Someone just got paid to write an entire article about his own inability to understand the difference between "improved" and "perfect".

I think it was more the inability to understand the difference between "secure" and "able to house a whole bunch of children".

When did he say it was secured again? Oh, right. Never.

These are children, not people coming to take your jobs.  Kids don't make that kind of journey alone unless something is severely farked up at home.  It would be cruel to send them back.

We let them in and make them citizens.  Yes, that will encourage more to make the journey, but if kids feel they need to make a journey like that to feel safe we help them.  We are not barbarians.

Yes but illegal is illegal even if these children are refuges. We don't like their kind cause they'll vote aginst us.

Oh my god, he's a politician? When did this happen?

2014-07-09 09:39:01 AM
Of course there's no mention of the Republican operatives they hired to go into Central and South America to recruit children into making the trip.  They knew Obama wanted to get immigration reform done before he left office.  They'll use every dirty trick to make that doesn't happen.  It doesn't matter if those operatives are the ones who put those kids' lives and futures in danger -- the optics look back for Obama.

I don't understand.  It's not like these kids are wondering around the border states unattended.  They were scooped up by the border patrol and now we need to figure out what to do with them.

I realize that IBD is a bunch of drooling morons slamming their faces into their keyboards to write articles, but somehow they must know that when the border patrol scoops someone up they have to process them in the US.  We can't do it in Mexico since we don't own any of that.

you realize that there are many of these people who would like nothing more than vigilantes to be able to execute illegals on the spot right? and the rest of hawks would love to see heavy militarization of the mexican border, because big government is bad unless it's pointing guns at brown people.

Most problems can be solved by pointing guns at them.

My people came over during the Potato Famine. They faced discrimination- "Help wanted. No Irish need apply"- some of them even joined gangs. Now, their descendents are considered an essential piece of the American fabric, and if you don't believe me, go to a police station or firehouse in the Northeast.

Reopen Ellis Island. Let's get America back to what it used to be, a beacon of hope for the wretched refuse.

We are a beacon for hope. We take in more immigrants, legal and not, than any other country on Earth but we cannot take in everyone. A line has to be drawn.

Obama: Ok. Here's some ideas.

GOP: whoa there. Slow down, sparky. We can't just jump all over this. You need to think of a plan. Ideally, one that can't or won't take place until mid-November at the earliest.

Why?

Um, it's a 2008 act that mandates these kids to be held and evaluated for asylum.  Most of this money is going towards detention facilities and expanding the immigration courts to process them.  Unless Congress wants to repeal the act they passed which was signed by a Republican President STFU.

Except when we fuel the War on Drugs that results in the cartel warfare that drives people to send their children up here. Or we sell arms to countries we've embargoed in order to fund a militant junta in the region.

Pres. Obama: Okay, give me the funds I need to bring things to the level you want.

Now they wait to find out what he does next, so they can oppose it and declare the other option the correct one.

Like their own personal Dora the Explorer episode.

Except it's not a border security issue.

The kids are seeking out border patrol officers. Nobody is sneaking across the border.

The problem is that a law enacted during the Bush administration requires that the courts make sure kids aren't being sex trafficked before deporting them. There's such a backlog in the courts that it can take 2 years until the kids get to have their hearing, which allows them to stay in the country during that time. The parents of the kids see how long people get to stay in the country and think that it's a form of amnesty.

Not at all!  WWJD Repubs would build a fifty foot tall fence with barbed wire and guard dogs so that they don't HAVE to send any children back over the border in cattle cars, because they wouldn't survive the trip in the first place.  That's why this immigration problem belongs squarely to Obama, because they already told him what to do and which laws to ignore, and he decided to ignore different laws.

You do realize "more secure than ever" is not the same as "it's secured", right?

2014-07-09 12:19:18 PM
More reporting should be done on the Republicans, (especially House Republicans) stance on immigration reform.  A bill that the Senate passed a year ago has a ton of increased measures for border security and a whole bunch of other requirements that should make authoritarians ecstatic, but Boehner won't bring it up for a vote.  Meanwhile he complains that he doesn't "trust" the President to execute the laws already on the books when more people are being turned away or caught at the border than ever.  The House debate is being led by Steve "Cantaloupe Calves" King whose position is deport everything stamped Hecho en Mexico including the Dreamers and valedictorians just to be safe.  And yet when the President, after months of broadcasting that there is a problem and Congress needs to move or he will, takes executive action to prioritize the border situation by reallocating resources, Boehner threatens a farking lawsuit.  Interestingly enough, the lawsuit won't mention the immigration problem at all, but go back to taking a few more whacks at Obamacare.

The Republican stance and solution to this problem is either nonsensical or impractical or both at every examination.

But that danged liberal media refuses to confront them on this and everything else.  Stupefying.

Yeah, but savvy investors don't want to hear that this is Bush's fault - they want something on which they can blame Obama for the economic upturn.

There's also the little fact that the President has formally asked for the Congresses cooperation in reforming this law post haste,  and has been met with crickets.    Because the GOP aren't worried about borders, and they certainly aren't concerned about the well being of poor brown skin kids.   They're worried about milking this for all it's worth to turn out angry white bigots in November.
