I say we drop Perle and Wolfowitz straight into Baghdad to fix it.  And equip them only with wishes of good luck.

It will be like a reunion tour.  The Iraqis will be holding up lighters and chanting.

Only for reasons we are not generally accustomed to.

The US wanted to use that guy back in 2003, and the street protests (and subsequent media scrutiny) sank that boat. I don't see it playing out any differently today than it did the last time.

Nope, send them in raw SOF style. A ruck sack filled with ammo and one M16 from the worst national guard armory you can find.

They can live off the land.

That's an interesting idea, actually. Want to be the architects of a war? Fine. But after it's over, you have to live there for as long as the war ran. Among the people. No guards. No weapons. No armor.

Just the love and protection of the people you liberated.

/I'm sure 30 seconds of rationality would cause me to retract that but let me indulge.

There's an old saying in Iraq - I know it's in Iran, probably in Iraq - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again."

Also, now he's really pissed.

Chalabi is not a good option, but the real question is whether there are any good options at all. If not, then you go with the least bad option. Which might be Chalabi, or might not.

It reminds me of that line from Argo, "This is the best bad idea we have, sir."

2014-07-09 12:35:15 PM
I've said this before and I will say this again here:  Installing Chalabi as a US-friendly dictator to replace Saddam Hussein WAS the entire post war plan of Perle and Wolfowitz and the rest of the PNAC.   If you read stories from the time PNAC folks like Wolfowitz and Scooter Libby were head over heels smitten with Chalabi, calling him "The George Washington of Iraq" .  They really believed his "Iraqi national Congress was a vast underground resistance force operating in Iraq that was ready willing, and able to take over the country at a moment's notice.  And they Bought hook, line and Sinker, all the "defectors" he kept producing to provide "evidence" of Saddam's WMD program.

The CIA knew better,  the CIA knew Chalabi was full of shiat, a professional con man who had created the Enron-style collapse of Jordan;s second largest bank and nearly destroyed that country's economy.  They refused to credit anything he said or help him in any way.

But the Office of Special plans at the Pentagon overrode them (Doug Feith's office btw) and Bought Chalabi a mercenary army and put him on a plane to land just after US forces took the Capital.

That Photo op of Saddam's statue being pulled down?  That was staged for Chalbi's benefit.  Those are HIS mercs guarding the square it happened in.   It was supposed to be the signal for the Iraqi people to rise up as one and embrace thier beloved leader in exile and usher him into power.

It didn't happen because Nobody in Iraq knew who the fark Chalabi was, he hadn't been there in nearly 25 years and and his INC was a figment of his own imagination not an active resistance group.

That's why we appeared to be so clueless when Baghdad fell and appeared to have no plan for what to do next.  Because the plan they DID actually have fizzled spectacularly and they didn't want to admit it.  It's also why they never anticipate the sectarian warfare that followed the invasion.   When Chalabi had lived in iraq, those divide had not been so pronounced, Saddam deliberately ratcheted up ethnic hatred to stay in power after the first gulf war, something Chalabi ;didn't know because he hadn't  livedthere in a long time)

So in type right wing fashion they doubled down.  The put Chalabi in charge of "De-Baathification" of Iraq (which lead to such disastrous choices as his decision to disband the Iraqi military and police forces)  while his housemate/possible lover  NY Time Reporter Judy Miller effectively took charge of the US military teams hunting for WMDs and sent them wherever he told them to look.

After a while even the PNAC boy started losing patience with Chalabi, so he went and made common cause with the man who was most actively fighting US forces at the time Moqtada Al-sadr.   Not only that but when US forces finally arrived at his villa to arrest him for having a rival politician murdered, the CIA refused to let them into the villa until they had secured some extremely sensitive Crpyto gear they had given him at the beginning of the war.   Which was more than a little embarrassing to them when after the arrest investigators found proof he'd been working for some time as an Iranian double agent and had long since handed that gear over to Iranian intelligence serivces

Remember when those who questioned the validity of intelligence, or the motives for war in Iraq, were labelled traitors and un-American? Remember how those people were angrily told to "support the troops" when they didn't want troops to go into combat?

Sunnis and Shi'ites have been killing one another for hundreds of years. They hate one another, but I'm betting no one really knows why anymore. There are no good options for Americans. We need to stay out of it. We, our European allies, and the Soviets (now just the Russians) made ourselves part of the problem (over and over) for decades and there was never anything to "win" there.

She was living at his compound when she did her reporting, She was infamous for having romantic relationships with her sources (went she went to jail to protect Scooter Libby he wrote her what either a love note or a coded message ("Out west, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work - to life." )
