I'm pretty sure cheese gets that reaction.  Why would someone intentionally eat congealed spoiled milk?

Googling "Chinese cheese" shows that there are indeed three varieties, nguri, rubing, and rushan.

Never really thought about it till this thread.

It all boils down to whether the government can tax it or not anyway. Study or conservation of a species is not the top reason.

Yeah, they are disgusting, but they look and sound like they should be good. So that doesn't hit the "gross" instinct. In fact, I suspect that if you made one at home using real ingredients your hot pocket would be delicious.

Blue cheese is an acquired taste. Not one I've acquired, either. I can't stand that sort of mold. Ugh. (Other cheese is delicious and I will go to town on it.)

Also, I'm of European descent and I'm not lactose intolerant. People in China, however, aren't generally as good at the whole dairy digestion thing because genetics...

Original paper here: https://peerj.com/preprints/423v1.pdf

As this guy https://peerj.com/preprints/423v1/#feedback John Wares points out this is not how species are defined/discovered/named. This is interesting work with a gene sequencer but without further work we have no idea if these deserve to be called species or sub-species. It's entirely normal for very different DNA to not actually make you a different species.

Part of the problem here is the different meanings for "species" depending on who you ask. It started out being Latin for "this looks like that so they're the same thing." Then it evolved into "this looks like that so I bet they can fark and make babies."

By this point we're throwing in all kinds of factors like DNA and population coherence and population history and what we think population future will look like.

Well, there's plenty of muslims in China, and there's Buddhist sects that would consider onions and garlic abhorrent. And apart from 4 piece meals, most of China will eat anything that doesn't struggle hard enough.
