The sheriff doesn't get to choose which laws to enforce!  Tyrant!

alcohol "may be consumed from open containers in all zoning districts...

This seems to be implying it's possible to consume alcohol from non-open containers.

Have they started selling liquor in capsules form now?

This sounded weird to me, that it would even be an issue. And then I figured out why.

Places where legal
There are a few public places in the United States where open containers are always permitted in the street:
The city of Butte, Montana, prohibits open containers only between 2am and 8am. Drinking openly in the street is allowed throughout the city (and elsewhere in Montana where no local laws exist) during the other 18 hours of the day.
A recent attempt to pass a comprehensive open container prohibition in Butte met with widespread opposition and was dropped. However, Montana state law does prohibit open containers in vehicles on a highway.

Surprised. The sheriff sounds like a rational human being.  A rare bird, indeed, in these times.

I'm more surprised that somebody could find a rational human being in Florida.  I never really understood open container laws.  It seems to me that a few people that couldn't handle their alcohol and became violent ruined it for the rest of us.

I never understood open container laws. I'm homeless. Can't afford to drink in a bar. So you are damn skippy i'm going to drink on the streets. BTW, spare a down on his luck farker a beer or a pint of vodka. (In Manhattan of all places!)

Just another means of harassing the public. You don't need open container laws - or even public intoxication laws. Disorderly conduct covers everything.

One time I gave a co-worker a ride home and his pint of Gin fell out of his coat pocket and onto the floor. Neither of us noticed. As I drove away from his house a cop pulled me over for no reason - well, the reason was that it's a ghetto and pretty much every stranger is suspected of buying drugs in that neighborhood. But he said he pulled me over for failure to use my turn signal. Which was a lie.

So as he's looking at my driver's license and insurance card he sees the bottle on the floor board and orders me out of the car, and then searches it for drugs. I was pissed off and uncooperative and he tried to tack on a bunch of other false charges. When I went to court the judge dismissed all the charges, but I still was out $250 for the tow fee.

Well that's a stupid councilman, the only reason people go down there is to drink, fish, and maybe snorkel.

Wait for the current crop of idiots to die off in a few years, most republicans I know are pot smoking, free drinking, and church only on Easter types.

They have morals just don't feel the need to press then on others.

No, but he can present a report on how much it would cost in overtime. Bet they'd back off at that point.

It seems that homeless alcoholics are the real problem, so just shoot them on sight rather than enact a law that criminalizes them and just makes them move elsewhere to act out..

/problem solved

I was in Ft Walton Beach in the late 90's. Open containers were allowed on the beach there at the time but had to be aluminum, not glass. Good times.
