But every few years, there's a feeling of a rebuild - from the ownership debacle that led to a fire sale in 2008 to Ryan Suter leaving in free agency in 2012 and the Predators' recovery of his loss. Players don't quite see this as a destination yet.

Just because you're rebuilding doesn't mean you can't attract free agents. Maybe you can't attract the top top guys, but a certain class of free agents views a rebuilding environment as a career opportunity, a chance to get a lot of ice time and play with young talent.

Buffalo is rebuilding more than anyone at the moment, and they still managed to sign Gionta, Moulson, and Meszaros as free agents, and get Josh Gorges to waive his NTC to come there.

I heard Nashville is sort of becoming just as "hipster-y" as parts of Austin are now. Is that true?

Edmonton is the most hillbilly city in the NHL. Calgary is a close second. Nobody in their right mind wants to play in Alberta either.

Would have to be since Nashville is considered up town and high falootin' by hillbilly standards.

Although it did work in their advantage not getting Jason "back pass without looking" Spezza.
That guy is a disaster for anyone looking for two way play.  He has more stupid give always then anyone I have ever seen and never seems to skate backwards for defence. It says something when a team resigns a coach when it is obviously a choice between keeping the coach and a star player.

Yep. Canadian hillbillies have different accents, but otherwise they'd  be right at home on that porch with their banjos.

I don't understand why more don't. Buy up 8 blocks for $20? Build gigantic ass walls of concrete around it and have essentially a palace inside? Every athletes dream.

It's the same problem in all sports and in many cities.

If L.A. or New York or Chicago or Montreal are offering me a competitive contract, why on earth would I sign with Nashville or Edmonton or Winnipeg?  The only way I'm going to one of those markets is if they either grossly overpay me, or if I think I can get a boost in my career by getting lots of playing time there.  And once my career is boosted, I'm taking the first flight for the coast.

Nashville is farking Paris France compared to almost anywhere else in the state. Hell, Knoxville is civilized compared to Maryville and the Smokies. They're hill people who eat boiled peanuts, boiled!

2014-07-06 02:42:58 PM
Any franchise that hasn't won the Stanley Cup and isn't in a traditional hockey market is going to be a difficult sell. Also, I think systems focused on high tempo/intensity like Laviolette's can get kind of grueling after a while, but I'm not sure how much this plays a role for NHL players.

jayphat: I don't understand why more don't. Buy up 8 blocks for $20? Build gigantic ass walls of concrete around it and have essentially a palace inside? Every athletes dream.Because it's not just $20. It's$20 for an interest in the property. A lot of times the bank still owns it until it can be paid off. Or there's taxes involved. In order to find all this out you have to deal with the realtor for each property. So that's an added hassle.Believe me. I tried.

Don't forget that if they get sent down to the AHL, they get to wear this abomination on their sweater:

i18.photobucket.com

That's right, a skull w/ a black eye. Nevermind that it's physically impossible, it just screams, "I lost a fight."

FTFA: Nashville has some good, young players - especially on defense -

I'm sorry, but no. With the exceptions of Ryan Suter and Shea Weber, Nashville has a horrible record of young defensemen (At least the ones I see in Milwaukee.) Off the top of my head: Kevin Klein (Really nice guy, but has lots of trouble handling the puck in his own zone.) Cody Franson (Big guy, but he cannot skate backwards, not exactly a good quality in a defenseman.) And the latest loser, Bryan Rodney - why the hell they made him captain is anyone's guess but he really likes turning over the puck in his own zone and he tends to wander off the line on the power play.
Those are the 3 that really stick out from the last 6 or so years, the rest have been mediocre at best.

FTFA:There's no state income tax

Maybe they don't know that. I remember the income tax levied against athletes a few years ago. They only repealed it three months ago, and I just learned that just now when I looked up the law.

Well, the reason Bryan Rodney is captain is that AHL teams don't pick captains who are a good bet to be spending time with the big club.

As for your other contention... Seth Jones? Roman Josi? As an Avs fan, I'll gladly take those "mediocre" defensemen off your hands.

Really? Is that why Greg Zannon (a defenseman that I forgot to list, he's much better than mediocre.) Blake Geoffrion (Who we knew would only be in Milwaukee for a month or so) Ryan Suter, and Shea Weber all wore the C at one time for the Admirals? Because it was "a good bet" they'd never be called up?

As far as Seth Jones, I never saw him skate here in Milwaukee, so I have no opinion. Roman Josi was a -7 here with Pekka Rinne behind him. I'm sure you can understand why I'm not a fan.

FTFY.

I'd much rather be in California (anywhere on the West Coast, really) than anywhere else, even if I had to struggle to get by here.  I lived in red states for over 30 years, and I'm not going back.  Politics aside, everything is prettier out west, and the weather is amazing.
