I remember when W as president how liberals thought he was SOOOOooo bad, that they were actually  nostalgic for Nixon.  I mean, Nixon had his flaws but at least he was a champion of the environment and wanted a better healthcare system.

When republicans think that Obama is SOOooooo bad, they are nostalgic for Clinton or Carter, then I'll believe their feelings are genuine.  But they are incapable of seeing anyone with a D next to their name as anything less than a destroyer of America.  And that is but one difference between those on the left and the right.

They should sell this with an "I'm with stupid" shirt.

No, no, no. It wasn't that they didn't vote for W in his second run. They did only because they knew both side were bad

They miss him so much that Dubya was inexplicably absent during the last 2 RNCs and anytime someone brought up the drunken sailor spending of that administration, the Fark Independents quickly noted that he was not a real conservative, they never liked him anyway, and they're really "more of a Libertarian."

It is astonishing how much he disappeared down the memory hole. To listen to most conservative commentators you'd think the last president was Clinton.

I miss W because he makes the current crop of Republicans look like calm, rational intellectuals.
And everyone seems to forget that on September 10, 2001 his own party was starting to whisper "RINO" for all the social agenda stuff he was working on.

They neglect to mention that they were challenging moment because of his leadership, but yeah. Nostalgia is a powerful, powerful thing.

Which is odd for one major reason - bumper stickers. Can you remember any other presidential election in our lifetimes when either candidate's sticker was still present on vehicles for years after the election? But if you drive around a state fair or NASCAR parking lot, you'll probably still find a handful of W'04 stickers.  As Subby implies... that's great for identifying assholes and avoiding them, so I don't discourage the practice.

These T-Shirts take that self-identification up to eleven.

Strike that, reverse it? He was calm and rational compared to today? Or do I just need more tea (I don't like coffee)?

I always liked seeing W4 bumper stickers from his second campaign.  They were handy in 2008 and 9 so you knew who to blame for the financial meltdown.

Whups, humped that up.
"W looks like a calm, rational intellectual next to the current crop of Republicans."
Mea culpa, I can only clam lack of coffee as a mitigating circumstance.

This became clear while W was pushing the Wall Street bailout in fall of 2008 and McCain wouldn't sign on and his only explanation was a "we need a solution consistent with conservative ideals" platitude.  Yeah the Wall Street bailout sucked in a lot of ways.  But not doing it would have been worse.

Republican strategists need to gloss over W's image so they can implant a feeling of rose-colored nostalgia for when they try to get Jeb to run. Much like how they rebooted Reagan's image by eliminating references to all the tax hikes, arming America's enemies, funding terrorist organizations, and giving amnesty to millions of Illegal immigrants at the same time illegals were flooding border states, and the drug wars were spilling into the streets.

Apparently "Vote for me, I'm the smart one. For real, you guys" won't be enough of a slogan to get Jeb over the top.

Because we had a black man in office, and now there's a possibility that we'll get a white woman in office next - this series of horrors has traumatized folks so much that they look back up on Dubya's Debacle as "the good old days."

Dems lost face with me when they failed to acknowledge that W's second term had a completely different character than the post-9/11 first term.  Of course, the GOP  is a bunch of wankers for only remembering the post-9/11 first term, when W was under the sway of Darth Cheney.

Reading that before coffee and it looked like wet t-shirts at first. I was thinking the GOP had become fond of women.

Every time I start to fall into the "Both sides are bad" trap, I think of W, and just how his sterling example of leadership brought our country through some of the most challenging times in our history.

Then I vote Democrat.

Maybe, but the second term was also when one of the most enduring parts of his legacy was set.

CSB:

I was at a baseball game last week and my friend was telling me how Christiano Ronaldo was named after Ronald Reagan, because Reagan was his father's favorite actor. I answered at least it wasn't because it was his dad's favorite President, to which my friend agreed. At this point the man in the row in front leaned back and said "Ronald Reagan was great. Obama sucks."

I leave it as an exercise to the reader to fill in the demographic information of the man in the row in front.

If he loves Reagan so much, there's a good chance his child or children, in one capacity or another, bought his seat at the ballpark.

This is just the start of the Clinton-like rehab the GOP is going to try to do for Bush before 2016.  I think they want him front and center in two years and the only way to do that is to make sure people know the 'real' Bush.  That is why they have been selling the 'Bush is painting now' stories, it is prep work for when he comes strolling out on stage in 2016 before Jeb accepts the nomination for the GOP.  The GOP leadership is DYING for a Bush-Clinton race in two years, even though they would probably lose and despite Jeb probably not being sold on even wanting the job.

Unfortunately for them, Darth Cheney keeps going on TV and reminding people why they disliked Bush in the first place.
