That wouldn't deter the most dedicated of scrappers. I am sure some would even try to snort the ashes at some point while gathering them.

Fascinating. People from the 1800s. 5 born at sea. Patients walking around naked in the middle of the night. With the bonus that One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest filmed there. We read the book in 11th grade, so I was happy that when the movie came out, it was so well done.

Crazies cremated, kept in copper canisters in a closet?  Creepy.
Any named Cooper?
Could they be converted into clappers?

I would toss out the old dusty crap, smash the canisters to make them easier to transport, and then take them to a scrap yard for big money. Those cans could fetch $5K or so if they weighed 1/2 pound each.

For the first time one of the inert, wasted hands raised itself and pointed to a high shelf on the farther side of the room. There, in a neat row, stood more than a dozen cylinders of a metal I had never seen before-cylinders about a foot high and somewhat less in diameter...."You see there are four different sorts of beings presented in those cylinders up there. Three humans, six fungoid beings who can't navigate space corporeally, two beings from Neptune (God! if you could see the body this type has on its own planet!), and the rest entities from the central caverns of an especially interesting dark star beyond the galaxy."

Some patients spent a lifetime at the hospital for conditions like depression and bipolar disorder that, in modern times, are treated on an outpatient basis.

Worth remembering next time someone starts biatching about pharmaceutical companies.

Sadly, scrappers will still consider this a gold mine and take them. Scrappers are among the scum of the earth.

Yes, but all they want to do is sell you some pill made with who knows what chemicals rather than something natural, like weed... Hell, I'll even accept LSD or Ecstasy for the chemicals, since we already know what the side effects of those are, rather than Paxil, Lorazepam, Risperdal and so on...

No. Each contains the cremated remains of a person who died decades ago. Big difference.

I am a fairly moral person and wouldn't have much of a problem with dumping these ashes in a field and cashing in on the copper.  Then again, I think a dead person is dead and not really something that deserves reverence.

Scrappers pick up things other people can't be bothered disposing of properly, nothing wrong with that. When they steal they cease being scrappers and become thieves. Kind of like how there's no such thing as Date-rape. Once the rape starts, the date is over.

Well natural isn't exactly all ladeeda.  Arsenic and anthrax are natural for instance.  There's only so much marijuana can do as well, it's not a miracle drug that cures cancer and fights TB while also freshening your breath with each huff.

Sad, just sad. Each and every one of them had a story.

2014-07-07 09:45:09 AM
It wasn't just the mentally ill that were sent to places like that.  I have a distant cousin who lived in one because she had a hare lip.  Perfectly normal other than that.  I think later on she was hired on as an aide because there wasn't anywhere else to go.

I met a woman who was sent to one because she was the youngest of ten and a bit of a handful, and her overwhelmed mother couldn't deal. I guess it was better than being left in the woods somewhere, but barely. The stories she told kept me up nights.

Not everyone was disabled or mentally ill when they went into a place like that. But they sure as hell were when they left.

If they left.

Irresponsible parents who did not man up when their kids had a problem.  Let's make little Suzy or Johnny the state's problem.  Incredibly sad, and yes love is conditional.  Bury the ashes, with the containers, "here lies people that we as society did not give a S**t about, we all should be ashamed."  That would be a good communal epitaph.
