I like showing articles such as this one to devout bible believing Christians. They really have issues when someone points out that their gods weren't first.

Which isn't to say their gods aren't valid mind you. I make no judgement on their belief or faith. I just take issue with Christians who say that their gods are the one, true and only. It is easily verifiable that the Christian gods are rather late to the scene.

All those dirty heathens that came before Jesus existed are all rotting in hell for being so stupid to be born before he could save them, so Christians really do get the last laugh.

This is up my professional alley, so to speak. A couple of links for those interested:

On the looting going on in Syria, but also relevant to Iraq and Egypt.

On the dangers of investigating sites in Iraq (close to Kurdistan, btw) , but also a cool introduction to the latest on the hanging gardens of Babylon

Not checkmate, stalemate.  Cat gets the game.  I don't get into discussions about religion because even if I convince the other person, all I've done is taken something precious away from them.

8-10.  Check for secret doors in the High Priest's chambers, you'll find a +4 footman's mace.

Actually if one were to take the bible literally as some fundamentalists would have us do,  there WERE lot of other gods a long time ago, it's just that Jehova went all Michael Corleone on them and had them rubbed out.

He "threw himself on the ground, tore his clothes, and his arms hung limp. He ripped off his headband, pulled out his hair, pounded his chest with both hands, and threw himself flat on his face " reads one ancient account

Sounds like a teaparty patriot.

If your god isn't a supreme god, might as well have your priests call it a day because they aren't doing their job. At least these guys understood the power that a supreme god gave them. So many other priesthoods gave competitors an inside track back then.

"Dearest Elizabetha:

This may be my last missive to you, my love, as all of our dreams of glory are now turned to ashes in the night.  It was with such great promise that our hardy band set out from Miskatonic University Department of Antiquities to journey to the sands of Arabian in search of the forbidden Lore.  The research put on the correct path, but we have encountered difficulties at the last.  Our swarthy guides fled from us when our picks revealed the main hallway of the subeterrean temple complex, taking all of our provisions with them.  We have explored deeper in hope of finding water in this barren land but to no avail.   But the discoveries, love! The discoveries!   Such icons and art that were never imagined.   I so wish you could share with me this joy.  But I must go now, the lantern is flickering.  And again, those noises, the noises in the night..."

I always thought this Month Python bit applied really well to a lot of Lovecraft:

BM: "The castle of... Aaaaaaarrrgh"
Bedevere: "What is that?"
BM: "He must have died while carving!"
Lancelot: "Oh, come on!"
BM: "Well that's what it says"
KA: "Look if he was dying he wouldn't bother to carve 'Argh' he'd just say it"
