Yesterday's matches included a German side which finally remembered how to defend before the ball got to Neuer, giving them a spot in the semi-finals, while despite the best efforts of Locust Rodriguez, Brazil and FIFA were able to beat Colombia to get the 2nd spot, losing their captain to yellows, and Neymar to Bane. Today we'll see who will take the other two spots in the semi-finals.

First match: Argentina vs Belgium (538 Predictions 70% Argentina)

Let's see how they got here

Argentina came in through the Group of Ease, winning all three of their matches, first against Bosia (2-1), a last second win against Iran (1-0), and a 2-3 victory over Nigeria. While a sweep is impressive, against those teams they really should have done better. They excited the round of 16 against Switzerland, once again securing the win at the last second.

Belgium is also undefeated, and also were in a very easy group, beating Algeria 2-1, Russia 1-0, and South Korea 1-0, only getting their second goal against the USA USA USA 2-1 in extra time.

Algeria's reliance on Messi is strong, while Belgium seems to have a lot of confidence up front which may become problematic. Argentina has the better team overall, but if the Belgians can get their game together and play as one connected machine, Argentina may go home today.

Netherlands vs Costa Rica (538 Prediction: 76% for Netherlands)

Costa Rica has been a joy to watch this entire tournament, and few could have predicted they'd be fighting for a spot in the semi-finals, let's look at how they got here.

Costa Rica was in the (real) Group of Death and came out on top. They began with a shocking 3-1 victory over Uruguay, beat England 2-1, and then finished it up undefeated 1-0 against Italy. They seemed a bit more shaky against the Greek side in the R16, having to take it to penalties were they put 5 past the keeper to stay alive.

The Netherlands have also been undefeated. This started with a fantastic 5-1 victory of reigning champions Spain, a shaky 3-2 victory over Australia, and a 2-0 win over Chile. Controversy in the second match led to many sad Mexican fans as Oranje sailed past the Mexicans in the final minutes of the game to first equalize in the 88th minute by a beautiful strike from Sneijder, before a foul in the box brought down Robben and gave Huntelaar a chance to go ahead -- and secure the victory -- in added time.

Costa Rica has had a great run, but I really don't see it continuing here unless they have 40 aces up their sleeves. They've surprised the hell out of us, but the Netherlands haven't really looked like pushovers for this tournament, and while CR has definitely proved its ability to hang with the big boys, this will by far be their toughest match yet.

Neymar out of World Cup with fractured vertebra

This is what happens when a ref lets the game get out of hand.  Calling lots of fouls gives players incentive to dive, and calling few yellow cards (none in the first half) encourages violent play.  Not that Zuniga was blameless here, but I'm guessing the refs today will be extra vigilant/strict today.

Yeah, I can't wait to see what FIFA says about that official, I can't imagine we'll see him again. He had zero control over that game.

I missed the second half of that match due to having to smoke ribs yesterday.  I'm more surprised to see the knee to the back went unpunished by the ref.  That game was so out of hand in the first half, I thought it would settle down massively in the 2nd.  Looks like I was wrong.

Anyway, I'm hoping for Ticos Surprise to continue, and for the Belgians to actually show up and do something correct in this World Cup.

As an aside, if it was the score after extra time that counted, I would be way better off in the prediction league with a couple of Perfects in place of a couple of Completely Wrongs in the last round.

2014-07-05 11:05:48 AM
As a ref, how do you fairly control the players? I remember the 2010 WC final where the ref gave out like 14 cards yet the match was still a slugfest. And I wouldn't want the ref to hinder one side by red carding a player when both sides are being ridiculous.

Don't feel too bad about that, because I would be too.

The simple solution would be to start handing out the reds.  It would be interesting to see both teams reduced to like 7 men or so.

In private Blater must be punching walls. One of the biggest names and star player for the hosts is out for the rest of the competition and their is nothing in the rules they can do about it. The ref saw it and handed out the punishment for the foul so no retroactive punishment can be handed out. Could this be the watershed that allows after the fact punishment like rugby has witht he citing system (in rugby the ref can "cite" and incident and it will officialy be looked at after the game and punishment handed out).

Plus while it sucks for Naymar I have no sympathy for Brazil as they kicked James Rodregiez out of the game.

Refs are far too afraid to give out reds. Rightly so, of course, since their lives may hang in the balance.

holy shiat!  I thought he was just bullshiatting.  jesus.

yeah, ref evidently left his cards in the locker room.  game was far too physical and the players pushed it to its limits.  fair to say that ref is Coulibalied for the rest of the tourney.

I stopped watching and then things apparently got out of hand that game. Reading the article, I thought there was a reenactment of Bane vs. Batman with the result being the same.

I hate when FIFA does this kind of grandstanding, considering all of the other problems that this organization has.

And apparently, Kompany agrees with me, considering he couldn't get through that with a straight face.

So after yesterday I expect any Belgium player who so much as touches Messi will get a yello card. Can't have both Messi and Naymar out of the competition.
