Farking GOP. It's right there in the Constitution. The FLOTUS decides what goes in school lunches. Look it up.

1. Michelle Obama didn't implement anything.

2. The school lunch program that Michelle Obama is the public face of is not compulsory.

3. The school lunch program is a set of standards that schools can choose to meet in exchange for greater federal subsidies, but the schools are not punished or denied existing subsidies if they choose not to.

4. The GOP is pants on head retarded, so you should assume anything they oppose is good for this country.

Centrally planned lunch is a key tenet of communism. First pizza sauce no longer counts as a vegetable and the next thing you know we're all eating turnips on a collective farm.

How dare kids eat more healthy? How dare schools be encouraged with funding to make these programs more available?

Doesn't she know that we have a surplus of children in this country already? Between importing kids across the borders, and the poors we're drowning in takers who should just die early, and she is flouting the plan to increase the funeral industry, and the medical waste industry. Why does she hate America and her noble and proud morticians and biological waste industry? WHY?

mamariata works at a school campus here in our little burg. The cafeteria on her campus used to be legendary for the lunches they prepared. All from scratch and freaking delicious! The enchilada casseroles, taco salads, and King Ranch casserole days saw an influx of staff from other campuses (and occasional guests of staff) and the kids absolutely loved those meals. And guess what! The kids even ate the veggies and fruits that were included with the meals (the green beans...ermahgherd!).

I say used to be because those meals don't fit the guidelines  and if we want any Federal food dollars, we have to toe the Federal line. Now all the campuses have the same bland crap, most of which is getting thrown away.

Oh well...its for the good of the children I suppose.

You know, if they had the Whie House chef (or really, any decent chef) designing school menus and teaching the staff how to cook, the lunches could be both tastier and healthier.

Approaching school lunches from a position of 'How do we make these healthy, satisfying, and appealing' instead of 'How do we meet minimum standards as cheaply as possible' would be a great start.

I figured she just borrowed her husband's time machine, went to every school in the country (not unlike Santa Claus on Christmas, only on every school day), fired the nice old lunch lady and force-fed kids healthy food as if they were foie gras ducks.  Was I incorrect? Because my theory sounds much more plausible than yours.

Seriously, have they SEEN what school "lunches" look(ed) like? I would never feed a kid the crap they served in the lunch line to me in the '90s. luckily my family had enough money that I could eat out of the alternative line, where there was actual FOOD. most of my district qualified for free or reduced price lunch though, and was stuck with the junk.

Schools have been feeding kids for decades. But now all of a sudden the school is making kids fat?

You sure its the school lunch that only a fraction of kids eat when the country has a 60% obesity rate?

You're all missing the true issue here. The local contractors who provide schools with "nutritious" meals like cheese pizzas, mozarella sticks, and chicken rings all donate big bucks to state-level GOP candidates.  Raising the nutritional standards on those lunches eats into those contractors' profits, and eating into those profits reduces their campaign contributions.

And since campaign contributions are now considered to be free speech, and free speech is protected by the Bill of Rights, the GOP sees this as irrefutable evidence that the FLOTUS is deliberately destroying the constitution.

I had to google king ranch casserole. I'm assuming by taco salad, you don't mean some taco meat served on a bed of fresh lettuce. and enchilada casserole, same.
So here's my question for you- WHAT vegetables? half your plate should be vegetables. Where are they in those meals?

Yeah, because everyone knows kids always make good, healthy food choices all by themselves.

Kids choose what they will eat and what they won't eat.  Saying your going give kids good, healthy lunches sounds good on paper, but if the kids won't eat it, they'll skip their centrally-planned, soviet-style lunch and eat a candy bar.  Local schools should be deciding what to serve kids for lunch, not pencil-pushing bureaucrats in DC.

Someone needs to post the ridiculously awesome yet simple lunches they serve in other countries.  Like, nifty, complete bento boxes in Japan.
