There is a story about an elephant that was held in captivity for, I think, 27 years, and then she was released to a wildlife sanctuary, where she got to roam free finally. But that wasn't the best part. When she got to the sanctuary, there was another elephant that she had known from the circus all those years ago. They remembered each other.

Someone posted the youtube link here, and when I watched it, I blubbed all over the place. It's a fairly old video, and I think it came from a PBS show. Those elephants were inseparable until one of them died--from an old infection it got from being kept in chains for years. Almost as touching was the keeper who'd watched him in the circus letting her go. He cried all over the place too.

That is Teddy Roosevelt.

Before you all start cursing Indians and their abuse of animals, remember big game hunting was a huge thing here.
We were all like Ted Nudget killing everything in sight.

That's possibly the gheyest sentence ever written.

He didn't survive on plastic and paper for food. He had to be fed, and in great volumes to stay alive as long as he did.

Neither activity is laudable. It's an ignorant, wasteful display of pride and vanity and arrogance but at least with sport hunting they murder the animal and it's over with.

A person that subjects an animal to continued and ongoing suffering is devoid of any empathy or compassion. They willfully ignore the harm they are perpetuating and I find it utterly depraved and evil.

A sport hunter can almost be forgiven their ignorance. Almost. There is nothing forgivable about making another suffer.

That piece of shiate posted a picture the other day of a small snow leopard he shot. I won't repost it here because it's vile. I thought he had a strict policy of only kill it if you can cook it. So much for that.

I really loathe that soulless rubbish heap.

Hunting =/= animal abuse, if don properly (headshot or something that kills quickly).

I think that elephant would much rather have been shot by a hunter then suffer farking DECADES of mistreatment.

Note that i do not condone hunting like this, especially for elephants and big game predators. It's wasteful and serves no purpose. Hunting an animal you intend to eat and use every part of is another matter, if it's not on an endangered species list or something.

Should have read the article.  He'll live out the rest of his life in a sanctuary with other rescued elephants.

TFA kept describing it as some kind of daring midnight raid. It was 20 wildlife officers and half a dozen cops with full legal permission from the courts to tell the abusive owner to step the F back while they confiscate the elephant. What, the author didn't think we'd pay attention unless it sounded like the plot to a Tony Jaa film?

(That being said, I hope the elephant makes a full recovery and lives a long and happy life, and the slightly-less-civilized part of me hopes that someone beats the owner with a crowbar until he can't feed himself)

Hey, you guys want cerebral, don't read the Daily Mail. Or buzzfeed, or jezebel, or Huffpo, or Cracked, or most of the political links, or .....come to think of it, there might be a good reason why a lot of us don't read the links.
