Collateral damage. Those Brave Lawmakers in TN taking a stand against Obongo's Socialist Job-Killing Abominationtm is bound to cause some pain and sorrow for ordinary people, but it's a sacrifice the GOP is willing to make.

I assumed the headline is sardonic and not meant to be taken on face value. So, when someone replies that the subby is a farking idiot, I'm thinking that they DO think that Obama's zealous quest for power literally destroyed a marriage .

Do you think it's funny that this poor woman had to move into a homeless shelter and that she and her husband of 33 years had to separate and that tens of thousands of people are going to suffer and die because GOP legislators are such immoral assholes that they would willingly burden their fellow citizens and lose money just to spite the President?

I don't think it's funny. And I don't think it's sharp or edgy or "sardonic" to troll with a headline like this.

I don't see why she had to move out.  Once they were divorced, she could have continued living in the same house as a roommate.  You don't combine household income with a roommate for tax purposes.

Tennessee may go after couples for "Medicaid divorce" arguing that it's fraud but I have no idea. I have friends who have stayed married to keep their spouses on their health insurance and they stayed in the same residence as roommates effectively but I don't know anyone who has had to split up in order to get insurance. One of my friends just told me his parents are going through something similar and it's been awful for them.

From everything I can find, "Legal Seperation" requires you to actually be seperated. Divorce doesn't but divorce is a much more expensive to file and if you've been married for many years may have requirements about seperation as well. Sadly its not like other contracts that you can mutually agree to end as easily.

Many states Medicaid qualifications don't care if you're married or not - it's the household income that matters.  Or they may base it on personal assets, because you could always sell your car or home for additional income.   Your income and assets have to be ridiculously low in many cases to qualify.

What I do wonder in her case is why she can't qualify for Medicaid anyway under a disability exemption because of her epilepsy, but I wouldn't be surprised if the state law screws her there too, where once she has it under control and can work again, then she no longer qualifies as disabled, or something like that.

It looks like this isn't a problem Obamacare made worse: under pre-ACA status quo she wouldn't have been Medicaid-eligible either. In some States, childless adults can't get Medicaid no matter how poor they are.

Obamacare isn't *helping* her thanks to John Roberts, though.

Is Obama for it?  If so, then it's acceptable to most Republican donors and voters.  In fact, those people consider would consider it unacceptable for a politician to try to fix this problem if doing so could even possible be seen as agreeing with the black guy in the white house.

In most states, Medicaid is tied to a disability claim--or at least was until states had the expansion option. So if she hadn't filed and gone through all her appeals she wouldn't have qualified. The insurance she qualifies for is a state insurance for poor adults. It's like Medicaid lite. Better than nothing I suppose.

My grandparents had to do this as welk a few years ago for my grandmother to gain her Medicaid from the welfare department. At the time, my grandfather was still working and making $15 an hour doing FRP repairs on boats at a local (well-known) yacht club. Because he was anywhere between 30-40 hours a week, and their income was combined (despite the fact that she had been unable to work for at least 15 years due to lymphedema and raised ammonia levels in her bloos from Hep C) they were considered to be making too much money and there was absolutely no way my papa's income alone would have been able to cover her prescriptions, doctor visits, rent, bills, etc.

After 40+ years of marriage, they decided to split so that she could apply as a single person. They also claimed they were living apart using a separate address thanks to a friend who provided a cover address, but (thankfully) they were able to remain living together...in secret, of course.

That hurt my grandparents so badly to dissolve their marriage and the fact that they were unmarried when my grandma died still haunts my grandfather. I feel so sad and sorry for these folks and I hope very much that this exposure may bring some attention to this growing problem and perhaps lead to a happy resolution for them. Personally, I'm hoping that we'll have universal healthcare in my lifetime but given the current state of politics and shiat-flinging in this country, I'm not holding my breath. As someone who is 9 weeks away from delivering my first baby, I can only enviously read about the benefits of France's healthcare system :/
