have you ever noticed that whenever someone refers to their locale as a "community" it's inevitably a hell hole?  nobody in la jolla or the hamptons or buckhead or river oaks ever calls their area "a community."

and if you ever hear an "activist" talking about "the community," it's a certainty it's a real sh*t box part of town.

other than former NBC sitcoms now on Yahoo TV, "community" is code for "avoid like the plague."

I can't see any plausible excuse for that. Cops know how to subdue someone through grappling. There's no need for strikes like that.

Don't assume you know where I have and have not lived. I am not being an armchair lawyer. The cop lost his shiat on the woman. You can see in the video he could have easily subdued her. She was thrashing about on the ground, but he had control at that point in time. If he absolutely needed to punch her, he did so. Once she stopped moving, he continued on punching.

"We are known as an agency that really polices itself," O'Quinn said.

Can I try policing myself?  Don't worry, highway patrol, I'll slow down if I feel like I'm driving unsafely, you don't need to police us here, we're "self policing".

I'm torn. On the one hand, he could have used a taser, or evasive maneuvers until the other cop arrived, which he quickly does in the video. On the other hand, I like to watch cops beat uncooperative people. And that witness guy, he's just a pussy.

I'm sure she had this coming.

All she had to do was make a sammich and keep her mouth shut back in the kitchen. Instead, the poor cop had to repeat himself a few times.

Police should sometimes have to hit people they arrest, yes even women and older "children". That's why we need cameras. Those rare occasions where it's called for? They'll be immediately obvious to anyone watching the whole video.

In order to make the camera policy work, we have to make it assumed guilt on the part of an officer with a faulty camera.

Watched what little video is still available. So what, he lost his shiat on what looks like a typical crack whore. She needed a good beating to make sure she wasn't going to get up and run into traffic as doped up as she was.

FTFA, she was held for a psych eval. Sorry to break the news to you, but sometimes, when someone mentally snaps, the only way to subdue them non-lethally is to knock them farking senseless. Or would you have preferred him to shoot her into
submission? Should he have let her get up and run headfirst into traffic?

California Highway Patrol officers have a heightened sense of the dangers of being on the freeway compared with a citizen

So they get a pass to act like assholes? Why DO patrol officers have a heightened sense of danger?

I've seen a similar explanation.  Most cops don't encounter even adrenaline-generating situations on a day to day basis, but they're always thinking about it so when they do find themselves in one they go all extreme.  I'm not sure what she did, but it was clearly excessive force on the part of the cop.

He had the upper hand by the time he started hitting. He was sitting on or just above her centre of gravity, meaning that no matter how strong she was, she wouldn't have been able to lift him off her. All he had to do was keep her down until help arrived. There was no point in trying to cuff her then if he knew he had back up coming. Her flailing wasn't going to do him any serious damage apart from scratching. He just had to grab onto her arms. And even then, if he still felt the need to punch her, he got the desired result after the third or so punch. He could have stopped there and then tried to cuff her. Instead he kept going. At that point it becomes an assault.

Cops are trained for hand to hand combat. And are expected to be able to show restraint in times of stress. Just like how a boxer or MMA fighter doesn't fly off into a black out rage in the ring. They maintain focus.

His heart might have been in the right place, but his actions weren't.

Or better yet, when they try to be armchair cops.  My guess is, if you put them in a training simulation with them on top of a 150 pound woman they would have their own weapon pulled on them 90% of the time.

The woman had been walking on Interstate 10 west of downtown Los Angeles, endangering herself and people in traffic,

The officer was obviously in traffic. The woman was endangering him. He obviously was in fear for his person and defended himself. He should be commended for showing restraint and not shooting her, which he would have been fully justified in doing, but no. There is no way for a police officer to please Fark.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. It's like they're trying to compensate by calling it that because they know they're the furthest thing from one.
