They hit the pause button at the Marne until 1940.

My headline was better

Germany sweeps past France to World Cup Semis. The French did not see this coming

Nice. I went with "France surrenders to Germany. Again."

2014-07-04 05:44:43 PM
France loses again. Imaginot that.

2014-07-04 06:19:54 PM
Odd. Normally, Germany has to go through Belgium first.

2014-07-04 06:26:11 PM
Well, with England, USA and Russia out, there's really no one left to stop the Germans.

They never stopped them before, no matter how valiantly they fought in 1914.

Oh, and subby, the French never surrendered in WWI.

You could make the argument that the proper French government didn't surrender in 1940 either.  There was an armistice and that was basically the Vichy quislings anyway.

Well if it wasn't for the French we would all be speaking...um...English. Never mind.

Neymar is No More.

I totally thought Neymar was play acting. Them they carried him off the field and into the dressing room - thought it was a dramatic substitution.
Fractured vertebrae huh?

Holy shiat. One, he's got to be lucky that it wasn't worse. Two, there goes my bracket on ESPN. I was #1 in the Fark Group, too. :(

Fractured vertebrae huh?

The thing his entire career could be done. Backs are tricky things and spinal fractures are big trouble. On the other hand he is (a) young and (b) will no doubt get outstanding medical care. So I'd be hopeful in his case. But not a nice injury at all.

A friend was asking which to bet on. I pointed out the obvious track record. Although my result guess of 3-1 was off. I thought Germany would do better than they did, failing to pay attention to their follow-through records.

Oh well, looks like it's time to get my German kit out and pretend I was with them all along.

I made this exact same joke to mrs. czetie last night. She looked at me confused and said "I didn't think they had a World Cup in 1940, because of the war."

...she's not much of a history buff, I'm afraid.

syrynxx: Germany did not exist in 1815

Technically, Germany did not exist in 1870 either, which it was why it's called the Franco-Prussian War.

Arguably, German unification was an accidental by-product of Prussia's success in that war, concrete proof of its growing power among the German states. Conversely, one could argue that this was Bismarck's plan all along, and that France was unfortunate collateral damage.

Amusing footnote: After the war of 1870, the French began construction of the cathedral of Sacré-Cœur on Montemartre, believing that their defeat was a sign from God that they had become insufficiently devoted to the Catholic church. The cathedral was completed just in time for the outbreak of World War One.

I'm waiting to make that reference when Nico Rosberg wins at Spa.

But we'd be stuck with "colour" and "harbour" and "armour" and other such bullshiat. So thanks France, for saving us from all those unnecessary U's.

Yes, he Subby have said 1871, when Wilhelm was officially crowned Emperor in Versailles while they were negotiating the armistice. It may have been Prussia and friends at the start of the war, but it was Germany by the end. And prior to the, Prussia dominated the North German Confederation (and the Constitution of the German Empire was essentially the same as the Constitution of the North German Confederation). The primary impact of the war was bringing the south German states (Bavaria, Wurtemburg, and Baden) into Germany.
