Let's first look at what kind of a day we had yesterday. Germany thrashing their opponents, the host-nation Brazil, 7-1 and breaking many records in the process.

Most goals scored by a team in the world cup (total): 224, breaking Brazil's 221 (I'm seeing this listed as 123 and 121 elsewhere, don't know which is correct...)
Fastest 5 goals scored by a team: 29 seconds
Biggest margin of defeat by a host nation: 6, doubling the previous record
Klose breaks the Brazilian held record of most goals by a single player in the Cup: 16
First time Brazil has trailed more than 3-0 in a World Cup
Brazil's worst loss ever (previously 6-0)
Quickest two goals by a single player: 69 seconds, Kroos
Biggest margin of victory over ANY semi-final match (previously Argentina 6-1 USA)
Most Goals in a semi-final match: 7
Most appearances in the final: 8

Okay, okay, time to focus on today's match. Let's look at how these two teams have done in the past.

Argentina were runners up in the very first World Cup in 1930, but did not show up again in the final until 1978 where they beat the Netherlands in extra time 3-1. Eight years later they beat the (West) Germans 3-2, but then lost to them the following year in 1990 and have yet to make a final since.

The Netherlands lost to (W) Germany in 1974, then to Argentina in 78, before forgetting how to play and losing to Spain in 2010.

Cool: What about this World Cup?

The Netherlands showed the world they meant business and wanted some revenge by winning their first match 5-1 over previous winners Spain. They then showed the world they had some weaknesses by having to come back against Australia, ending in a 3-2 win for the Netherlands, before putting two past Chile, insuring the top spot in their group. In the R16, Mexico looked like they would surely win, but a wonderful late equilizer by Sneijder in the 88th minute brought Oranje back into the game, and a penalty in the box against Arjen Robben in added time gave the Netherlands a penalty which gave them the lead and the win at the last second. They two failed to really look impressive against Costa Rica, having to go to penalties after a 0-0 game with extra time. They however were flawless in their shots, putting all 4 past, and with Costa Rica missing two, had no need for the 5th.

Argentina were in the Group of Ease, but you wouldn't have known it from how they played. While they won all of their matches against Bosnia, Nigeria, and Iran, they only did so by one goal. Against Bosnia it was Messi's goal and an early O.G by Bosnia that put them through 2-1, against Iran it was an added time 91st minute goal by Messi (1-0), and Messi scored two, with Rojo getting a third in a 3-2 win against Nigeria. In R16, Argentina needed 30 extra minutes to beat Switzerland, netting their one and only goal in the 118th minute, and only needed one (this time in the 8th minute) against Belgium.

So:

Argentina's reliance on Messi is huge. If Messi shows up and plays like he can, Argentina can certainly cause problems, but the Netherlands have many more offensive options. Both teams have the ability to impress, both teams have the ability to bore our shorts off. It really depends on which team shows up. I think at their best, the  Netherlands are the better team here, but they haven't played at their best since the first match, and they've just barely squeaked by since then. I'd love to see a GER NED final, and I am predicting a NED win, but I'm not feeling confident in that, this match is just too hard to call with how unpredictable each side has played as of late.

Good morning. In less than eight hours, players from here will join other Argentine who play in leagues around the world. And they will be launching the largest battle in the history of albiceleste-kind. "Albiceleste-kind". That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is 9 de julio and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from World Cup annihilation. We are fighting for our right to play Germany in the final. And should we win the day, the 9 de julio will no longer be known as an Argentine holiday, but as the day albiceleste supporters declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day! -President Cristina Kirchner

Given the events of yesterday, my prediction is that we see a scoreline similar to that of Superbowl XLVIII, with Netherlands winning 43-8.

JerseyTim: Hey, what time (ET) are these games going to be on on 2018? 4:00am, 7:00am, 11:00am?

Probably pretty early, I'd imagine, at least for those early group stage matches. Like "You sleepin homie" times. Moscow is 8 hours ahead of EST, I believe. So if they're holding a match at 12, 3, 6 and 9 for those four day matches, you'll be just getting lunch when that late night game begins.

Qatar would be pretty similar.

SI posted an article that mentioned the problem
"Four years from now the World Cup will be held in 11 cities across Russia. Host cities Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod are eight hours ahead of New York City, while Yekaterinburg is nine. So, for example, a match starting in Moscow at 3 p.m. would air at 4 a.m. in Los Angeles and 7 a.m. in New York. A 6 p.m. local kickoff in Nizhny Novgorod would start at 7 a.m. in L.A. and 10 a.m. in New York. Those are brutal start times for Fox Sports, and there is little chance Fox will average better viewership numbers than ESPN. Viewership will be lower and perhaps significantly so."

If it goes to penalties, I can't see Netherlands losing. They're one of the few teams that would make me worry if it came down to GER and them in penalties. They're no England.

I prefer Argentina, mainly because I would much rather have Messi drag their asses to a final, than Robben dive his way into one.

It's hard not to think Germany's blitzkrieg won't have an effect in this game though, psychologically.  I don't care how good your squad is, you have to be pretty intimated if you have to go against Germany right now.

Germany's official hate buddies are not the English, despite the English thinking it is. Germans couldn't give two shiats with the Englischers.

That's the final we ought to have, not Germany vs Messi+10.
