Millennial here. Does not deny it. I'm holding my two-month old. She appears lazy and self involved. Her generation is useless.

"But this is a serious problem. It's not a vanity issue. It's a mental health one which has an extremely high suicide rate."

At the very least it sounds self-correcting.

It's just taking a picture of yourself holding a camera. That in itself is nothing concerning. Insisting on calling it a 'selfie' however...

ugh. as usual the actual story is 'people with serious personality disorders and deep psychological issues are more prone to troubled behavior.' But no, lets invent 'selfie addiction' as a thing for the local news to breathlessly clutch pearls over

LAUGHTER OL they do the linking to the article where they do the quotations of four clinicians who have done the opinion formation. The one study which has citationing does not make the leap upon which is assumed by the article of this. In the other wordings the only outrage that would come from this should be against those individuals who buy into this crapalaciousnessity. Get the brains moran of you.

I have a three-year-old Verizon-branded Android and it is damned near impossible to take a selfie . I only learned this last month. You want to see my face, go search for my mugshot. Short of that, fuggit.

You don't get mental illness from taking selfies. It might exacerbate some of your self-centered qualities, but it isn't going to put you in a rubber room.
If someone does nothing but take selfies and post pictures of themselves and talk about themselves all day long, why yes, they might have a mental illness.

[reads article] OK, I guess they say that. Yes, if you know what you're looking for, you can spot these people on social media pretty quickly. They're assholes.

I'm 47 and have been know to take a selfie or two. As someone who is and has been woefully un- photogenic all my life, I enjoy being able to make myself look  decent in a picture for once. If that makes me mentally ill, then so be it.

The secret word in that situation is "halfsies". But that is pretty much blaspheme to a beer drinker.

I remember when you had to have your pictures developed and then share them in person. I like seeing pictures of my friends enjoying themselves. The occasional shot that's poorly composed can be scrolled by with pretty much no effort.

I'm 53. Complaining about selfies is a mark of immaturity.

Did they correlate the numbers with usage of duck lips in these selfies?

I bet there is an even higher occurrence of mental illness with people who take selfies while doing duck lips.

Pfft. I don't either. I post incessantly on Fark though. But I don't count Fark because it's not really about ME. And I seem to recall seeing both of you gentlemen around here quite a bit.....
It would seem weird to me to even have a Facebook page where I posted all kinds of personal shiat about myself. Who farking cares? That's what email is for--boring all my friends with the details of my life. And then half the time they don't answer me back anyway. OK, fine, I get it.....I'll go back to Fark.

You're generous - "Jimmy Carter's farmland" would have been a tortured joke back when the Starland Vocal Band was popular. If you couldn't create biting sarcasm 40 years ago, it's hopeless to try it when you've got dentures.

Selfies is an addiction now?

Things I've learned on the internet. I need to keep a running list.

All fads are addictions
Everything went "Viral"
All pictures are selfies and/or photobombs
All firearms are "Assault weapons"
All dogs are Pit bulls
Everyone is an "Artist"

What am I missing?

True.

The only difference between selfies (aside from digital media) is how incredibly stupid the word "selfie" sounds.

Thank you for covering this. What I came here to see.

Excessive selfie-taking is just another, mildly novel symptom of an existing psychological issue.

Came here to ask the same question.

Though, anecdotally, the people I see doing this in my Facebook feed tend to be batshiat crazy and terribly self-centered instead of just terribly self-centered.

Never taken a selfie and don't care.

Actually, there's not even that many photographs of me in my albums. Mainly family and friends. I think there's one or two images on the Internet.

I did note, though, how every time we make a form of technology popular, within a remarkably short time there are 'addicts'. Look what happened with Texting. I've been watching the increasing problem with Drones, and recall the problems that popped up when tiny, cheap, wireless cameras became available that had night vision.

Blogs started out as interesting, until there came so many Blogs that they actually became annoying and good ones just got lost in the crowd.

I'll let the Psychiatrists figure it all out. That ought to keep them happy for about a decade.

I thought millennials were born in the mid mid 90s?

2014-07-05 01:22:56 PM
yes, this fits in with several of my cousins.  The self-absorbed ones take endless selfies, with various backdrops.  One had climbed to the top of one of the 14's(I think they call it that), posed next to a wall of ice, and took a selfie.  Nothing in the background but ice and sky.  When asked why he didn't take a pic of the scenery, or the view, so as to show his perspective, rather than a pic of himself and some ice, he got this blank look on his face, as though confused by why someone wouldn't want to view more pictures of him.

/if I had pictures of myself, I could shop myself into many interesting places

Though having had Total Fark previously, I know exactly what would happen.

Considering online dating and the lack of photos of myself is a bit of a hindrance.
