Creepers sitting in his barn with his harpoon-gun... waiting...waiting...

You gotta wait until it stops spinning and the head pops out to shoot it. Also, be careful when it turns red, that's when it starts going much faster.

Sad, and superstition probably played a heavy role.  I own a turtle and that lil farker moves fast (Red Eared Slider) both on land and by sea.  But tortoises?  Meh.  Rode on one that was over 100 years old when I was 4 at some zoo/theme park that I now don't recall the name of and it certainly didn't move fast.  But.  Tortoises and turtles are pretty aggressive and are intimidating as they are tanks.  Still, no reason to shoot it.  Once one of these guys figures out you have no food/suitable habitat, they will move on, but granted that could take weeks or months depending on the size and stubbornness of the critter.  Guy could've called over a couple of friends and used some rope and heavy leather gloves to remove it.  Kind of like removing a biting TV, but still...he could've tried at least.  Trick is how to grab a tortoise so that it can't bite you and how heavy it is to lift.  Still may get clawed and those claws can be nasty.

/haz a sad for this story
//my turtle Henry still tries to bite me every time I have to clean out his aquarium, and these are not love bites (never been bitten, FTW)
///not a dog, but hell, at least he doesn't pee on the couch or chew my shoes

I'm usually pretty good at jumping on its shell.

I live in a part of a country in a city where there aren't any turtles or tortoises and I don't have a great deal of terrapin experience overall.

That being said, I feel totally comfortable matching wits with only my bare hands against any turtle on earth.

LOL.  Matching wits, sure, turtles ain't smart but they do know who feeds 'em and will recognize them on a certain base level.  Just be careful.  I was so fearful of my 3 lb turtle that I used to use a pair of kitchen tongs to get him out of his tank.  Now that I've learned exactly how far he can bite, I just grab him far enough from the biting end and far enough from the scratching end.  Nope, not smart, but not entirely dumb, either.  Me or the turtle, take your pick :)

/and yes, yes I will be going to see the TMNT movie when it opens, thanks

Okay, if you're the chief of police and one of your cops calls to ask for a day off because he was afraid of a tortoise, give him the day off.  In fact, give him every day off.
