Lithium-Ion batteries can be pretty volatile... lithium is quite happily reactive to many things. Split a battery pack of Li-Ion cells open (and with a wreck like THAT I fail to see how they couldn't have done that) and something is going to happen.

Dude must have been moving FAST to cause that much carnage. Wow. Looks like a car bomb went off.

If someone maliciously turns off your cell phone at 65mph it isn't going to result in havoc.

it wouldn't shut off instantly.  First it would lose acceleration, inform the driver it was going to come to a stop in 30 seconds, then finally smoothly stop.  Not perfect, but nothing he can do about it.

Oh, and the doors would stay locked until the police arrive.  He's not getting away that easy.

That's a tired old refrain but you'll change your opinion in 3 years when their third generation car comes out. New tech is expensive, besides these "rich" people are paying for the development of the mass market car and the Supercharger network that everyone will benefit from.

Probably because you can do that in GTA V on their replica of a West Hollywood street, but its a roadster in the game.  Coil Voltic, I did something similar on Tuesday in the game.

There's a lot of energy in those battery packs, just like there's a lot of energy in a tank full of gasoline. They're both dangerous to mishandle, but a lot of people are used to the word "battery" meaning a AA cell in their TV remote and not something that stores 16+ kilowatts of energy.

/I have an EV and absolutely love it.

Staffist: Still haven't seen a Tesla advertisement of any kind, either.  Still, may even buy one.

They don't advertise because 1. Extremely happy Model S owners are great salesmen and 2. They can't make enough cars because they don't have enough batteries to go around so why make the wait times worse?

Tesla has a master plan and they're executing it very well so don't worry, the affordable mass market car they are working on right now will be ready for domination once everything falls into place. This stuff takes time and a bit of patience.

I guess the fact that the Tesla Model S is the safest car ever tested means nothing? This isn't a design flaw in the battery or the car, it's some asshat stealing a 420HP/480 foot pound torque, 0-60Mph in 4 seconds car and GTA'ing that farker around a city.

A modern american muscle redux. Not stock. Wasn't expensive, and would not be considered spoildbrat stuff.
The motor work was done by a friend, gratis. He races, professionally. He is also a master motor builder.
Took a while to build it all out, but now she is sure fun to drive. Not so fun to fill up :-(

I haven't looked at them too closely since it's out of my price range, but it seems like a cool car and "more money than sense" could apply to a lot of things.

I'm drinking a beer.  Does that mean I have more money than sense?  After all, I could have just had a glass of water which is practically free and would actually hydrate me instead of the opposite.  Do I have more money than sense?

What about bacon?  It's expensive and loaded with fat.  But it tastes good.  It's not a sensible choice from a nutritional and health or even economic viewpoint.  Do people who eat bacon have more money than sense?

And to add, their security is asswipe-level.LINK

That does suck.  If you cannot turn password access off, I think that might be a deal killer for me.

At least you can't drive it with your 6 digit password, but it doesn't say how this one was stolen.  Quick hack to unlock and a screwdriver to the ignition?  I don't know....supposedly you need a fob, but I'm sure there are ways around that.

My car has a great anti-theft feature.  Nobody wants to steal it.

Your smugness is veneer thin. Your security (and smugness) will be stripped away once you park that thing in public and some miscreant decides you are the target-du-jour.
I do not DO black-hat stuff anymore. EVER.
That does not mean other do not. As evidenced by the article.
