Judging by the behavior I've witnessed in dogs on car rides, the car wouldn't make it a quarter miles without the dog deciding "OMG look at that we're going over there!" and driving into someone's yard.

Hey, it's not the guy's fault that his dog's a shiatty driver. My dog sucks at merging, dog can't parallel park, dog rarely remembers to use his blinker. I don't even use him unless I'm really, really hammered.
