Except for that whole Lou Gehrig's disease, sure.

Yesterday's thread was about the Yankees honoring him, which they did a day or two early.  All of MLB will be honoring him today.

I lost my brother to ALS, and let me tell ya, it was the most horrifying slow and painful death to witness.  I can't even imagine what it must have felt like for him.  Like Lou himself, he believed for a long time that he'd get his strength back eventually, but we all knew better.

So I'm getting a kick out of some of these responses.  Don't be afraid to be snarky; it won't offend me.   ;)

I wouldn't go so far as to call him "lucky."

Seriously his parents should have thought of what was going to happen when they named him...

I personally pretty much hate his disease. But he was a good ball player.

Hey, he didn't have to deal with Yankees fans anymore, so I'd say it was at least somewhat lucky.

It was unethical of them to overdub applause onto it. It's history, not a concert film.

Also, of course, subby got one of baseball's best-known quotes wrong.

You know, I should really be able to watch that speech by now without it getting dusty in here.

There was applause.

watermarked, but still easier to watch than subby's video.

The entire speech Lou Gehrig gave at Yankee stadium that sad and memorable day was shown, in its poignant 276-word entirety, on Keith Olbermann's show, with Olbermann reading the parts that have been lost to time and not saved for posterity on film.

It's well worth a watch.  If you don't have 5 minutes to spare, I urge you to somehow find or make five minutes to spare and watch it.
