list fails for including tool, pantera and system of a down.

tool and SOAD are not metal, and Pantera was little more than an "also-ran" with one good album and a hand full of good songs strung across the rest of their catalog.  Dime was a cool guy and a good guitarist but that's it.  Any self respecting metal head that claims Pantera as their all-time favorite is being disingenuous at best and outright lying at worst.

And Death suck.  Always sucked.  Will always suck.  never did anything BUT suck.  Never understood why they are held in high regard.

Metallica
Megadeth
Slayer
Anthrax
Exodus
Testament
Morbid Angel (yes, this is the band Death wishes they were - yes, Death were first, but seriously?  Scream Bloody Gore is unlistenable garbage.)

and then who ever you'd like to round out the top ten, because much past that you get into tons and tons of bands that either sound like the above mentioned or that were just nothing much worth getting excited over.

ArkAngel: Where's Jethro Tull?

Britain?

/Metallica does deserve to be on this particular list, and I'm no fan of much of anything of theirs for some years now.

Master of Puppets is one of, if not THE best metal record ever made.  Of course they are the best American metal band.

I will never understand the appeal of System of a Down. Their vocals sound like a lunatic spouting gibberish, and the guitar sounds like detuned mud.

It's what happens when you try too hard to sound DIFFERENT from everyone else.  Yes, they sound unique, but completely unappealing.

I am a life long metal head.  I listen to some crazy stuff.  SOAD suck.

I can think of a couple bands i's consider over them. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Shadows Fall, Dream Theater, and Queensrychë for starters.

Black Sabbath virtually invented the genre and don't even get a mention. Worldwide, Iron Maiden is easily the most popular metal band working today.

This list was composed by some American know nothing who thinks the world came into being when he did, probably circa 1990, and can be ignored as such.

AIC - overrated nonsense.  Don't get it, never got it, completely generic rock.

Soundgarden - some brilliance on display, but you can make one good album out of random songs across their entire catalog - also known as "1 or 2 good tracks, lots of filler per album".

Shadows Fall - nothing here that wasn't already said by the big 4.

Dream Theater - I get that they have fans, but pretentious bullshiat on the whole

Queensryche - did Operation:Mindcrime, probably the single best concept album ever.  And that is really it.  Rolls back into "1 or 2 good tracks, lots of filler per album".  A true metal fan needs Operation:Mindcrime in their collection, but you aren't missing anything of import by skipping the rest.

yeah, this was about American metal bands.  Of course Sabbath and Maiden are amazing, but firmly Brit.

Are you stupid, blind, illiterate or trolling? The list is AMERICAN bands.

Now as far as I'm concerned the list is fail for omitting Nevermore and Iced Earth. They are superior in every way to shiatknot and SoaD.

Preoccupied. I didn't see that it was only for American bands.

Still, no need to be a prick about it.

System of a Down are great musicians, but their music sucks. They switch tempo every 10 seconds, it seems. As soon as they get in any groove I can rock to, they switch it again. Frustrating and annoying to see such talent wasted on musical masturbation.

It's arguably not metal but I'd put Helmet on there.

As for Pantera, their window might have been small but their stuff holds more appeal than many other bands.

Lamb of God should be a lot higher. I'd also say that Between the Buried and Me should be on the list, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Now that is a damn dirty lie. FF have good, consistent albums -- and their concept albums (e.g. Demanufacture, Obsolete) are just brilliant. In my opinion, Fear Factory is far better and more listenable than, say, Mastodon.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: As for Pantera, their window might have been small but their stuff holds more appeal than many other bands.

Don't get me wrong here.  I don't think they suck, and Vulgar Display is a classic.

It's just that they don't have 5 or 6 great records.  They have one GOOD record and a bunch of decent songs spread across their catalog.  They really were "nothing special".  Or, "perpetual opener for better bands", if you'd like.

Your list includes about three bands that are derivatives of the others.  Metal didn't stop after thrash went down the toilet.

List should really be "Top 10 mainstream bands someone might consider metal that are also American".

2014-07-05 03:06:31 PM
Never liked Anthrax. Joey Belladonna's vocals were too "pretty" for a thrash band, and the songs just don't hold up

Metallica deserves #1 for their first three records

Megadeth is kinda "meh". Mistaken just never had the songwriting chops of Hetfield/Ulrich/Burton.

Pantera has enough great songs to make the list somewhere

SOAD has some really catchy songs. Sure, they're quirky and the formula doesn't always work, but when it does, I love it

2014-07-05 03:07:27 PM
Nickelback should have been #1.

2014-07-05 03:09:41 PM
This list is obviously a parody as they didn't mention GWAR or Type O Negative.

The music is ok, not sure who ever told that guy he could sing though.

I like some Queensryche but i'd not call it a metal any more than Motley Crue and they wouldn't be anywhere near this list.

Even Metallica would qualify as hard rock these days aside from a few harder songs. Same for AIC, Iron Maiden and a lot of the other 80's 'hair metal' kind of bands.

Never was into "heavy metal" as most of it sounds like crashing, screaming and grunting anyway.

80's hair metal, I can get behind because at least some of it was melodic and you could understand the words.

2014-07-05 03:10:32 PM
I'm fine with all of the big 4 of Thrash on the list, despite the fact that Metallica hasn't been metal for almost 2 decades now, and I've always liked Pantera and Slipknot. Yeah yeah flame away, stop liking what I don't like, etc. I'm not so sure SOAD and Tool qualify as metal, but I couldn't really say where they belong, they're both in a kind of musical limbo category. I'm not sure what American metal bands I'd throw on the list that aren't on the list since I mostly listen to hard rock these days and haven't kept up with the metal scene. Maybe some Overkill, or Chimaira.

2014-07-05 03:11:23 PM
Pantera belongs on the list.  They sounded like nobody I'd ever heard before them (as a sheltered 15 year old suburban kid who only had a clock radio and no friends).   When my guitar teacher pulled out the Cowboys tape the kid in the lesson before me brought in I was laughing at it because it was so wild.   However, they really perfected the groove metal genre and I'd say their first three Anselmo-Era albums are all between excellent and very good.

Trendkill wasn't awful but you can feel the decline starting.

The first Down album is better than any Pantera album however.

Solty Dog: This list is obviously a parody as they didn't mention GWAR or Type O Negative.

Don't get me wrong, I like Type O, but I'm not sure I'd qualify them as metal either. Great stuff back in the day for getting goth lite chicks panties wet though. I'm not sure anyone ever took GWAR seriously, although they did have a few songs I liked. They just seemed a bit of a niche band.

One of the better music lists I have seen. If I was going to include Tool as metal (which they sortve are) then they would be the easy #1. By far the most talented band on the list. Nobody else on that list can come close to Tool musically.

Slipknot is probably the only band I would argue about deserving a place on the list. Ive seen them live a few times and they do put on a great show.

I always preferred John Bush's vocals.  Sound of White Noise is a classic.

Can't really pick who'd be my favorite, but here's a few: Shadow Gallery, Vicious Rumors, Suffocation, Twisted Tower Dire, Death, Pharaoh, Control Denied, Immolation, Savatage, Ministry, Watchtower, Nevermore, Solitude Aeternus, Agalloch, Cynic, Ion Vein, Kamelot, Origin, Type O Negative, Deicide, Testament....... the list goes on and on.

They are more personal for me because Type O was the first pit I got injured in, and GWAR is inappropriateness personified. Not making any statement but to offend people's delicate sensibilities.

Not nowadays for Morbid Angel. The new CD is beyond terrible. They haven't had a decent one since 'Domination'. As for Death, curious if you've heard 'Symbolic'. Excellent CD and Control Denied (Schuldiner's last band) are awesome as well.

Metallica sucks and doesn't deserve to be on the list.  Fark those sell outs.  They showed just how metal they weren't when it was revealed how much they suck label d**k.

Pantera remains my favorite.  No problem with any of the others on the list.

See I've always preferred Joey's vocals. I'm not sure what you mean by don't hold up, but IMO Persistence of Time, State of Euphoria, and Among the Living still hold up as decent albums.

Listen to Symbolic, Death's earlier stuff was hit or miss, but that album was incredible. The drumming alone makes it an all-time great.
Testament was great and Exodus had some great songs. Never got into Morbid angel so can't comment on them. Overkill is missing from the list too. Haven't heard anything of theirs post 1995 but they had some great albums, WFO is still one of my favorite albums.
